Years ago, my late father told me that genuine self respect was wholesome and necessary for mental and physical health. My father and I had seen in the news some people who were declaring that they were beautiful and had photos featuring really good-looking members of their kind. One of the photos was of a man who was so handsome he could qualify as an actor. Another photo showed a woman so pretty that she could win a beauty contest. My father noted that while the people in the photos were really attractive, the people who were promoting these photos were overdoing it. I asked my father how were they overdoing it. It seemed to me that these folks had some real self-respect. My father pointed out that real self respect didn't need to be publicly broadcast. He said that what these people were doing with the photos was not self respect, but self admiration. There was an enormous difference between the two, he stressed.

Raising someone’s “self-esteem” without improving them is folly, because now they might be delusional, but “confidence” is a real thing and “self-esteem” just means “overall self-confidence” or “worthiness”, and so it does exist, but it’s context dependent.
I have good confidence about my ability to fix plumbing, but not about my ability to cook fancy food.
Am I “worthy” of good plumbing and fancy food, maybe not, I don’t know. I’m not perfect so maybe I don’t “deserve” fancy food, but I’m sure grateful when my wife cooks for me.

Being humble means being true to oneself, and serving God with all you got.

The gist of what he is saying, is there’s a lump sum of traits and variables that contribute to the phenomenon of “self-esteem” as we experience and perceive it.
But self-esteem itself isn’t something that actually exists inside of us - it’s a word we use to convey the meaning of that experience we all share.
Except we don’t all experience self-esteem issues the same way, because self-esteem isn’t this objective, universal thing that exists the same way inside of everyone.
It differs depending on the individual’s relationship with some of the traits that give rise to the experience of self-esteem.
For example, here he talks about neuroticism, and how fundamentally that makes women more prone to low self esteem than men - and that’s because women experience and understand the world through emotions more than men do. It doesn’t make them lesser in any sense for that being the state of affairs, it’s not like you or I make the choice to incite an emotion or thought in ourselves. The thought or feeling arises, and then we respond to it.
Women have to deal with more emotional inflow than men do on average. It gives them a different battle to fight in the realm of something like self-esteem, where women will naturally be given more emotions to handle on a day-to-day basis than a man will.
But with something like self-esteem, if you never look past the fact that it’s a word that we invented to explain the experience, and isn’t how the experience itself actually exists in reality, then a lot of the nuance that contributes to low self esteem will be lost on you.
For example, low self esteem could be considered a poor management of one’s emotions - whenever I start to feel an emotion that would lower the self-esteem I hold myself in, I acknowledge, and then I do something that immediately combats that emotion. If I start to feel worthless, I help a friend by asking them how their day is, or doing chores and errands that have been on the to do list. If I feel angry, I avoid distractions and sit with the anger to assess if I’m angry because it’s justifiably the best response to a situation, or if I’m being sensitive and indignant.
This approach to emotions that could contribute to self-esteem issues if I didn’t address them embodies a couple different attitudes and qualities - the humility to criticize my own emotions without feeling attacked at the same time - the discipline to consistently address them when it often can feel like unfair work you didn’t ask for - the tolerance to psychological pain that comes from addressing these emotions head on instead of numbing my brain with iPhone brain rot - the perspective that comes from having made this choice a few times already and seeing how much better I feel when I do the dirty work to clean up my mind in those moments of negative emotions.
I don’t bring that up to brag on myself - there’s plenty of shit I mess up still, trust me on that. I’m just illustrating how much nuance and depth lies underneath what we put a label on. If you treat these labels as if they are something which actually exists, well then you’ll replace what actually exists with the label.
And that’s the really damning part, because that means you stop looking for a better way to understand it.

He's talking rubbish, self esteem is about how you value yourself. By saying that this doesn’t exist he is saying either that people do not value themselves more than others or it is not possible to improve your aelf worth or have your self worth be crushed by others.
I think that we know that by lying, treating ourselves and others badly, eating poorly and not exercising then the respect/value for ourselves can diminish. When we try to work on ourselves such as self education, excercise, acting morrally to others, eating better then we can build a self esteem.
Building a self esteem is what he is doing when he reaches out to incels and gives them speeches about 'tidying your room'.
It's obvious that Jordon peterson is trying to get devout unquestioning followers by announcing other ideas as false whilst his ideas are true even if he contradicts himself. His behavior seems highly narcissistic and he doesn't seem to have truth as a guiding principle.

