- This is a deleted scene from "Der Untergang" Extended Edition. In this scene, Johannes Hentschel, a technican who stayed in the bunker to took care of the generators, comes out of Führerbunker and looks around. He sees the remains of Hitler and Eva Brown's burned bodies. He also sees the dead bodies of Josef and Magda Goebbels. When he came back in, he also passes by the dead bodies of General Krebs and Burgdorf, who had shot themselves. Johannes encounters a group of Soviet female medics. They ask Johannes where are Hitler and his wife, and Johannes tells them that they are dead. They also ask where are the clothes, and Johannes says he will show them. He stops one of the soldiers from opening a door. Another soldier opens it and she witnesses Goebbels' children's dead bodies. She looks at Johannes with surprise and a bit of anger in her face, and Johannes leads the women to Eva Braun's room. The women scream with joy with the clothes.

Johannes Hentschel stayed in the bunker until the end to look after the generators which were supplying electricity, air and water to the medical bunkers under the Reich Chancellery. By May 2nd, Johannes Hentschel and Rochus Misch, a radio operator, were only people staying in the bunker. They exchanged letters to their wives in case anything happens to them. Then Rochus Misch left the bunker and Johannes became the last person to stay in the bunker. He surrendered to the Soviets when they entered the bunker. He was in captivity until he was released in 1949. Hentschel died in Achern, 1982.

Actually he didn't expect to be taken prisoner at all from what I understand, because he was just a worker, and not military or government, but the Russians took everyone from the bunker and put them in prison, think he was released after 2 years though.
@@GabrielNicho I think so too. Hentschel was just a mechanic in the bunker, and he didn't participate in the battle. However the Soviets considered him as an important figure because he was in the bunker, so they took him.

He surely didn't want them to open that chamber...
@@MDE_never_dies I can't see anything wrong with 'to spare' in that sentence.
'Sparing' could only work by changing the sentence. For example, 'as if sparing her the sight, and sparing himself the shame of being reminded that he worked for people capable of killing their own kids would have been the best thing to do.'
You have any idea what the Soviets would do to the children of a high NatSocialist Party official like Goebbels? @@Swissswoosher The bodies of Hitler and Eva Braun were doused with petrol and were completely incinerated. Johannes Hentschel (10 May 1908 - 27 April 1982) was a master electro-mechanic for German dictator Adolf Hitler's apartments in the Old Chancellery. He also served in the same capacity in Hitler's Führerbunker in 1945. He surrendered to Soviet Red Army soldiers on 2 May 1945.
Yeap!
Him and the bunkers radio operator stayed at their posts even though it guaranteed their capture by the Red Army instead of attempting to get to the British lines when the bunker did their breakout
I literally just looked him up to learn about him lol
I was skeptical of this scene, why would female troops be the first into the Fuhrerbunker when they were not used in the fighting in the final days of the Battle of Berlin? But then I researched and found that an all female unit whos primary task was traffic management entered the bunker through an emergency exit in the chancellery garden. The second group was a a team of medics trained in German to treat German wounded. There's always something new to learn about the greatest conflict in human history.
Yes, it is true.
The first units that showed up in the Bunker were the snipers from Zhukovs troops and Polish 1st Army of Karol Swierczewski
Why would they treat German wounded
Oh that's really cool. This is one of my favorite movies and this is my first time seeing this scene. Really neat to see that it's historically accurate even down to the German speaking medics
@@jarnodatemathe fucking rules of war?
According to Hentschel, many of the Soviet women soldiers spoke rather broken, Yiddish-influenced German, suggesting that they were Jews. One however spoke German well and she actually asked "Wo sind die Klamotten?", "Klamotten" being a rather colloquial German expression for "clothes".
That's interesting. They could have been Jews because many Jews who lived in Europe spoke Yiddish.
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE In WW1 there had been a stereotype in the German and Austro-Hungarian armed forces that a Russian POW who spoke German was likely to be a Jew. For many Jews, standard German was merely a higher-prestige form of the Yiddish they might have spoken at home (there was a tendency to see Yiddish as "jargon" rather than as a proper language). This was sometimes carried over into WW2. At least one Soviet junior officer who broadcast propaganda in German over a microphone during WW2 was Jewish and her original language was Yiddish. At the end of the war, many Germans found that Western Allied troops, especially US and Canadians, who could communicate in German were frequently Jews although in a number of cases they were German-Americans.
@@stevekaczynski3793 Thanks for detailed explanation!
Hi there. Do you have a source for Hentschel memoirs? Thanks.
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE The Soviet women soldiers didn't speak the "Yiddish-influenced German". They clearly spoke Hochdeutsch, but with a heavy Slavic accent.
And yes, most of the German teachers in the USSR were Jews, and they usually taught the students not the foreign-sounding "official" German accent, but rather the "Yiddish-like accent", because it was closer in pronunciation to the Slavic languages. But the language itself was definitely High German, not Yiddish.
I always liked Hentschall's account of the eerie quiet in the bunker after the breakouts and before the Red Army arrived with just the corpses to keep him company. He was keeping the generator going that powered the field hospital in the Reich Chancellory building. Later a group of boozed up male Soviet troops appeared full of international solidarity and told him he would be a valuable expert worker back in Mother Russia. The party mood changed when a Commissar tried to open Hitler's study door which apparently had been torched and Hentschall tried to stop him as he feared the fire wasn't out. This was misinterpreted as counter revolutionary behaviour and he got carted off to join the other prisoners
Soviets thought that Hentschel had set up a booby trap or something. POOR HENTSCHEL!
Not completely unreasonable considering they shot any captured commissars
@@artificialintelligence8328 You are right. Germans sorted out commissars and jews in the Soviet army and killed them during the war.
@Rob Bob Thats not true, thats a myth from shitty movies. Why would the red army shoot its own somdiers?
@Rob Bob Shitty hollywood movies potraying US as the savior, while in reality USSR pushed the germans back from Stalingrad to Berlin with no foreign support.
The nurses found him because they traced where this marvellous boon of light for tending the wounded was coming from by following the cables. I think the nurses treat Hentschel fair in the film because they know he is the electricity provider and has surrendered to them in preference to abandoning his post and his responsibility. That deserves a little bit of respect. Even so, I think he is wise to step forward and meet them; they would have been much less gentle with him if he had tried to hide.
lol in fairness where is there to hide when the entire German army is destroyed/separated, everyone you knew in the bunker is pretty much dead and you're in the middle of a city that's been invaded and overrun by two armies

