I felt genuinely disturbed at multiple points in the game, and Senua was such a good character. I never expected to feel so deeply about the story going into it. This is absolutely worth playing for anyone who hasn’t yet. Make sure to wear headphones.

I am schizoaffective (combination of schizophrenia and depression), and this game was one of the most accurate depictions of my symptoms I've ever seen. It's a masterpiece made to generate empathy and I think it did an amazing job. I know this video is old and you might not see this comment, but this game means a lot to me and I'm glad more people are talking about it. I've never been able to finish it (it's triggering af), but I played enough to know how important it is.

1:00 Helheim is -NOT- the norse equivalent to Hell nor a bad afterlife. Its generally considered a good place to spend one's afterlife in. Its just not a warrior's paradise like Valhalla and Folkvangr.

In my opinion this game depicts a difficult process of growing adult by walking a thin line between sanity and insanity. Senua's a young woman, afraid, not self-confident and has lost her first love and is out on the journey to her own hell. Her father is the monster, the source of many past evil, telling her constantly how inept she is. Her mother is the voice that guides her through the journey.
One can argue about many puzzles. Most of them are not imporant. Senua's character deveoplment throughout the story, however, is.
Thinking about it now once more, I wonder what happens if the game beats the player. I would find it consequent if Senua fully descended into mental illness.

Yeah... the reality is that if you suffer psychosis and you "fight" your hallucinations and delusions. You're gonna come to your senses in prison for assaulting or murdering an innocent person, instead of having overcome your trauma's and blahblah.

(spoilers)I personally did not interpret the story in a way that says that senua benefited from fighting her "demons" that manifested as enemies in the gameplay. The ending pretty much suggested the opposite.in the the final battle of the game instead of a boss fight with hella you give up fighting and it is implied in a visual way that hella was senua fighting herself, what ultimately led senua to a better position mentally was coming to terms with Dillon's death. Now I also don't think the game is saying that senua should have known to give up fighting from the start, she cannot be blamed for her delusions. What is to blame is her community who shunned her and heavily exacerbated her situation by putting delusions of a curse ect in her head. This pretty much was the reason that senua blamed herself for Dillion's death and went on the journey she is on the game. Pretty much I think the game is promoting awareness and understanding towards mental illness via letting the player experience a sliver of it. This is just my opinion though as someone who is neurotypical and considering that senua is seemingly back where she started in the sequel you have a point.

Great game. Also, people gate keeping mental illness or using it as an asset in conversation (yes, this actually happens) are idiots. Everyone has a unique experience, don't expect someone else's problems to be exactly like yours.

The gameplay is pretty decent. Got some good puzzles, nothing too hard. The fighting is very cinematic, can get repetitive but the game doesn't have you fighting every 3min so you hardly notice it. The game is very story and character focused so the exploration is tailored to the story.

As someone with a history of mental illness, taking this game as an attempt at depicting the experience of living with such issues doesn't exactly leave it looking all that pretty. To me, this is yet another in the endless lineup of dramatized nonsense in the exact same vein as Hollywood's output that half-heartedly dealt with such topics in the early 00s.
That said, if this game impressed on you a sense of empathy towards the hardships of people with mental health issues, then that's a valid and frankly wonderful result and I would never dream of arguing with it.
In general terms though I'd say that if the goal is to make something that personal - that unrelatable - relatable then using an overblown action RPG framework might not be the ideal venue. To give an example of a game that (in my mind) did a far better job of conveying the reality of such states: Actual Sunlight.
Where this game focuses on fanciful schizoprenia, that one deals with garden variety suicidal depression and does so far more unflinchingly and honestly. Fair warning though - I can see that game coming across as quite bleak and uncomfortable to many people.
Oh and for the record, as a cinematic action game I actually think Hellblade is pretty decent - I just do not like the disingenuous pretext under which it is being sold.

    • @PasteurizedLettuce

I think it’s incredibly narrow to think that a depiction of mental illness need be within a gritty modern or realistic context. The subject in question is a character, people relate all the time to characters in contrived and unrealistic scenarios- it’s like an entire form of media and storytelling to create elaborate surreal and fantastical words to interrogate things like suffering. No one is coming out of this thinking that all schizophrenic people are going to be magical special fighters and I don’t believe you have a convincing argument to the contrary. That’s not how people develop empathy for characters, have you been on the internet?

    • @PasteurizedLettuce
      @PasteurizedLettuce Год назад

Also there is no lack of media depicting depression? It is in fact one of the most common characterizing features in entire genres, entire bodies of work. And the characters schizophrenia isn’t ‘fanciful’ at all. Have you played this game?

    • @HansAlRachid

@@PasteurizedLettuce Word of advice: If you actually want to start a discussion regarding the merits of _any_ piece of media with someone it's generally bad form to predicate said discussion upon the claim that your opposite doesn't know what they're talking about or by talking down to them like they clearly have no idea what they're on about to begin with like with your cute little passive-aggressive "questions" there.
Making unsubstantiated claims and starting off by calling someone narrow-minded might also not be the best intro in the world, just so you know.
Have fun insulting people and then acting indignant when you don't get respect and praise in response. I'm out though.

  • @beCoCOi

People are too sensitive. No one complains about Batman's severe depression now do they? The Joker is funny and iconic for being psychotic. Daredevil is praised for overcoming depression and blindness. Wonder Woman's fear of marriages is never talked about. Bruce Banner's self loathing is ignored because the Hulk is fun to watch. Catwoman's kleptomaniac thrill seeking crime spree gives her girl power. The critics are all hypocrites.

Difference is the outcome. As I have responded in previous comments, the outcome of a psychotic episode can be severe. An otherwise friendly person could commit murder or seriously injure other people if encouraged to "fight" their delusions.
