I started with the ax43, returned it for the ax 53 because I needed the eye viewfinder in bright sunlight, and mostly for the manual control ring. Missing on the ax 43. Ax 43 also does not have the button to quickly switch to camera mode, also ax 43 does not have night shot, which can be handy.

All are different trims of the same model. AX33 is the cheapest and has a small sensor. AX43 adds a larger sensor. And AX53 adds a viewfinder.

The only problems I've ever had with my AX53 were because of the cripple hammer, stopping me from full manual control. Using it in shutter priority is a great tip though, as it can get painful otherwise. Apart from that, I love it. While 95% of the time I'll use the flip out screen, I've definitely had to use the viewfinder in bright sunlight so I'd rather it was on there. The stabilisation is next level too! Thanks for the video, great work.

Hi Brian, can we record the video on the computer/ laptop directly corrected only with the HDMI cable? Do we need additional hardware to do this. I'm asking this because I intend to use the FDR-AX43 for the podcast/ vlog and to record a 2-hour video in 4K would be something like 216 GB per hour and this is not something for an SD card(even if it is possible)?

I feel using a gimbal has it's uses as well depending on the type of shot you want. For example if you are moving quickly and need that extra smoothness. If you're walking slow then it'll be fine. All depends on the application.

I feel a gimbal could have its uses for this camera. Whenever I shoot a video while walking, the picture still hooks left and right with my footsteps with it set on active. Maybe I need to hold it differently, but I get that all the time. I just got a mirrorless Fujifilm X-T4 and I'm trying to justify needing one compared to the AX-53. So far the only real advantage is the larger sensor so better in low light with less noise. The mirrorless is heavier, less stable without a gimbal and seems to get pretty hot in summer weather. Also has the 30 min limit like you said. It's a hard choice, but I may end up keeping the AX-53, idk.

Does the 5-axis gimbal inside resolve the issue of ‘bouncing’ of 3-axis gimbals in cameras like the Osmo Pocket. They make z-axis stabilizers for the Osmo Pocket, which helps a bit, but does not resolve the issue completely. How does this camera deal with the bobbing up and down when walking. Is it able to stabilize the Z-axis as well? Also, what is the 5th axis do?

Not sure how the set ups and hook ups would work yet, computer, etc, maybe a Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini HDMI Live Stream Switcher for multiple cameras in the future....I'm between a camcorder and the Sony Alpha ZV-E10....I'd like to shoot in 4k 120hz but still learning about it. It doesn't seem possible. I hear people saying the mic would be better hooked up directly onto the camera to avoid sound mismatching with video. These camcorders don't seem to be able. How would you do it in my situation, please. Budget: camera around $1000, + the Shure mic $250 + all other stuff i have it in the bag already. Thank you.

Other than I can’t control anything else when I use it with a manual shutter speed and manual focus, I still love this camcorder and own 3. However they do overheat when doing a lot of off and on recording on warm days, it doesn’t shut down, it just won’t turn back on, however I’ve found when it won’t turn back on, I just pull the battery and put it back on and it will start again, but I’ve never had one shut down while I was recording for any reason other that a dead battery. I only shoot with the viewfinder which I agree is tiny, but I just wear a floppy hat to help keep the sun out of my eyes. And I rarely use 4K because I need the 60fps and extra zoom. I only use 4K for parties so that I can get great screen shots so that I always capture that special r not so special moment.

NTSC versus PAL: I recently bought a used AX53 here in the USA, and it turned out to be a PAL version. I was under the impression that the PAL versus NTSC Handycams had different model numbers so I wasn't prepared to look closely at that. Two critical comments:
    (1) On the bottom of the AX53 (and probably the AX43 and AX33) there is a label, and in the top right corner of that label it should say "7.4v". Just to the left of that "7.4v" it will say either 60i (for NTSC) or 50i (for PAL). My PAL AX53 does indeed have "50i" on that label.
    (2) There is an operating system "Hack" that can change the operating system from PAL to NTSC (I have no idea about going the other way). I felt like that the PAL mode AX53 as useless to me so I took the gamble and installed the hack (I had to download a program to my WIndows10 laptop computer, then connect my AX53 to that computer and let that program install the hack from my computer). You'll have to do a RUclips video search to find the instructional video (there are at least two of them; I felt like I had to watch them both to get all the proper information). The PAL mode gave me the options of 25p or 50p; once I did the hack my options were 24p, 30p, and 60p and all the video was in NTSC format.

