I love the songs on the Electric Cafe album, I've listened to that album on Spotify a lot. I particularly like The Telephone Call, Techno Pop and Sex Object.

Electric Café is so underrated don't even get me started!!! It wasn't exactly what the people at the time considered revolutionary but it is a solid great album that I listen to all the time.

Many young people today have no idea how much influence he and Kraftwerk had, and the limitations they were faced and overcame, and the ground they broke. They literally changed music, changed the world. There's no one like them today. Not even close, even though music is considerably easier to produce for the common musician.
Fascinating, lovely listening to Karl. I'd never understood their loss of momentum in the 80s until now.
It takes pure geniuses to create the music that Kraftwerk did in the 1970's and Karl Bartos was one of these pioneers.A true legend!
I like Electric Cafe.
I like it as well, but in the 80s it sadly wasn't commercially successful.
I hated it. Being a huge fan since Autobahn I hungered for a new album. But I loved Kraftwerk for their catchy nursery-rhyme-like melodies, their distinctly romantic imagery and their consistent bold album concepts, all of which Electric Cafe lacked completely. The best about it was the cover graphics.

He makes a very good point about there being too many options. After about a year of fucking around with VSTs I said "Fuck it, im buying all analogue shit, and learning how to use real instruments." Because I think that is more fun/challenging, to limit yourself.

Disagree. We are limited by those things we build around us. Limitations can be an advantage. It can be easier to have fewer choices, but it is not inherently better. Programs can never be a substitute for talent. Neither can they be a deterrent to talent. VSTs can be as freeing as they can be overwhelming. There are tons of people displaying their talent using VSTs. A "real instrument" is a choice. Take two spoons. A real instrument. Take audio samples. A real instrument. Many things are real instruments. What will you do with the instrument to make it real? What you do with the instrument is what makes it an instrument. It is an instrument, a vehicle for the talent you write about.
I am probably a couple decades older than you, and got started in the analog days when very young, before moving to digital when it came along in the 80's then to the VST trap you mention.
I firmly believe in the old saying it's the carpenter, not the tools. But it's hard to explain to people the organic interaction one has with a real hardware synthesizer once you are good at it, and understand it. Especially one with many knobs, sliders. Such an instrument, or set-up compels you to create your own sound. That freedom, from whatever that limitations is, overcomes any VST, no matter how powerful, and the painstaking task of clicking and dragging a mouse while squinting at a monitor for hours on end, which often turns into just sifting through pre-programmed library patches that are someone else's sound.
As Dave Smith has stated, hardware has a sense of eternal timelessness, while computers, apps and VST plugins are almost continually changing and updating.
I was just thinking about why they stand out to me, and I came to the conclusion that it's their use of melody foremost. Their pieces often revolve around one or two melodies which give the listener a grasp for the duration of each work.They reinforce that idea of familiarity (recurrence, perhaps) in other forms such percussion, voice, lyrics, etc. which they've integrated with their melodies. The compositions are therefore quite satisfying

"Kraftwerk missed the 80's"... mein gott, he's right! After the Computer World tour in 1981, they only managed to release one single and one album for the rest of the decade. If only they had released the original analog "Technopop" in 1983 like they were supposed to, they could have moved on to a new project. I hope the full 1983/84 version gets leaked someday; the demos are superior to "Electric Cafe".
Bull. They had more singles than that; Tour De France, Showroom Dummies (reissue), Computervelt, and Telephone Call.
And Computer Welt was and it still is one my favorite albums, I believe it revolutionized the way music was produced and played... and don't forget that Tour de France also helped hiphop pseudo musicians to give them a base for their so called music... Thanks for sharing!

Perfect explanation of everything that happened in the 80s with the band, a long time ago I already read about the intransigent Ralf, I think he was overshadowed by Karl, from there the problem, they never let him contribute his great talent and with respect to " failure" of Electric Cafe, it refers to the fact that at the time it no longer had an impact like the previous ones, red and green, in the mid-80s everyone was already using synthesizers so in terms of sales and novelty it was indeed a failure, obviously with el tiempo becomes another cult album and more so because it is the last of the original line-up, because of the affection that this represents, it is a pity that Ralf's "egoism" wins against the talent of Karl and Wolfgang.

He was right. As a person who was buying their music, the distance between Computerworld and Electric Cafe was a dark chasm that they could never have got back. As with hindsight, we can see where they could have gone, but they didn't touch the sides. Hey...

I think it suffered from a lot of problems, but reading up on the original vision for the album, with side one being one song, like the version of Music Non Stop they play today, with Telephone line, Sex Object, and Tour De France, then it would have been better.
I really liked it, but it did seem as if they were trying to push too hard for commercial success. I can't help but think that some of the choices made weren't entirely their own, but rather Warner Bros.' input.
Maybe Ralf and the original three guys could do a reunion tour...

