The problem is that it starts nowhere and ends nowhere making the whole film a waste of time because instead of achieving anything or growing as a person they just end up back to the way it was at the beginning
Honestly a better book that they could've adapted would've been Cabin Fever or the Third Wheel. It would've fit in with the overall tone of the previous film's (more character driven, as in Cabin Fever, the Heffleys would've been shut indoors together with believable circumstances, or in Third Wheel, where Greg would/could learn the importance of sometimes being a wingman for your friends). The Long Haul (the book itself) is honestly the worst book they could've chosen, as there's effectively no plot or overarching goals other than a road trip. Hell, even the newer book in the series: the Getaway, would've been a better book, since the accidents that happen there are COMPLETELY (for the most part) believable. If they'd chosen Getaway as the source material, they'd still keep the family trip arch and be able to focus on the mother and her wanting her family to get along, whilst not having the string of convoluted and unfortunate consequences. With Getaway, the incidents only amount to nearly missing the flight, annoying people sitting next to you on the plane, finding a spider in your room and the baby sibling bringing a live creature back to the hotel. Unfortunate, but believable, as opposed to the flock of demon seagulls from hell (I'm exaggerating a bit here), an angry Terminator family that seeks to ruin your trip and having the boat literally fly off the rails with your kid inside. Honestly the most believable incident is either the luggage flying out of the boat or Roderick locking the pizza in a safe in that book, and the latter isn't something Roderick would normally do.
I think the reason they chose The Long Haul was for 2 reasons 1. Bc it was a summer plot for the book 2. I think Long Haul was the latest book at this time
Unfortunately, Manny also learns to speak fluent Spanish in the book version too. And he also built an entire house himself with sprinkler systems installed out of scrap wood in the latest book
I love the change in background in this essay, the first three video essays were nice and neat cause they were good movies and cause you liked them while this background reflects how bad this movie is and your disdain for it. it's a nice touch
To be fair, in "The Long Haul" book the Dad is always working and the Mom constantly nags, but taking characters directly from the books isn't exactly a good idea, considering they're one dimensional and same-ey.
This. The thing about the Long Haul is that it's more faithful to the characters in the books, but the problem is, those characters are not very likeable or well-developed.
I always thought they should have continued the series in a more adult way, though the source material doesn’t do that. Same actors from OG trilogy in the 4th film and beyond to follow them through high school. If continuing the film series past Dog Days was what they wanted, that would’ve made for much more interesting content. Great essay series. Diary of a Wimpy Kid IS cinema.
@@mahfuzvx3967 There was a good reason for Far From Home too.. I dont dislike it as much as he does, infact i actually like the film, but i can respect his opinion.
I honestly think that the foundation of all the issues with the movie is that they chose to adapt the long haul over any other diary of a wimpy kid book. The long haul is easily my least favorite book and considering they were kinda faithful to the book (to my knowledge. its been a while since I've read it), it makes sense to me why it was so awful.
Uhh, I read the book and the movie was ALMOST nothing like the book. Honestly I'm kind of sad this movie is connected to the Long Haul book because now people will hate it more, which sucks because I think the book is really fun
The first 3 movies are all like blood related brothers that are all unique, yet share a lot in common. The Long Haul is like the adopted half brother that everyone shits on.
I always thought a fourth movie should’ve had the OG cast and should’ve been about Greg in his senior year of high school. Honestly I would’ve preferred a movie about literally anything else besides what we got
I think that, since the theme of the movie is communication and the development of Greg's relationship with his mom, Greg could've been trying to tell his mom his discomforts with her way of raising them. The mom would be busy trying to figure out her son while trying to do her best at being a mom, but instead of paying attention to Greg's personality she uses blogs and books (like the ones she gets the mommy meals idea from) as her guides. As the film progresses Greg gets better at connecting with his mom with his dad's help at times. At the end Greg's mom has learned to listen to her children as individuals, and instead of getting to Mema's house they end up eating at a fast food restaurant while they are talking to each other, laughing like a real family.
The Long Haul is the weird cousin at the family reunion that your parents told you not to talk to

Original trilogy, like Star Wars to be immortalised into history diary of the wimpy kid will be
Why you talk like the tree lady from lord of the rings
I genuinely think that this guy should be a director he clearly understands the characters well and their development throughout the film
12:42 Manny is actually onwy thwee...
🤮🤮 thats worse
@@Browntable That part was in the books it was hilarious. I don't think it was meant to be a sad scene.
The only thing "good" about the new rodrick is that he wore an Avenged Sevenfold shirt and that's the smallest saving grace
Even though this movie is a sequel/reboot it feels like it’s one of those shit Disney rip-offs
Agentbro007 Bruh get ready for the Disney+ show lol
Elite 100 WHAT
I do not know what to call myself send help there’s gonna be a Disney+ DOAWK show
Ironically it's now owned by Disney
I think the reason they chose The Long Haul was for 2 reasons
1. Bc it was a summer plot for the book
2. I think Long Haul was the latest book at this time
ok so here’s my theory:
*the beardos are the original cast*
Lol yeah
I just got very deep in thought to this comment 🤔 💭
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔I think we're onto something here fellas
Would make sense if it hadn’t been shown that Zach is a literal chad now
I watched The Long Haul in theaters when I had like 9 or 10, even at that age it still rubbed me the wrong way. I’m 14 now.