I don’t understand what he means when he says self-esteem “doesn’t exist”. He just defined it. Trait neuroticism - extroversion = self-esteem. I can define it too. It’s the feeling of having done good things separated from the good things that you’ve done. It’s certainly possible to have earned high self-esteem by doing good things, but even if you haven’t earned that feeling, you can still feel that way as long as you delude yourself. It’s certainly not a good thing to pursue or to measure success off of, but it most certainly exists.

By saying it « doesn’t exist », He’s saying it’s not an object. A zebra is an object. The zebra next to it is another object. Yet sure, You could create a concept that refers to the front end of the first zebra plus the back end of the second one. And using that concept, You’d still englobe most of the zebras of the herd. Yet it would be the wrong way of conceptualising them.

“All actions result from the play of the three forces; only he who is blinded by egoism thinks, ‘I am the doer." This is one of the key ideas of the Eastern gnostics. Human beings, like all sentient beings, are bound by action. As long as they are part of the creatura they can no more escape from action than they can stop breathing and eating and still remain alive. But certain rare humans, endowed with the gnosis cardias, could see through the veil of maya and learn to separate themselves from their activities. All gnostics do not feel at ease in the creatura."

This is wrong. Neuroticism is the sensitivity towards negative emotions. People that are highly neurotic can peecieve very subtle negativity in a multidimensional space.
Self esteem is the evaluation of oneself.
Extroversion is the expression of the individual. You can have a neurotic individual that expresses that or not.
Neuroticism minus Extroversion equals an neuroticly introverted individual that makes it difficult to be helped which can result in low self esteem but that does not make self esteem non existent.
Its like saying 2 does not exist because it can be expressed as 1+1
Substracting extroversion from neuroticism does not leave you with self esteem. This is an embaricing equation from many perspectives.
This one is a loser, moving one...

Just know that you (self not actions) are ok; embrace that and figure out how to stop seeking more of whatever makes you feel better--you'll always need more. Deal with the source.

    (Romans 12 1-3 KJV 📖♥️)
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that may prove what is that is good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

This is a very odd statement. Self esteem is conceptually clear in therapeutic settings even if it is difficult to measure. Peterson often invokes difficult to measure concepts as though they are certain realities but chooses to claim the opposite here. I'm curious as to whether he has a motivation to do this he may not be aware of.

    • @person1858
      @person1858 Месяц назад

You've perfectly articulated what I couldn't. Thank you. As for his motivation, my guess is he's a traditional conservative. He loves the big 5 since it shows men and women to be different from each other. I dunno why he would dislike the idea of self esteem though. Its a very silly statement to deny it's existence.

There is no such thing as “apples” there is only Malus pumila because I have the big scientific name for what actually exists, so people are going around eating something that doesn’t actually exist. As a poet I have always said I have no self-esteem. Does trait neuroticism also mean I don’t have any self-loathing? Interesting point you make Dr. Peterson about people going around believing in things that don’t exist perverting all of society.... like “capital” I wonder??? Signifier vs signified? Who gets to determine language? The common use of the people in their day to day communications or academic elites who determine correct usage? Is not the “self” an imaginary construct of the mind?
Is not “the self” a residual totemic identification going back to the beginnings of totemic behaviours and the invention of out first metaphor that sparked the rapid development of language... “i Wolf” living as a totemic metaphor when we adopted the social structure of a cross-species pack of apes and wolves leaving behind the loose troop social structure for the tightly nit hunting pack? The big bang shift that made us human. Living as a totemic metaphor. Metonym can communicate simple direct information. Metaphor is necessary for complex language. Forty thousand years later how would that first metaphor unconsciously display its self in the stories this species tells about its self; like fragments spreading out from a big bang moment of creation?