With Electric Cafe it gave the feeling that time had finally caught up to them, everybody had copied them and they didn't know where to turn next as Karl explains the story.
After his mention of how someone from the Anglo audience posted a swastika during their performance i can't blame him a bit for speaking in an American Accent.
Interestingly Wolfgang Flur said that Karl told him that Kraftwerk acquired a Synclavier in the early 80s and basically wasted tons of time trying to learn the thing inside out which was a big contributor to the unproductive 80s for the band.

i like kraftwerk as much as anyone but actually being a member of kraftwerk has got to be frustrating and boring as fuck. And here we are! almost 25 years later, still no new album, still no information about it at all. Doing the exact same live show they've been doing for almost 30 years with absolutely no changes besides it being "3D". There will never be a new kraftwerk album and honestly at this point I dont even give a shit anymore.
Fanboys say - "Ooohh I got to see Kraftwerk at Tate Modern, they're the kings of electronic music, they're so retro." Yeah, like upcycled furniture.
Kraftwerk have done NOTHING for years, apart from put on a high end karaoke performance.
I'd love to hear the original Techno Pop recordings before Ralf completely remade it from scratch

i agree with him at 4:00 also. as an artist myself (i draw but don't sing so everyone job is safe...lol) some of the points i feel i can apply to being artist also. I still use the standard mediums (pencils, ink, colored pencils). with technology i will persue computer drawing and other things to enhance my art work. :)

They did what they thought was necessary at that time. Hutter and Schneider were well ahead of their time. I have no doubt that they had a good rationale for their choices.

I'm disgusted that they treated Kraftwerk this way purely because they're German,especially as the whole point of their genre of music was to get away from the music of the generation that embraced the politics NME slurred them with. I love the album “electric cafe”, the only difference on the rereleased “techno pop” is the song house phone which is only good the first half, the rest of the song is not that good.

Kerrygrl 54 The NME article literally used the phrase, "Final Solution", with a giant swastika in the background. Many people were still angry about World War 2, and decided to take it out on Kraftwerk. Kraftwerk's members were born after the war, and formed out of the student uprisings and art collective protests in Europe. The band wanted to make it okay to be German again, and unite the world and its people through Electronic music.
I know, Josh. It is awful that they treated these guys like that. Kraftwerk are great and did a lot to bring techno to the world. I'm glad they were never treated so badly here in the U.S. It just sounded weird to hear him say those words, even though I know the context.

NME were collectively scum at that time. For your information, they accused Rush of having similar political beliefs and slurred them too. Their lead singer, Geddy Lee, is alive today by a slim chance. Both of his parents were imprisoned in, and eventually met, in a Nazi human extermination camp. NME and anyone associated with them should beg for forgiveness for that piece of scummy journalism alone. Unforgiveable and deeply nasty.

Tbh electric cafe is my least favourite kraftwerk album. I think they made a mistake pulling techno pop in 83 if the two demo songs are anything to go by, it sounds like it was gonna be another winner.e c is just too digital and the samples from real instruments just sounded boring compared to the lush synths.also, ironically given the reasoning at the time its the only album that hasn't really stood the test of time.it would be great to hear the full original mix of the techno pop album which it seems did exist from this interview .
Agreed! I have a hunch that the original "Techno Pop" album would have actually dated a lot less..."Electric Cafe" is not my favourite Kraftwerk album...I would love to think that the original concept might be released at some point. Come on Ralf!!

I'd like to know more about exactly why the band decided that the original version of Technopop, which was ready in 1984, wasn't good enough to release at that time. There must be a reason, even if it "sounded great". It's always been a big mystery.
Andy JS here on youtube you can find the early versions of Technopop and Sex Object, which sound like a step backwards after the refined minimalism of Computer World. In Ralf's point of view, the album wasn't groundbreaking as previous works: other bands had appeared and were exploring other paths of electronic music surpassing Kraftwerk's mannerism at the time. I think It is the reason why Karl could find a greater role in making Electric Café the before: he still had fresh ideas, and in fact "Telephone Call" was their only n°1 in dance charts and it's Karl's. If you listen to the 3D Catalog version of Telephone Call, Ralf gas cut away all lyrics because ne simply hates the song non being his. Further works by Karl, like "TV" in Elektrik Music, demonstrate what Technopop could have been. Electric café suffers from this dicotomy between Ralf's growing self-mannerism and Karl's joyful offspring.
I think the main problem was that by 1978-1981 Kraftwerk were like the forerunners in electronic music, but by 82-83-84 many many and more and more competitors appeared on the surface, like all the british new Wave Bands, or in Pop music people like Harold Faltermeyer, Giorgio Moroder, Yello, Herbie Hancock or especially also in the upcoming Breakdance music from USA, check Grandmaster Flash "the Message". Kraftwerk with their self-image of being the Avantgarde Masterminds, were under immense pressure to deliver a very very strong album which they didnt seem to cope with. Had no #1 single material , and with their Pocket Computer sounds of Computerwelt were always in danger to sound outdated. Add perfectionism.

According to a source within Kraftwerk in 1983...
Ralf and Florian is where ready to release Technopop. It had its own release number.
According to this source...the main reason was that Ralf heard the beat to Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. He immediately realised that Technopop album and it's drum sounds were outclassed and out dated. This was the start of the doubts that hey had.
@@klingklangwerk3319 Thanks, that's interesting. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that they heard Blue Monday by New Order in early 1983 and were amazed at the sounds on the song, especially the synth-bass sound, and wanted to know how New Order had created it.
@@arnonuhm7193 There was a big change in music around early 1983 with tracks like Blue Monday by New Order and Everything Counts by Depeche Mode. Songs like those suddenly made everything from even a couple of years earlier seem outdated.

You can really tell what Electric Cafe could have been by the Technopop demo. What a shame they pulled out that beautiful little melody in it. Still, it was hip-hop time. Maybe they didn't want to feel out of step.

Like most post modern art, three quarters of the art needs its over-intellectualisations explaining off to one side away from the piece, and so lacks the immediacy of true art. Kraftwerk were not the influence they pretend to be.
