All these Tacoma reviews fail to mention this vehicle has adaptive cruise control(standard on all toyota's since 2020). That's a huge feature. Also has auto high beams. It's also mentioned that it doesn't have NAV, you don't need it! Since 2020 Android Auto/Car Play are standard on the Taco. This truck is a bargain compared to what's on the market, take a look
ECT button makes the throttle much more responsive, less travel needed on the pedal.

ECT button is for towing. Higher (RPM) shift points on the automatic transmission. Probably get better acceleration by going into manual sport mode and shifting when you want. You can run those RPM's deeper into the power band before shifting to next gear. For someone who has spent their entire driving life with a manual transmission, this 6 speed automatic is the next best thing.

The best feature I like is the ability to shift gears manually. That feature works great on this truck. An automatic can be a pain in the ass on slick roads and climbing hills as it shifts all over and you play with the gas pedal. Why fight it? Just move that shift knob to the left and shift up or down into the exact gear you want.

I’m not suggesting people pay that price, it’s just MSRP, nobody in their right mind pays MSRP...as proven in the original comment. Fully dressed Tacomas have an MSRP much higher than $35k, yet as indicated in the original comment, that wasn’t the actual purchase price. When you compare this “base” to the competition, you’re getting a lot more for the asking price. Manufacture Suggested Retail Price and actual purchase price are 2 completely different things. At $35k for the TRD off-road with LED and tech, you were almost $4k shy of MSRP. The TRD off road for 2021 starts at an MSRP of $34k so you got a lot for an additional $1k. This SR isn’t a complete “base” model, it has add-ons. I know he’s talking like it is, but the SR starts at $26k with virtually no options including no 4wd, and no v6. Sure MSRP is $33k, but as shown here, you’d probably leave the lot with it for far less. Nobody pays MSRP. Yeah he’s talking like it’s a base model, but this isn’t a completely stripped 4cyl 2wd either. If $33k was for the true base model 2wd, 4cyl, then yes an MSRP of $33k is too much...but this isn’t, and nobody pays MSRP unless you’re new at buying of course.

For the base model SR, if yours is a true 4-cylinder like mine and need more power on highways (hence why I bought the truck, to mostly commute to work in a metro area), sprint boosters for this thing run about $350. Takes 10 minutes to install and considering I’ve seen videos of Taco owners with a V6 engine complain about it running slow on highways, seems worth the $$$ saved instead of an extra $3K-4K for the V6, is worth it if you’re not doing a lot of towing. Slap a set of 265s and rims on this thing and you’ve got a great looking truck. Even stock SRs look nice to me, but those stock wheels are as cheap as it gets man

The sr crew cab doesn't come with a long bed like in canada so the sr5 might be the one for me.I like the trd off road but don't have any where to use it, just areas where i go fishing which is dirt roads, so i can't justify the extra expense, besides the tacoma itself is pretty capable the way it is.I know people who bought the trd off road package, they don't go off road with them. I asked why didn't they go with the trd sport? They said they like the look of the trd. As far as truck size when I was younger I used to crave bigger more power, but its not a necessity to have that unless you have a big camper or use it for work. Having a trailer makes up for not having a fullsize truck for me, your able to carry heavier things and have more room for many items verses the bed of a full size truck. But if your on a budget and don't want over extend yourself financially you will find a way to make it work.

This 4x4 with a V-6 is not base model. The 4cylinder 2WD is a base model. Also the ECT button makes a difference ( albeit not much) in 4cylinder model. Probably not so much in V-6. I own a 4cylinder, great little truck but not a horsepower beast.

I went from a 2007 SR5 Prerunner to a 2021 SR 4x4. Since most of the saftey features and convience package is standard for 2020+ the SR is the best vaule in my opinon. I got it knowing I was gonna replace the stock suspension with Bilsteins and change to wheels and tires I wanted. If you're serious about offroading youll most likely put in a airlocker for the front diff so youll change out the rear factory electric one for an air locker as well so getting a Offroad or Pro would be a waste of money. If you're not gonna use it to offfroad and just drive around town then the regular 4x4 and LSD is enough for when you do. I also like it because theres less electronic components and thats what made my 2nd gen Tacoma so reliable and cheap to maintain.

