I just did this mod on my porta pro's! You make it seem easier than it actually is. It took me 3 days and a lot of frustration to do this but now they look great and sound great. Thanks!
I have been modding and soldering for years but I have never thought to use a piece of putty to hold down what I am working on so that I no longer need to grow a third hand for soldering. Thankyou!
Not a lot of headphones with detacheable cables in this price range tbh, apart from ChiFi in-ears.. If you want 75 dollar Porta Pro`s, sure, but they`re made to fit a price bracket.
I used this stuff called milliput to glue the connectors in. It's a epoxy but it has the consitancy of blutac so you can mold it into shape by hand. Perfect for this sort of thing in my opinion. Just remembered I wanted to share that.
This is the type of attention to detail with links to all parts is what id want to reward. High value video. Ill add a personal thank you since think it went above and beyond a mere like.
Ended up breaking the cables on mine so it's time to finally do the mod. I was wearing them and my dog jumped up and caught the cable pulling it off of one of the drivers. I checked and the pads are still fine though the strain relief thing completely snapped off.
Ok, I love the guides and all but my main request (for this video and all your koss ones specifically) can we get a parts list for the parts that you used? I really would like to know what parts and cables you use (really hard to find y-split covers or just which wires to buy) Really want to mod my 4 pairs of koss headphones (2 portapros, 1 sportapro, 1 ksc75) and a few other headphones I have but finding parts (the right parts) seems harder than the work itself Great work tho, love the channel!
We are trying to do up a consolidated lists for parts and should be posting them on our tutorial blog on our website and also on the new tutorial series
The little cable covers on the stock Porta Pros are quite fragile, broke both on one side, and one pin in the other. Found it easier to remove the cover on the KSC75s.
Love your channel but I have a very small ear canal so I cant use in earbuds so can you recommend Half in earbuds with good bass please as I find it hard to find reviews on youtube thanks Bob in the UK
Any chance you could make an updated tutorial for this but with the koss portapro speakeasy / communication headset. I'm also wondering is some sort of shells could be 3d printed for the microphone of said headset, to make it more directional. perhaps improve the quality as well
Modding the KSC75's with an mmcx connector with the thingiverse thingy is SO hard. It made me never want to solder again. I hope it's worth it. Thanks for the tips from the porta pro mod
I just ordered a set of KSC75's What is the thingiverse thingy you are referring to? My friend has a 3d printer and I was wondering if the thingiiverse part is essential to do the mmcx mod?
@@brendan6093 Uhhhhhh i have no idea where to link you to it's probably easy enough to find by googling. I'm pretty sure that you're going to want it if you're doing the mod. It raises the connector off of the headphones so you have clearance for it. You may be able to dremel/drill out a large enough hole in the normal plastic thingy but i wouldn't condone it
@@tn0wl361 perfect I will get onto printing some. After further research people have managed to fit the mmcx by dremelling but I don't think there will be much plastic to work with besides I do like the 3d print design as it looks awesome and is customisable colour wise and design wise
The volume will go down since there’s more resistance to get to 60ohms. You most likely need to turn the volume up more. Maybe us a dac if you want full sound like before. 10ohms then again won’t make a big difference.
hi, thank you for the tuto. Where can i find the little color wires to weld the MMCX conectors...? have you a link please..? and what is the paste you use to hold the wires and connectors for weld...?
Bought a second pair of porta pros to try the mod, seems fun Also, where did you bought the shiny MMCX cable? I'm looking for a cable with a color like Dunu Hulk without breaking the bank.
Thank you for tutorials. Will you also make a video for Grado's detachable cable? Perhaps using SMC/sma connectors? There's some videos online, but they don't show which part is ground on the female SMC mount or on the drivers itself to solder. I hope to put together a wooden Grado headphone from scratch. This is my first time attempt. I found some parts on Etsy for the headband, gimbal, wooden cups, but nothing on the mounting connectors. Any links to parts would be appreciated. Thanks again for your time.
Anything else outside of the centre pin that is gold plated is the ground. If you were to build on of these, I suggest a more efficient connector like 3.5mm as SMC is not suitable for a dual input design. You can check out what happens to the older SMC hifiman cables after some use. For connectors almost any hardware store should have those as they are general purpose
@@sgaudiohive Thank you very much for the advice. I hope your channel grows big. It has lots of informative videos for novices such as myself. It is great for the community.
When you tinned the cut cables, I have not seen you use flux I believe because you use rosin core solder which has flux already, but some forum modders insist on using flux anyway as they think the flux included with it is not enough. I need clarification please I want to try soldering.
How do you find the connections in regards to life span? I think RF push connectors only have a 100 push click life expectancy or something like that. Have you found issues with them wearing out? Also after searching MMCX online I see they have impedance ratings. Does this matter at all when choosing which one to use? I'm interested in doing similar with a vintage set of Pioneer SE-6's I picked up which doesn't have much room for modding.
I’ve recently replaced the cable of my two Porta Pros, but their sound became much worse after the replacement. What can be causing the issue? They seem completely different headphones.
It's highly likely you wired one of the side in the wrong polarity if the sound change is drastic as the stock porta pro cable is a very standard quality and almost all replacement will be better
I want to buy these headphones and im thinking about doing this because i saw some reviews that people say koss porta pros only lasts for a couple months. If that happens i can't buy it again cause they are expensive here. Is it worth to do it? I want a permanent solution.

