    Regarding playtesters, try not to ask "why were you trying to do this" because it'll make them feel stupid. Phrasing matters a whole lot. Be careful how you ask and what you ask. This applies more to developers in specific communities, rather than paid testers but still. Testers are the most important asset of level designer. Treat them with care and respect.
