  • DC Comics latest initiative, Dawn of DC, is heading down the homestretch. A successive string of failure led by bad event after bad event. Lazarus Planet kicked off Dawn of DC and Absolute Power brings it to and end. But does anyone know why Dawn of DC even happened? Plenty of fans know why it failed. Wes breaks down the Dawn of DC and explains why it never gave DC Comics fans a reason to believe things were getting better. Why Dan of DC is a 100% failure.

I’m a big DC fan, but the last time DC excited me was the start of rebirth and the promise of re-establishing core relationships such as Green Arrow & Black Canary, Barry & Wally, the Wolfman/Perez Titans, etc. I eagerly hoped Wonder Woman would instrumental in helping the main characters break through the lies of new 52 to reclaim their tried and true identities, feelings, and connections. Instead, WW wasn’t even motivated to find out why her returns home had been a lie.
DC doesn’t need another reboot. It needs an editor in chief that cares about the characters and good stories which do not go out of th way to contradict a rich history which should be mined for the nuggets of gold and the diamonds formed over time. Every book should pass these questions before release: does it contribute to the longevity of the character(s), does it make sense in the context of the DC larger world, and is it close to what fans want (not the current writer’s isolated fanfic or need to express himself or herself- reserve that for original series with original characters).

They may have been trying to do what what worked in the past with the armor suit without understanding the story well enough i e the silver age storyline where superman can't use his powers temporarily because a red star goes supernova or has a solar storm ,or something along those lines, and it is close enough to earth when it happens that red solar radiation temporarily blocks the yellow sun's rays and superman uses a supercar made from kryptonian tech or something to make up for his temporary lack of powers intil the red solar radiation dissipates lol!!!

I don't think replacing "Titans" with "Justice League" in Beast World's title would have helped as the Titans themselves are popular in their own right but how DC events have been going probably lowered most people's enthusiasm. Or they just don't like furries or Tom Taylor. Fair enough.
I do have to agree the Titans have some of the blame in the BW mess. Not because Gar was dumb, transforming into Starro was the only way to stop the Necrostar from taking over Earth and better than getting a real one like Batman and Mr Terrific were going to because got tonmake them look bad for Beast Boy to look good. I'd say it was bad the Titans didn't seem to care much about the cult that jump start the event as well as had their friend as a member and rather plant trees. As well as Raven not being aware the evil self she was supposedly so careful about letting out wasn't in the damn gem and her evil self was the one that started the whole thing and now she's trapped instead.
As a Titans fan this has been a sadly underwhelming era for them especially as supposed League replacement. Not to mention the dumb retcon to Starfire's origin and how Raven's been handled.

At the end of the year DC is releasing new "DC Finest" graphic novels which look almost identical to Marvel's Epic Collections. These look fantastic and a great start for those new to collecting DC. The Batman one especially which collects 1986-1987 Detective Comics and Batman, including Year One and Two. I would highly recommend getting these for some great classic stories.

I just got back into comics last year at the beginning of 2023. I have actually enjoyed some of the DODC stuff that's been out. Not ALL of it but I'm reading Batman And Robin, Shazam, Wonder Woman, Superman 78, Batman Off World, Kneel Before Zod, Power Girl, Wesley Dodds Sandman and Beast World. While they're not mind bending philosophical definitions on life and heroism, they're entertaining enough reads. That's really all I ask for. Keep the politics out of it and just make it a fun read. I've barely touched anything in Marvel over the last year because they're so obsessed with multiverses and Miles Morales, Which is sad as I used to be a big Spider Man fan. Now it's everything Miles and they turned Peter into a bearded hipster douche.

I actually loved Dawn of DC! Thought it was a great jumping on point for newer readers. Spirit World, Wesley Dodd, Far Sector, Shazam, Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad: Dream Team, and Unstoppable Doom Patrol were excellent. I also liked Hawkgirl. Knight Terrors was unnecessary. My only major critique is they needed an Aquaman title.

I disagree that its a 100% failure. Titles like Green Arrow, Flash and even Wonder Woman (which I know you haye Tom King), have entertaining storylines. Overall, these 3 titles are better than their prior creative teams. Also the revamped Birds of Prey is really good so far. You may despise Tom King, but his first 6 issues in WW have resulted in a much needed sales boost for the title.

The dawn of whaaaa?????…….. Honestly even if I wasn’t too cynical empathy of marvel and dc, I wouldn’t even knew they had some sort of event and would just be more likely burned out. And how did tomorrow king wonder woman sales were higher? I thought it would’ve sank even further, after ww gotten multiverse power something and then some plot armor that she goes back and fighting darkseid something…….. Lets face it, dc comics are everywhere and throwing “spaghetti on the walls” *air quotes* and the entire wall is filled with spaghetti which the previous spaghetti have rotten and made the room smell so bad, it will kill a person the moment they smell it.
The moment they did the death metal and that after event name I forgot or perhaps way before that from doomdays clock, they were destined to die as they registered their fate to it. I still think the super hero super power and plot armor reaching too much pointless, even they “nerf” superman, they plot it wrong and gave the armor from a questionable enemy is even further stupid. Like I said, the power scaling has reach to the point that it’s impossible to nerf them without wiping out the entire dc lore and the history completely. And no, it’s not like how dc reset their universes as the way they do is smoke and mirrors to look like they reset it when they kept the old universes junk from the curtains and falls out from it which the dc say it was a joke to save faces and been doing this fake reset for so long as the first crisis event and the new generations don’t give a crap about it or the current stand of the new dc as well as older readers starting to notice when trying to explain the endless rabbit holes of dc which they starting to realizes the so many continuities errors that either some realizing it and acknowledging it or just plain out denying it because my guess its all a dream and that these god like super powers are imagination limit to what they can think and making up words to look like alot when it isn’t.
I think dc comics have finally ran itself to the corner and unable to get out from it like a bad drug addiction.

All of these events mean nothing if they don't remain set in stone. Why bother acting as if anything matters when another event will just happen again? Nothing is sacrosanct. This is why Crisis On Infinite Earths was a mistake.
Once DC Comics realized that they can just reincarnate their comic book universe as a gimmick to trick comic book fans out of their money, DC Comics began to stand for Deceptive Con Comics. I gave up on DC after Zero Hour: Crisis In Time. And with good reason. It's been nothing but a soulless corporate cash grab time and time again ever since.

A bit biased against Tom Kings Wonder Woman here. Wonder Woman didn't just increase sales a "little bit", it was one of the only successes in Dawn of DC along with Action Comics. Both comics are firmly in the top 20 now, where they weren't even in the top 50 before.
There are currently 4 Dawn of DC books in the top 50 sales as of January 2024:
    Batman (4th place)
    Action Comics (18th Place)
    Wonder Woman (19th Place)
    Superman (24th Place)
Before Dawn of DC, Batman was around the same, Superman was only just in the top 50 and Wonder Woman and Action Comics were well out of the top 50.
Dawn of DC was definitely a failure with there being only 4 comics in the top 50. I've read most of them and for the most part the comics were just as bad as before Dawn of DC with a couple exceptions. I agree with Green Lantern being one of them. This is the best Green Lantern we've had in a while and hopefully it gets more popular.