The true basemodel would be around 25,000$. 159 hp 4 Cylinder and 2WD
If you just need a basic vehicle that can seat 4 and haul some stuff, it would be the one id recommend.
With just 160hp under the hood and no 4WD the drivetrain should last forever. Toyotas 4 Cylinders are reliable and tough engines so I would not expect any trouble even when you drive it hard and tow with it. Except for the lack of power...
Also it can only seat 2 which might be a disadvantage.
If you lease that truck for a few years you will have a decent vehicle and pay next to nothing for it.

@@jamesmoriarty9603 I haven't owned a tacoma of any type before, but I think a composite bed could be better than steel, and definitely better than aluminum, especially for a light duty truck. I imagine that like any other composite, UV exposure will eventually make it brittle, but this is unlikely to be a factor in our lifetimes as I am sure that the composite has UV protection engineered into it. The composite is probably lighter, has more grip, and it more resistant to impact (up to breaking point), and likely is much cheaper to replace in the event of breakage from abuse or accident than a comparative steel bed (lets not even talk about Ford). Seems like GMC must agree, because they also offer a carbon composite bed in their top tier Sierras...not that I would buy a GM product from the last 15 years!

I don’t need a locking diff tbh because I’d just want it as my daily driver. I just love the old school vibes it gives because of the standard lights and the all black grill. The taillights are also better looking than the TRD ones and like there isn’t any black in between the two side windows which I loveeeeee. I love how the inside is just simple but I wish it just had a sunroof. The thing is, I love how much stuff the TRD Tacomas give you but most of that will break over time no matter what and plus I want to lift my truck and do all the stuff on my own. I want to add leather seats and all that good stuff including a leather steering wheel cover. I also wanna add my own sound system that’s tuned to my liking. • @nmtaco8645

Overall yes...but I wouldn't say that with all the TRD models just with the pro, you could be limited on suspension choices and it depends what you want as far as mod...u can mod the heck out of any Tacoma. The Pro imo overpriced and thats even before 2020...i have a 2020 TRD Sport 4x4 Tacoma and I have most of the bells and whistles except I didnt get the light package. But I changed those headlights out and put Morimotos in and love them. I replaced the bumpers front and rear for steel and the rear bumper allows to continue to use my BSMs too. You can customize the interior too. But quite a few people get the base model 4 door with 4 wheel drive and then use the money saved by not purchasing the Pro for mods they want for what they want to do with the truck. I had a 2012 same model and I do miss the 4.0L. The shift points are also bizarre on the third gens...huntin gears like crazy. So I just decided I would regear a little earlier than planned to 5.29's and she is a dream to drive now...even have saved a few mpgs...not a huge improvement but enough to notice. I know they went to the 3.5L for fuel economy but paired with that transmission...its just not happy camper. But whatever Tacoma people choose...just do what makes ya happy...although good luck finding them. Ive had dealers calling asking if I would like to trade my truck in...they were really lathering when I told them it only has 4900 miles on her.

Only 33k..... ! I haven’t paid more than 20k ever for any car and keep my cars until the wheels fall off. The best car I ever owned was a used 1995 Camry that I paid $2000 for and drove it 7 years and sold it for $1700. Of course I’ll be retiring at 57 because I took the normal $500 car payment and invested it a 9% average over a 25 year time frame, add 10 more years and you can see how much “Only 33k” adds up to. Hopefully I’ve helped 1 person learn something today. I will say that it is a very nice truck. 🙂

ECT Power button is nothing new for Toyota, I had that in an '89 Camry. I think it's no different than having an overdrive button. But thanks for reviewing the base model, everyone seems to be just doing the TRD models