What kinds of files does this produce? I'm moving away from a gopro to a "real" camcorder for many reasons, but one thing I LOATHE about the gopro is that it only records a certain amount of data per file and will start a new file, even if you haven't stopped recording. Not only that, but the way they name these broken up files is beyond infuriating because they're not in order. For example, if I record for a couple of minutes, stop, then record another short clip, the two file names would be something like GX1001 and GX1002 but if I record a long clip that gets broken up into 3 files and then record a 2nd short clip, the 4 total files will be GX1001, GX1002, GX2001, GX3001 with the last 2 files being the continuation of the first file. Seems easy enough with 4 files, but when you have FORTY clips and some of them have 1 file, some have 2 files, some have 3 or more files, it gets tough to keep track. Anyway, would love to know how this records!

    Hi Boomer,
I wanted to answer your question regarding a wide-angle lens that might fit your Sony Fdr ax53 camcorder. Truth be told there are any number of consumer grade wide angle lenses that will fit your unit. The one single stipulation is the thread and ring size. These cameras are fitted with a 55MM threaded lens. This means you can put any kind of lens and lens adapter over the top of the existing video camcorder if it has matching thread and ring sizes. A 55MM lens is a very common and standard lens size. That being said, Canon or Nikon puts out wide angle lens adapters that are designed to fit right on top of the lenses for the DSR cameras. I'm permanently pissed off at canon and will never buy another canon product for the rest of my days. However, Nikon has one such lens that might interest you. I'll include the link for it from amazon for you below.
I enjoyed your presentation, although I would have liked seeing more demonstrations from the camera itself. However, you are very well spoken and have a pleasing enough delivery for your information, thank you. But...

Where on Earth are 4K60 camcorders at the ~£600 mark?! I've been waiting for a 4K60 camcorder around this price range for about 8 years now. But every year all any of these companies seems to do is rebrand their 4K30 again!
The Sony AX-53 came out very late 2015 / early 2016, which in itself was a refresh of the AX-33. Are Sony really saying they have no better sensor and processor to make a new camcorder in 2020? So what do Sony do? They remove the EVF from the the AX-53, call it the AX-43 and then charge the same price as what you can already pick up the AX-53 for anyway!
Why is 4K60 taking so long to arrive at a non-pro price point? Phones and GoPros have been doing 4K60 for years and in many cases have even moved from this to 4K120 and 8K30. When are we going to see Panasonic or Sony bring this to ~£600 price point? HC-VX2 or AX-63? They wouldn't even need to spend that much money developing them either, they could keep the lens and OIS and body and everything else the same, just update the sensor and processors to give us 4K60 using H.265.There is no technical reason they can't, heat has nothing to do with it as I said phones and action cameras have done it for years and have a much tighter power/heat envelope to work within.
What annoys me most is all these companies keep crying out that 'phones are stealing all their customers' but then they are so slow to give us new features such as 4K60. Phones come out every single year and move things on significantly every single year, so is it really a surprise customers forget amount them?
For my use-case which is filming low league football, handheld, pitch side you do need a proper dedicated camcorder because the image stabilisation is much better on these than it is on a larger sensor mirrorless camera plus the fast electric zooming and super fast focusing is very much needed too. I just wish someone brought out 60fps version because I often need to slow down clips for goals or fouls, a 4K60 version of the AX43 or HC-VX1 would be a perfect camcorder.

My guess is these companies are either not willing to change with the times or they want to keep the features you want at a premium for as long as possible. At any rate have you looked into the used camera market? I'm sure there's someone selling the camcorder of your choice at a fraction of the retail price on places like eBay, Kijiji, Craigslist, and many others like Facebook marketplace.

I have a 6400 already and it takes great pictures and videos. The camera only has stabilzization with certain Sony lens. The ax53 has it built in. With the 6400 you can change lense with the ax53 you cannot. If you’re more prone to pictures than the 6400 is the way to go. However if you want stabilized video with the 6400 you would have to use a gimbal. In addition the 6400 has a mic port for external audio recording. Not sure if the ax53 has ports??

My AX-33 (basically the same cam) just broke after 2 years - the camera has this shitty USB cable sticking out of the side of the cam that plugs into the handrest while not in use in the computer. The thing gets used and moved back and forth so often (as you will use it) that the cable plastic has weathered and torn, and the wires inside are sticking out/frayed/broken (at the part where it attaches to the camera). I hope for Sony's next range of camcorders in this style they remove and replace this USB connection style completely so that, either it is an ultra-tough cable, or there is no cable at all but perhaps a port instead.
