You play single combat over Tragic Arrogance when your deck has lots of support stuff or is a voltron deck. If it has many equips/artifacts or enchantments you're not sacking them all to your own board wipe along with your opponents. So you play single combat to keep all your other stuff.

I'm so happy that my playgroup is cool with playing stax and hate.
You want to play many colors and the best cards from everyone? Have fun with that greedy manabase and my Back to Basics.
You ramp more than everyone else and have a bunch of lands? Let's destroy them all together.
I feel like commander is more fun this way. Ramping and drawing cards is inherently strong, same with combos or artifact centric gameplans; so everyone just plays solitaire and try to do their stuff, even if it's just play the biggest baddest creatures and turn them sideways more effectively.
Since we all include some broad hate cards, we all run more removal & counters, so we really need to think about sequencing, politics etc.
Edit: basically we're forced to run more interaction, but we're able to play with busted commanders without anyone batting an eye.
Playing Tergrid or Urza might seem fun but it's probably not going to stick on the board long enough to make an impact

Taking out a player is the best form of removal. I'll archenemy the player that runs Gary.
I will always defend KGrip. I've never been sad to pay two extra for Split Second. It doesn't have to stop a combo to make it worth it, being able to destroy something that usually has an activation or trigger without worrying about it happening is gold. It's not even a niche scenario. It stops every-game synergy shenanigans. I'm in Green with KGrip. Two mana ain't no thang.

Every color can do multiple somethings about kenrith's transformation, imprisoned in the moon, or darksteel mutation. They may require you to play cards that you otherwise wouldn't to hedge your bets outside of aura removal, such as sac outlets, nevdisk, sylex, etc. Aside from that, being too dependent on the commander to have your deck do anything is a problem itself; it may just need some work or there aren't yet enough pieces printed to make it work. This is coming from a player in a very budget meta too, not playing basically any auto-include cards.
Speaking of auto-include, sort of expected to see lame standbys like sol ring, dockside extortionist, and cyclonic rift here, but most should know they're rather more boring than hate-fuel.

Krosan Grip is one of those things that's just play group specific. If your group runs a lot of responsive decks that can often bounce, counter or otherwise protect their things from spot removal you will want cards that just go through and/or provide extra benefits that last. In this case the Grip will do that nicely. As an aside though, I run a Belledros deck that uses the Pest Infestation as a substitute for it because it themes and it scales while having the same minimum cost at 3 mana. If it isn't synergy affecting your choices, it's usually your play group.

Divine intervention is probably the only card you can put in your commander deck, (besides maybe one with nothing,) that won’t even give you a +0.01 upgrade to your win percentage, (not counting the card that could’ve taken its place). Even playing a vanilla 1/1 slightly increases your win percentage, and this card is literally incapable of doing that, since the most it will ever do is end the game in a draw.

    Good shit as always guys!
    My takes:
Divine Intervention - Kind of dumb and uninteresting , but if you view it as you losing and them winning, it’s the same as any other non-traditional wincon. The only difference is they WANT to draw. Everyone’s dismay is their victory!
Mono Black Shenanigans - Black is gonna do what black is gonna do. I do agree that the ones you mentioned (cabal coffers/gray merchant) are more simple compared to the true potential that black has versatility wise.
Explosive Vegetables - 100% agree. Terrible card. Nearly endless better alternatives.
Krosan Grip - cool effect, but outclassed by numerous cheaper spells. The only deck that it’s worth playing is something like a cEDH Yeva, Nature’s Herald. First of all, you are playing a more reactive green deck than usual, so you’ll have the extra mana left open on opponent’s turns. Also, green only has so many ways to interact with blue/counterspells, so why not have a spell that shuts down combos without pushback.
Grave Titan - Classic. Never makes the cut, but I’ll always kee the first copy I bought because it’s still a cool card imo.
Humility - making a comeback in cEDH but pretty miserable.
Expropriate - Never understood the hate. I kinda like the fact that it’s a costly spell that sets someone up for a victory, but allows the other 3 players to try and strategize together to limit the impact. It immediately creates an archenemy type scenario that spices things up.
Food chain - One of my favorites but I’ll admit it’s an awkward middle ground card. Too powerful for lower powered metas and not efficient enough for cEDH. The cost is also to steep to use strictly for value. Exiling a creature? No sacrifice trigger, no death trigger, no enters graveyard trigger. No thanks. You’re absolutely right, it’s for combo only.
Times often - no experience with it personallY but just reading the card leads me to believe that it turns a normal game into a “non-game” of randomness. Can be fun once in a while but gets old after the first time.

