  • Within the framework of the EU project Small Craft Emergency Response and Survival Training for Arctic Conditions (SMACS) a unique 30 hour exercise in collaboration between Chalmers and the Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) was held. On May 26, 2014 the exercise was commenced in an area northwest of Gothenburg. Here 11 participants got to experience, as realistically as possible, an emergency situation at sea and to see which elements of risk that exists.

    Just seeing this there should always be an extra raft a you could put 6 in each , you would have double the provisions and safety equipment. And if needed you could put the 12 in one raft if one sank

    Seeing as how cramped the all were in there, the first thing i thought was "how do they manage going to the bathroom with all those people and getting in and out of those wetsuits?"
    Anyone? How did they manage that?

    This exercise was done under favorable weather conditions. That data they received is valuable for future rescue missions. A test still should be done under unfavorable weather conditions. But any smart person would know by doing so is a risk not coming back. If that boat was really going down in 30 foot seas. Half the people wouldn't have there suits on pitching rolling deck. Who knows how many would make it to the life raft. Life at sea is a crap shoot.

    • @kd5you1
      @kd5you1 5 лет назад

      I agree, and in a test the people on the life raft know they are going to be rescued. In a real life situation the chance of not being located is very real.

    I think here the people should give ideas for doping better job when constructed a new safe boat, i think the boat should have a fish trap to increase life terms when a long situation before the rescue, i saw in the other day an easy bottle trap made by brasilians i think..só, in my idea the safe boat could have one of this chip and easy bottle trap inside the kit..and the exercice should been done with the autorities,without them know it was a exercice and with no references to see how it work to find the vítims.

      There is food, but also equipment to catch fish in all SOLAS approved life rafts.
      This was a joint excercise between Sjöräddningssällskapet, which takes part in 80% of all SAR operations in Sweden on a voluntary basis, and Sjörfartsverket, which is the authorities. We do excercises together regularly, although this one was truly taking it another step.

    This 'experiment' reminds me of the foul concoctions my sons made up when they were in primary school. Just an unpleasant waste of time but we had to play along with their earnestness. Your Viking forebears would be unimpressed. Of course it works, some clever designers invested into its construction. I would rate the entire exercise as 'Not quite brave enough for a Darwin award' attempt but well inside the 'Fun for your duller Nerds but I wish I wasn't a Geek' category.
