Great advice and a great video from TJ. How about never even visiting the property in the first place? Get the client to send in a video of the area by Whatsapp and then using this terrific formula to build the estimate - and make it into a template so you don't have to do it again. Or of course you can use TJ's excel sheet here. It gets rid of a lot of tyre kickers and sets expectations for when you do go to seal the deal - and it saves an awful lot of time and money. Its super simple to use and it's free. You will find it if you are interested enough so I won't leave a link.

Hi mate I'm an OK painter and need a career to go to. What's the best way to go about being self employed. Is there any tips you have for me. I was told just to go self employed and promote.
Pricing a job comes with experience, you look at a job and know how much you want at the end of job. There were no computers to do this for you back in my day.
This is absilutely brilliant...especially good for those young newly self employed...nobody on youtube shares anything like this and it can take years to understand how to price work..i need to get myself something like this. Thanks for this info..videos on how to talk to customers etc when pricing work are non existant too so a good one to get into! I find myself talking rubbish to customers and still wonder if im doing it right. Nobody teaches these skills in college lol. Keep them coming. Great youtube channel!

Really great video, I’ve always priced up a bit tongue in cheek, sometimes I think it’s too much but have been given the jobs luckily. I must be a mug as I tend to work 10-12 hours a day on jobs, I don’t charge for extras ie non painting jobs I’m there for, time to change that as I’m in my first year on my own doing working solo and bent over backwards for my punters. I’ll play about on Excel similar to what you have shown and see how the figures work out, I’m probably on 5p per min lol

This is good to know I will try this from now on but I do have a question I do not hang wallpaper and I only remove it dose that make me a less of a painter and decorator in your opinion tell you why I am no good at hanging wallpaper at all so am I not a true painter and decorator
+Pure diy I was always told that a Decorator can hang wallpaper as well a paint making you a Painter and Decorator. I don't know how true that is? Maybe someone else can answer the question too? The news is that Paper hanging is a skill that can be learnt and that means once you've learnt how to hang wallpaper you could earn more money. I hope this helps?
To be a good wallpaper hanger you have got to LOVE hanging wallpaper! The best tools for the job believe it or not, is long fingernails, to mark where to cut, it's all about feel. I remember we used to joke about our old boss who had long femine finger nails but he was a bloody good paper hanger! He could paste, cut, and hang toilet paper to ceilings, he was that good! I was his apprentice and used to paste his paper, and boy if I got it wrong....hahaha, no machine pasters back then. Keep at it lad, it takes years.

I just look at the job and work out how many days it takes and times that by my day rate, add materials and 20% profit