but still one of the best headphones for under 50$

Hey there! Milliput is a brand of epoxy putty and it's exactly what we use for molding and fixing the connector!

Still wearing his Pebble watch! Now that's a true professional.
Well explained video and a link to all the parts you've used. You are the true MVP.
Thanks so much, had a clue for my ksc75 and kph30i, though the kph30i seems to have a different casing, hope you could mod that too someday!
Absolutely superb! Perfect. Simple, clear, and to the point. 10/10
Thank you very much!

Breaking the cable is a given seeing how flimsy it is, and non detachable. Unforgivable that they made the cable like that imo
You can clearly tell this guy have done a couple houdred of this once amazing!!
my soldering looks awful, but who cares if it's inside =) Thanks a lot. You literally saved my broken headphones.

Thanks for the share. excellent, precision work right there...
that white porta pro looks hella cool where did you get it?
It's the limited "Ice Cool" Edition
Great video. Question: how do the replacement grado pads compare to the yaxi in terms of sound quality?
I haven't got a chance to try them, but looking at the density i would think the grados would fare better on the mids and highs
Can you also do this on KSC75
its really similar but still it will be pretty great
I just noticed Koss porta pro is 60 ohm headphone but mmcx connector rating is 50 ohm so does it mean it will change sound or what?
Curious

hi, thank you for the tuto. Where can i find the little color wires to weld the MMCX conectors...? have you a link please..? and what is the paste you use to hold the wires and connectors for weld...?
The paste is called blue tack. The colored wires, you can strip off any old earpiece wires and you will have access to a lot of those
I failed to do this mod. The mmcx terminals are so tiny. You need really good eyesight! Ended up soldering the stock cable back on.
The links I have in my video should have a version where it's already soldered and ready to purchase
Bought a second pair of porta pros to try the mod, seems fun
Also, where did you bought the shiny MMCX cable? I'm looking for a cable with a color like Dunu Hulk without breaking the bank.
The wires are hand built by me, there should be a lot of these wires in the market
I just tried it and I rewatche the video 4 times to make sure this was the case. I did do it correctly...but now my headphones aren't working now...
Great mod! Can you please make a tws bluetooth adapter? I wanted to make one for myself but I don't how
When I'm done with my full review and mod on the qcy t5 I will do the adaptor tutorial
I'm not the person who asked but I'd love to see a bluetooth adapter tutorial too~~ :D

Everything he does is fast AF 😂👌🤖🚬
love the work and explanation
do you think it is possible to do this in an akg k414p? could you make a tutorial?
Any way to do a 3.5mm connector instead of the MMCX?
You can but there's not much space on the inside, have to do it on the outside
does a different cable affect the audio quality? been thinking of doing this mod for quite some time

depends on what solder you use, most cheap older can't adhere even when it is rosin core
Please make a video for mi hybrid pro HD DIY wire replacement
I dont have that Iem currently
Can i do the same way to my ksc75?
I just broke my prota . cos my iron soldier isnt hot enough to soldier. so all of it was burn inside instead 😢

Can i use the short mmcx connector?
Yes, just drill a different sized hole and at a different height
