Great job , putting a great classic back renewed. I did my IMT 539 15 years ago put everything new in the Perkins 3 cly. Diesel engine . 2600 hrs later still running great. The paint has faded a bit .

I cut silage with 42’ JF behind a 65 and that was tough going, TVO 20 drawing and another on the pit. I was 15 back then. Where abouts are you based? I’m in Meath.
@@patwatters8205 TVO 20 - that's what my dad had when I was growing up and what I learned to drive on. IX 1925. It's still around, my brother spotted it a few years back outside a house over near Abbeyshrule. I'm in Longford.
@@mijicmugendo I'd be guessing but probably 600-800 hours. If I had a decent way of cleaning the gunge off the parts (like a vapour degreaser/blaster) I could easily have knocked 100-200 hours of that. I also lost a lot of time on the painting as it was my first time to paint with a spray gun so there were a few unsuccessful attempts, rubbing down and start again. If I was doing another one it would probably take half the time as I was learning as I went along (and enjoying the journey along the way).
@@tmck8133 You did a marvellous job and jmo , but 6-800 hours doesn't seem to bad for what you ended up with. It nearly looks to good to go out in a field 😁
The scratches in the engine can be virtually eliminated thru the use of shell rotella oil. It has a lot zinc in it which was used as an anti scuff agent. Gas engine oils don’t use it as it kills cat converters. I prefer the T4 as soot loading negates the need for synthetics.
Great video and great job im in the middle of restoring a fordson super major hopefully getting its first coat of primer tomorrow how did you remove the track end rods as mine need replacing but I can't manage to get them out thanks
Hi Shane. Thanks for the positive comment. I tried loads of WD40 but that didn't work. In the end I heated them around the thread area with a small gas torch just to loosen the rust and got them out with the track rod in vice and stencil wrench on track rod end. Remember one end has a reverse thread!! After I got them out the new tract rod ends were very tight so I took one of the old ones and cut a few grooves along the length of the thread with an angle grinder (so it acted like a tap) and ran it in and out many times until the internal threads were free. Hope it works and best of luck with the rest of the job.
Hi bought a 135 there and I'm getting it done up by a mechanic but we're getting a machinery shed on out farm and want to do up a tractor I was thinking a 35 or a t20 and I am wondering out of the two which is the easiest as I want to learn on the job thanks great video
Hi Oisin. Not a lot of difference I'd say. The t20 would probably be the easiest but you may learn more (for example about the dual clutch and live hydraulics) by doing up a 35. Either are a good project. Hope this helps and have fun.

Hi. I added a little Owatrol Oil to the paint, it gives it a nice finish. My grey parts were brush painted but they came out perfect thanks to the oil. No brush marks. On the cab, see my answer to Paul Storvik in the comments. In short I bought it from Valdi Machinery Sales in Carrick-on-Shannon but there is also a company in Laois selling similar cabs. Check Donedeal. The quick hitch (with hydraulic toplink) I made is invaluable, saves a lot of hardship. I have a transport box, topper, log splitter (not hudraulic), set of pallet forks, ball hitch frame (for my car trailer) and I am constantly changing from one to the other. I was thinking of building a log splitter but I don't think the hydraulic pumps would deliver enough to drive a log splitter unfortunately. My brother just made a 16ton splitter but he has a 100hp Valtra with lots of oil capacity. Regards Tom.

On the paint I applied 1 coat of primer/undercoat and 2 (or possibly 3, not sure at this stage) coats of grey topcoat. I look forward to checking out your videos. Thanks.
Hi. It's 7' 1" to top of cab. If you are fitting a flashing beacon allow extra for that. Also, the roof can "pop up" about 6" at the front for ventilation. Easy to forget and snag in a low doorway.

Hi fergie man. I am not sure. I think the tef 20 probably does not have a "live lift" (dual clutch), i.e. every time you put your foot on the clutch the hydrulic pump stops, so I don't know how much use the external hydraulics would be to you.
Hi I made a timber frame from 2" x 1 1/2" timber and covered it with aluminium bubble wrap insulated foil that I had over from a campervan conversion. I just stapled the foil to the timber frame and sealed the joints with tape. I used a simple heater as the heat source. Be careful not to use any electrical/naked flame type heated as paint fumes and naked flames are not a good mix!!

Hi. Yes I had a MF35 Workshop Service Manual that I found on the internet. 383 pages and it is very detailed. The "toe-in" for the steering was taken from the manual - which actually states 0-1/8" so I set it at 1/8" as I think it runs better that way.

Mine are OK. The bracket is flat and the axle is round so there is a slight gap on the inner side of the brackets, but where the bolts go through is was fine.

@@neilgallagher7794 Hi Neil. Other than the problem with the rear window struts that I mentioned in the video I have no issue with the cab. Naturally there is a bit of work involved in getting it fitted but nothing too major. Hope it goes well with the 4000.

