4” has louder cab noise under 2400 rpms. 5” has more at higher Rpms. Sorry I should have put that in the video. My next video will have towing cab noise and pulls!

This is where amateurs get separated from their hard earned money. Unless you prove it on a dyno, a larger diameter exhaust pipe does not necessarily mean higher performance. The mass flow rate of the exhaust is equal to the density of the gas x cross sectional area of the pipe x the velocity of the gas. So keeping the mass flow rate and gas density the same, increasing the cross sectional area, i.e. increasing the pipe diameter, would actually cause the velocity of the gas to slow down!! So if 5" pipe were really that good, why not just go to an 8" or 10" diameter pipe?!!! The 6.7 is not so large in displacement nor that high of a revving engine that you need to increase the pipe diameter. Ford optimized the exhaust pipe size to maximize flow rate and scavenging of the cylinders without excessive back pressure. So unless you know what you are doing, you are falling off the peak of the curve.
What? The restricting point on these trucks is the stock 3” down pipe, that restriction is what makes the back pressure. The 4” vs 5” SP is purely for your sound preference and will have zero effect on performance as almost everyone does a downpipe back SP. Unless you do a downpipe upgrade which is almost pointless as it basically maxes out at 4” since a 5” won’t fit between the engine & firewall without being modified.
@@kingdom1492 Without knowing all the engineering design parameters that went into the configuration of this motor, the only way to validate the performance change is to run it on a dyno. Read what I stated above on mass flowrate. This is a basic equation and when you make a change to the cross sectional area, by increasing the pipe diameter, the velocity of the exhaust gas must slow down. This is fundamental fluid dynamics. Just because every tuner out there does it doesn't necessarily mean the mod gains you HP. Of course, if it is proven with dyno runs, then it is there. I do not know how much head room is left in the stock motor to allow aftermarket to play with these variables. These modern engines are tuned within a very narrow bandwidth as the factory is trying to squeeze out every ounce of performance while keeping reliability and meeting the mileage standard. Lastly, if the restriction is in the downpipe, the rest of the exhaust may be sized by the factory to maximize flow. There is an optimal pipe size for a given set of parameters. If you increase the pipe diameter, you will decrease the exhaust gas velocity if all else remains the same and that may actually hurt the performance.
@@LWRC Again what are you talking about? These trucks have 3" downpipes, that is narrowest and closest thing to the exhaust manifold meaning it creates the back pressure. Anything past this downpipe that is bigger won't change the back pressure at all. The only way change the back pressure is add a larger or small pipe. I'm also not sure what this has to do with a tuner.
@@kingdom1492 You didn't understant what I wrote. The size of pipe down stream absolutely affects the exhaust flow. Study the mass flow rate equation and understand how all this works. If it still confounds you, ask a high school physics teacher to explain it. The downstream velocity helps to evacuate the exhaust manifold. This isn't rocket science but the engineers didn't just randomly throw these exhaust pipes together and called it a day. Lastly, the 3" downpipe may be the limiting factor at wide open throttle but at any other throttle position, the downstream pipe size absolutely affects the throughput velocity.
@@LWRC This is a joke right? Mass flow litterly shows why everything your said is wrong. Its this simple +V = -P or -V=+P which is changed by the pipe diameter. Since the downpipe is the smallest diameter the gas is at its lowest P & highest V in the system. Increasing the pipe size to 4"/5" will only change the gas speed & preasure downstream & has zero effect upstream. What you're saying is take a 4"d pipe cut it in half & put a 3"d piece in the center (downpipe) of the two halves then claim the 4" pipe downstream (straight pipe) from the 3" pipe effected the flow rate upstream at the beginning (manifold) of the 4" pipe? Venturi Effect show why the larger pipe after the constriction point make no difference upstream.

These modern engines are tuned within a very narrow bandwidth as the factory is trying to squeeze out every ounce of performance while keeping reliability and meeting the mileage standard.
Lastly, if the restriction is in the downpipe, the rest of the exhaust may be sized by the factory to maximize flow. There is an optimal pipe size for a given set of parameters. If you increase the pipe diameter, you will decrease the exhaust gas velocity if all else remains the same and that may actually hurt the performance.
@@LWRC Again what are you talking about? These trucks have 3" downpipes, that is narrowest and closest thing to the exhaust manifold meaning it creates the back pressure. Anything past this downpipe that is bigger won't change the back pressure at all. The only way change the back pressure is add a larger or small pipe. I'm also not sure what this has to do with a tuner.
@@kingdom1492 You didn't understant what I wrote. The size of pipe down stream absolutely affects the exhaust flow. Study the mass flow rate equation and understand how all this works. If it still confounds you, ask a high school physics teacher to explain it. The downstream velocity helps to evacuate the exhaust manifold. This isn't rocket science but the engineers didn't just randomly throw these exhaust pipes together and called it a day. Lastly, the 3" downpipe may be the limiting factor at wide open throttle but at any other throttle position, the downstream pipe size absolutely affects the throughput velocity.
@@LWRC This is a joke right? Mass flow litterly shows why everything your said is wrong. Its this simple +V = -P or -V=+P which is changed by the pipe diameter. Since the downpipe is the smallest diameter the gas is at its lowest P & highest V in the system. Increasing the pipe size to 4"/5" will only change the gas speed & preasure downstream & has zero effect upstream.
What you're saying is take a 4"d pipe cut it in half & put a 3"d piece in the center (downpipe) of the two halves then claim the 4" pipe downstream (straight pipe) from the 3" pipe effected the flow rate upstream at the beginning (manifold) of the 4" pipe? Venturi Effect show why the larger pipe after the constriction point make no difference upstream.