You've got a point. This scene showed active roles of Soviet female soldiers
Its still astounding to me how little credit is given to the SSSR in Western Media depictions of the war. Without them, the war would haved dragged on a lot longer and maybe even would lead to a truce with the western allies.
@@Bartnuschler I agree. The Soviets sacrificed over 20 million people during the war, but they had overcome and finally conquered Berlin and ended the war. They should be more credited.
They tended to suffer more if taken alive. In turn, they got more vicious. They became so desensitized and vengeful (not without reason) that they often watched and laughed as their colleagues gang-raped German women. And before you dismiss me as trumpeting a myth, I am well aware that such actions were NOT universal amongst Soviet troops: elite troops tended to maintain discipline, whereas most war crimes were committed by rear-echelon soldiers after they got drunk. Nor am I ignoring the horrific war crimes of the Wehrmacht, which were MUCH worse and WERE universal (or close to it).

I always found this scene fascinating. Henschel seeing the ditch where the bodies were burned, encountering the russians, said russians finding the bodies of the Goebbles Children, then proceeding to look at the clothes while Henschel looks on.
The one part I always look back on in this deleted scene was the russians reactions to finding the dead bodies of the children. @@EughhBrothereughh Soviets definitely weren't all that humane and heroes. Stalin's regime was brutal. At one point the Soviets had allied with the Nazis. The treatment of POW's the Soviets practiced was arguably worse than Japan and Germany, who all did heinous things to their prisoners, even for the mere crime of daring to dissent. And then there was the Gulag era, USSR was even cruel to their own people.

I noticed some funny inaccuracies in the image of the Red Army soldiers.
1. All the girls are unarmed, which is extremely unlikely in combat conditions.
2. according by the shoulder straps, the girls are comanded by a colonel. The Red Army, is proletarian, but this does not mean that subordinates can so familiarly go shopping with their superiors.
3. The colonel wears orders and medals on his overcoat. This is a violation of the statute
4. The colonel has the Order of Glory, 3rd degree. This award is for junior officers. Although there could have been a sharp career rise from lieutenant straight to colonel.
Interesting scene but I can see why it was cut. With the pacing of the end it wouldn’t fit. Also the bodies didn’t look too good, but that could have been hidden with some good editing.
Either way, I’m glad I found this.
I also agree. It would have been unnatural to put this scene in the end. In history, most of the gasoline had already been used to burn Hitler and Eva Braun's bodies, so Joseph and Magda Goebbels' bodies were not completely burned. I'm glad that you have visited my channel. THANKS!

Extended Edition/ TV Langfassung
You are right. I took these scenes from the German DVD you are talkin about. Still, these can be considered as deleted scenes because they were taken out from the theatrical version.
I wonder if this is based on an actual account, I have heard that when the Soviets found the bunker they did loot it of any goods, and promptly brought in a media unit to record the area for propaganda purposes (the video of Gobbels and his wife and children) but did Soviet medics and women at that actually raid the bunker for clothes and find a survivor who helped them?
This film is based on the book "Der Untergang" which was written by a historian Joachim Fest. He wrote the book based on the recored of the last days in Berlin, so it is most likely to be true.
It is completely true, the man in the video is Johannes Hentschel, an engineer tasked with keeping the bunker systems operating. Once all the military personnel had either ran or killed themselves he was left alone for almost a day with just bodies for company as he was a civilian he had no need to run from the Soviets. Though he inadvertently annoyed a Soviet officer a few hours after this video and was taken prisoner anyway.