For me, the most hated card in existence for EDH as a non-blue player is 'Cyclonic Rift' ... there is virtually NOTHING you can do against it, there is NOTHING that any other colour can do against it... I detest this card, and one of the reasons I hate blue...
As an old legacy player I actually quit MTG totally when 'Force of Will' came into existence - at that time counterspell was THE hated spell type if you weren't blue - then they invented a counter that costs ZERO even before you have a turn and have zero board presence - and legacy - four of them in a 60 card deck!!.... so virtually anything blue I hate and why I loved playeing Iona before it was banned... when I have a red EDH deck; Boil is an auto include....
I'm so salty against blue because they have so many unanswerable cards that your strategy becomes just to kill them before they play the cards...

  • @adamgarey1318

I feel like a lot of people hate enchantress in EDH because it’s so often built as prison/stax/control. I considered that when building my Sythis deck and made it so much more fun. My main theme is auras, pick a target (doesn’t have to be sythis) and make it HUGE. I also run tons of token makers for a backup strat of going wide. Throw in a few hate pieces (deck has ZERO artifacts so stony silence is opop) and some interaction and you’ve got one hell of a party going. If all else fails, I have several recursion cards to bring it all back. Give it a try!

Regarding Serra’s Sanctum, I have less issue with that than Coffers and Cradle, but it requires you to build your deck in a certain way. It makes you play enchantments. I use both nature's claim and krosan Grip. And yes, the only reason I still run krosan grip is for the split second, and it's for the case of if I REALLY need to prevent a bunch of triggers from something on the field being put on the stack or if I need to remove something before another spells resolves to keep a combo from happening and losing me the game. I like to save my removal for the last possible second unless it's a serious problem hits the board, and that does open you up to getting hit with something that can counteract a nature's claim. So as someone who runs both of them, I'm basically stating exactly what your saying, that nature's claim is better at 1 mana, it's still an instant, and krosan grip is genuinely a niche spell that is fairly meta dependant on whether or not that split second is relevant.

I ran Food Chain in my first ever Golgari tokens deck because it was way cheaper than Phyrexian Altar at the time (I think it was like 15 dollars vs 30 for altar at the time) and then continued to run it even when I got a phyrexian altar, just for redundancy. The only time it ever combo'd off was with infinite tokens and at that point it was one of any of like... 6 or 7 cards that could win me the game because I had infinite creatures.
tl;dr - Food Chain for me was always just a Phyrexian Altar for token decks

My Sythis plays almost nothing but auras. it's Sythis Voltron, and I either give it protection from creatures or just make it absolutely massive, and give it trample and swing for commander damage. She has literally always one shot players any time she swings. I built it to prove a point, at two mana, it is far too broken to be a legendary creature and should've been non legendary. Same with Sarulf. That deck is brutal.

One thing that’s interesting to hear is that a lot of cards they talk about like explosive vegetation. For where I live in the world some cards are priced very differently, and some of the better options are just harder to come by. Explosive vegetation for example is commonly converted a 1$ and a half. And cards like migration path are always out of stock. Which may explain why they’re used way more often just cause it’s more accessible.

The only other format it sees play in is the occasional legacy deck, where it sees niche play as a card that is *decent* to cheat in, but can occasionally be actually cast via dark ritual/lake of the dead.
From what I've seen, it's actually fine in that (very small) niche, as it ends the game fairly quickly, and defends you while doing so. (While dodging most common removal except Swords)
However new Sheoldred just does it's job better, being way easier to cast, and only being slightly slower to kill.

I run two of these. Skyshroud Claim I expect needs no explanation.
The other is Single Combat. I run it in my Licia, Sanguine Tribune deck. But I also run every "board wipe but I can spare one creature" that I can. Tragic Arrogance is definately stronger. Heck, I'd even keep Phyrexian Purge over Single Combat.
However, the "no creatures" clause I think is easy to under-value. In my case Licia is very vulnerable to go-wide strategies. So being able to swing at a player twice before they can play more creatures is a very relevant upside when chump blockers are often a big issue for me.
Of course the CORRECT answer is "Run some damn evasion you moron. Youre playing voltron for damnation's sake." But all the jank I run in it keeps it more fair for lower power games when my group pulls out their weaker decks.
