For Sheldon, knowing about American Football has nothing to do with being Texan, his father was the coach of the high school team. He also had Sheldon sit with him and watch the game after school. He knew that Sheldon would do his homework regardless of the situation so he used that time as a bonding opportunity.

@@christianboehlefeld5168 what state you are from is irrelevant when it comes to your interests. Sheldon still has no interest in American Football, but, like I said, since his father was the coach of the high school team, he learned the ins and outs of the game. He still has absolutely no interest in the game whatsoever, but he can never forget what he learned because of his eidetic memory. That said, he can come up with viable strategies during the game. Honestly, Sheldon could actually make a hefty fortune by consulting coaches about plays and making wagers.

@@marckempe2143 At 0:49 when asked a direct question, "How do you know this stuff?" Sheldon's response is that he grew up in Texas. He goes on to describe the ubiquity of Football in the state. Yes he never had interest in it himself, constant exposure to it and people familiar with the terminology and rules meant he absorbed the information. What state you are from is definitely relevant to the interests and culture of the people around you and that you are exposed to.
And again, nowhere in this scene is it mentioned that his father was a football coach, just that he taught Sheldon about it and tried to create in Sheldon an interest in the game; presumably so they might have a common interest as a means of deepening their relationship.

When a CIA consultant spotted soccer fields along the coast in Cuba in September 1962, he became concerned because, as he put it, “Cubans play baseball, Russians play soccer.” The CIA analyst had deduced that the field indicated the presence of a Soviet military camp nearby. JFK wanted hard evidence. Photographs of the soccer fields convinced Kennedy that the Russians were putting missiles in Cuba. So, yes, Texas remembers.

So true! I remember I had quantum chemistry in the first year of college. And unlike my peers I felt so lost I couldn't even understand the reference book that the professor was using for the course. "Quantum Mechanics for Dummies" really helped me get the basics I needed and make it sense for me.

That's why every english speaking country has it's own football. Canada-Austrailia-New Zealand-USA-Ireland all have their own versions of football, because the game/history of the sport is older than soccer.

To be fair, if Sheldon's father took the angle of how physics, math, clock management, roster composition, salary cap, drafting, and all that factored into the game, he would have loved it!! Football can be as nerdy as you want it to be
Also here's my headcanon on who he would root for: considering he's from Galveston, the Houston Oilers were the closest team during his childhood, so his father was probably an Oilers fan, now the Tennesse Titans, so if Sheldon did like football, I think he probably would have rooted for the Titans