Hi Stephen. I didn't remove all the old paint. If it was sound then I didn't see much point in removing and going back to bare metal. I used various wire brush tools in an electric drill to remove any loose paint. Anything that didn't come off with the mechanical brushing is not going to fall off later. I then gave the parts a good cleaning with paint thinners to remove any oil/grease/contamination just before applying the primer/undercoat. On the Owatrol Oil paint conditioner I can't remember the mix but I basically followed Owatrol's recommendation. They have a good website with all the details. Hope it goes well for you.

Hi Paul. They are well seasoned logs ;-) Yea, I load it up until the front wheels are close to dancing. Have to reverse up some hills to keep the nose down, as I am sure you have done. The "quick hitch" I made throws the load out about 4" more from the tractor (which is a bit of a negative) but it's still worth it when I am changing implements.
Hi Silvio. If I understand your question correctly you are asking, "how much is an MF 35x worth, before restoration"?. That depends on it's condition. A reasonably good condition 35x could be worth €3000-€5000. One in poor condition (needing a complete overhaul) could probably be bought for €1000-€2000. Hope this helps.

That’s the way to recycle , carbon footprint of that tractor disappeared 30 years or more ago . Imagine we could recycle lots of farm equipment like this instead of buying new .
I'm with you on that. Lots of farm equipment (and other machinery) left in fields and hedges. Shame they are (at least) not brought to metal recycling centres.

MF 35-X and 135 were and are very popular all around the globe. Possibly the best small rear wheel drive tractors ever made, with Perkins.

Hi.
It's 7' 1" to top of cab. If you are fitting a flashing beacon allow extra for that. Also, the roof can "pop up" about 6" at the front for ventilation. Easy to forget and snag in a low doorway.
U wouldn't believe how much low down torque this small thing has.

I am not sure. I think the tef 20 probably does not have a "live lift" (dual clutch),
i.e. every time you put your foot on the clutch the hydrulic pump stops,
so I don't know how much use the external hydraulics would be to you.
Does your 35 have the live drive back end or how does she run the spool valve, would the lift not drop?

I made a timber frame from 2" x 1 1/2" timber and covered it with aluminium bubble wrap insulated foil that I had over from a campervan conversion. I just stapled the foil to the timber frame and sealed the joints with tape. I used a simple heater as the heat source. Be careful not to use any electrical/naked flame type heated as paint fumes and naked flames are not a good mix!!

Hi. Yes I had a MF35 Workshop Service Manual that I found on the internet. 383 pages and it is very detailed.
The "toe-in" for the steering was taken from the manual - which actually states 0-1/8" so I set it at 1/8" as I think it runs better that way.
I must be the only man on the planet who pulled off a Massey 135 steering wheel by hand, granted it did bend it but I was replacing it anyway

Hi Jack. I believe it is just "Massey Ferguson Red". That's all I asked for at the local tractor parts guys. The grey was "Stoneleigh Grey".

These are the ones I got and they work perfectly. 500mm between centres extended. 200mm stroke, 100N pressure.
Type 6 ends. Remove the brackets that come with them and they plug straight in (you may have to open up the holes in the cab brackets).

Do your rear cab mounting brackets sit flat on the rear axle? Or are they slightly wonky? Mine seem to have a gap inbetween the bracket and the axle?
Mine are OK. The bracket is flat and the axle is round so there is a slight gap on the inner side of the brackets, but where the bolts go through is was fine.

Hi Neil.
Other than the problem with the rear window struts that I mentioned in the video I have no issue with the cab. Naturally there is a bit of work involved in getting it fitted but nothing too major. Hope it goes well with the 4000.

Hello Tom what did you Use to remove the paint on your Massey also did you use much oil for paint cheers
Hi Stephen. I didn't remove all the old paint. If it was sound then I didn't see much point in removing and going back to bare metal. I used various wire brush tools in an electric drill to remove any loose paint. Anything that didn't come off with the mechanical brushing is not going to fall off later.
I then gave the parts a good cleaning with paint thinners to remove any oil/grease/contamination just before applying the primer/undercoat.
On the Owatrol Oil paint conditioner I can't remember the mix but I basically followed Owatrol's recommendation. They have a good website with all the details.

Yea, I load it up until the front wheels are close to dancing. Have to reverse up some hills to keep the nose down, as I am sure you have done.
The "quick hitch" I made throws the load out about 4" more from the tractor (which is a bit of a negative) but it's still worth it when I am changing implements.

Hi Silvio. If I understand your question correctly you are asking, "how much is an MF 35x worth, before restoration"?.
That depends on it's condition. A reasonably good condition 35x could be worth €3000-€5000.
One in poor condition (needing a complete overhaul) could probably be bought for €1000-€2000. Hope this helps.

That’s the way to recycle , carbon footprint of that tractor disappeared 30 years or more ago . Imagine we could recycle lots of farm equipment like this instead of buying new .
I'm with you on that. Lots of farm equipment (and other machinery) left in fields and hedges. Shame they are (at least) not brought to metal recycling centres.
Pretty much runs on fumes and lasts forever.