Fun Fact : Jason Drucker ( the kid who played Greg in this) was a 1 year younger then what Zachary Gordon was when the first film came out .
THE ACTORS ARE SO DIFFERENT I CANT EVEN
Unfortunately, Manny also learns to speak fluent Spanish in the book version too. And he also built an entire house himself with sprinkler systems installed out of scrap wood in the latest book
They should just make one where Greg is in college and using the original cast
I love the change in background in this essay, the first three video essays were nice and neat cause they were good movies and cause you liked them while this background reflects how bad this movie is and your disdain for it. it's a nice touch
this video series was by far my favorite ever. thank you for making these videos and putting into words what i truly believe in my heart.
A thing isn't beautiful because it lasts. If it does, you get The Long Haul.
4:22 can't believe that this "Rodrick" is using a shirt of one of my favorite all time band's
Somebody hit me with a bat
To be fair, in "The Long Haul" book the Dad is always working and the Mom constantly nags, but taking characters directly from the books isn't exactly a good idea, considering they're one dimensional and same-ey.
This. The thing about the Long Haul is that it's more faithful to the characters in the books, but the problem is, those characters are not very likeable or well-developed.
Og frank and Susan: likable
Reboot frank and Susan: mean-spirited and not likable
My mum cried when he got the pig back and to this day I can't forgive her
The book it was based off was decent, but they did the book so wrong. I can’t even say how stupidly wrong they got this story wrong
AC Air Conditioning Yeah, the book was better
This isn’t the fourth movie, it’s the spin-off
I always thought they should have continued the series in a more adult way, though the source material doesn’t do that. Same actors from OG trilogy in the 4th film and beyond to follow them through high school. If continuing the film series past Dog Days was what they wanted, that would’ve made for much more interesting content. Great essay series. Diary of a Wimpy Kid IS cinema.
The best scene in the movie is the ending credits
I cringed 80% of this video, and the other 20% I didn't is to the scenes from the OG Wimpy Kid.
i love how most of his issues, like the pig and manny speaking spanish were stuff in the actual book
I had to watch Roderick sing baby for movie 3 just to remind myself what a cinematic masterpiece is.
same
I don't care how old Devon is, cast him in every Wimpy Kid film.
my sleep paralysis demon
I actually finished the whole movie, and I was so relieved when it finally ended. The road trip feels forever.
This is the equivalent of Far From Home for HiTop films
With this though there will be a good reason why the movie "broke him"
@@mahfuzvx3967 There was a good reason for Far From Home too.. I dont dislike it as much as he does, infact i actually like the film, but i can respect his opinion.
@@ayushshah2103 I think you should watch jay exci's reply to Hitop films video. He breaks the video down to show how his "criticism" is very flawed.
Mahfuz VX ah yes, a man of culture
Except this movie has a more understandable reason why it broke him.
"oh, and this scene was good too!"
**shows credits**
Excellent work my dude! You definitely opened my eyes to how great and underrated the OG Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies are
1:13 are we just gonna pretend rodrick wasn’t hot before
I honestly think that the foundation of all the issues with the movie is that they chose to adapt the long haul over any other diary of a wimpy kid book.
@@Puggers22 I agree. I think the Long haul is one of the best ones
You know what would be a hilarious joke:
If someone said this was a good movie 🤣
This movie is truly a turd in the wind.
Awesomesharkhand 😂
The first 3 movies are all like blood related brothers that are all unique, yet share a lot in common. The Long Haul is like the adopted half brother that everyone shits on.
I always thought a fourth movie should’ve had the OG cast and should’ve been about Greg in his senior year of high school. Honestly I would’ve preferred a movie about literally anything else besides what we got
@dr103 true
@dr103 but still they could have still had the same story just everyone is older and is in the modern world
It should have been about Wrecking Ball, and Greg and Rowley have a moment of a final goodbye. But it ends with the house getting destroyed.
I want the old cast back why Jeff kinney
R.I.P old Rodrick, the first one was perfect. We were all gay with real Rodrick😢😢😢
This is the “themepark cinema” that Scorcese warned us about
Remember its not "cinema" 😂
That themepark cinema is way better than this cra0
I think that, since the theme of the movie is communication and the development of Greg's relationship with his mom, Greg could've been trying to tell his mom his discomforts with her way of raising them. The mom would be busy trying to figure out her son while trying to do her best at being a mom, but instead of paying attention to Greg's personality she uses blogs and books (like the ones she gets the mommy meals idea from) as her guides. As the film progresses Greg gets better at connecting with his mom with his dad's help at times. At the end Greg's mom has learned to listen to her children as individuals, and instead of getting to Mema's house they end up eating at a fast food restaurant while they are talking to each other, laughing like a real family.
a 5 hour wait...whos w/ me boys
this video was wayyy funnier than the whole movie
