Subtitle: This is a complex topic now, I'll do my best to explain and to keep it simple at the same time. I am sorry for the confusion this may cause. The Prussian army did get rid of the rank "Corporal" in 1850, and they (now German army) had no such rank until 2021. They only reintroduced it because every other army in NATO seems to have that rank and this caused confusion in joint operations. "Korporal" was replaced by "Unteroffizier" in 1850, which is a rank between "Private" and "Sergeant" in other armies. At the same time German army had up to 5 different classes of "Private"/"Gefreiter" and the tasks other armies used to give to their "Corporals" were usually given to experienced "Privates" with higher classes like "Obergefreiter", "Hauptgefreiter", etc., while "Unteroffizier" had more complex tasks and more responsibility, closer to the tasks which are usually given to "Sergeants". Also German army has a rank (the lowest one) which is basically called "without rank" and is only used for untrained people or demoted soldiers. These "no-ranks" are named different each time, depending on the unit one is part of. Examples: "Soldat" (soldier), "Schütze" (rifleman), "Sansoldat" (med(ical) soldier), "Funker" (radio operator), "Panzergrenadier" (tank infantryman), etc. Interestingly these "no-ranks" are often translated to "Private" in English. IN SHORT: while in most other armies Corporals lead small troops of up to 6 men in the German army Privates of higher classes used to lead such troops. At the same time Germany had like 2 different "Sergeant"-ranks, while most other armies only had 1. Now SS-ranks are based on Wehrmachts-ranks and the rank "Sturmmann" has been associated with "Gefreiter". And "Gefreiter" equals "Private 4th class" (5th class today). According to NATO doctrin "Private 2nd class" (Stabsgefreiter) is associated with "Corporal". This causes confusion whenever German ranks are translated to English/American ranks in subtitles in basically every movie where German soldiers are shown. For example, Hitler has never been a Corporal or even a Sergeant, he was Private 4th class (5th class today). I have often heard about "Sergeant/Corporal Hitler" in WW1 from American sources. This is just not true, they simply don't understand our rank-system^^. I myself have been "Hauptgefreiter" (Private 3rd class) when I finished my time of duty. So even I had a higher rank than Hitler! :) CONCLUSION: ...that's why basically EVERY rank mentioned in the subtitles of this clip (of the soldiers who received the medals) is WRONG^^. They are all Privates, not Corporals.

@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE I'm glad I could make it understandable. I see, this seems to be a common problem, maybe worldwide; ofc. I only know about it from the view of my own nation. Well, German army is structured quite logical compared to some other armies, lets say the American forces for example. Since WW1 there are: 1. Heer (ground forces), 2. Marine (naval forces), 3. Luftwaffe (air forces), 4. Sanitätscorps (medical corps). Heer has the infantry, artillery, tanks, scouts, MP, paratroopers, mountain troops, specialforces, logistics, etc.; everything that walks, crawls or drives. Marine has everything that swims and Luftwaffe has everything which is able to fly^^ Medics mix up with the 3 other branches, they usually don't fight so they are not specialized at different weapon platforms and systems which makes them interchangable within the branches. Each branch has its own traditional ranks (with different names), the ranks are on a par with each other and interchangable. Every soldier has to learn 83 different names and symbols for 26 different ranks in total while in bootcamp, which is quite a pain in the ass^^ In WW2 two other, former paramilitary organisations have been implemented: SA and SS, both with their own artificial (fantasy-like) ranks. Both organisations have a complicated history and have had many internal changes, but that's too much stuff to explain in youtube's comment section. In short: SA (Sturmabteilung) has been assimilated by the Nazis when Hitler unified the ultra-right-wing parties prior to his grasp for power. The members mainly consisted of party-loyal veterans of WW1 in the beginning and simple party members later. Their importance within the 3rd Reich had been decreased over the years. Hitler gained total control over them by executing their highest leader Ernst Röhm in 1934. SS (Schutzstaffel) was something completely different. They started as Hitler's private bodyguards and turned into an ultra-loyal elite-club of fanatics. The members consisted mainly of academic, well educated and handpicked men in the beginning and everybody who passed their selection process later. Their importance had been increased over the years especially when they started supporting the regular army (Wehrmacht) in battles. They had many sub-groups for different tasks, like Totenkopf-SS, Waffen-SS, Leibstandarte A.Hitler, SS-Panzerdivision, etc., for internal and external affairs. Their highest leader has been Heinrich Himmler. While the SA could be seen as kind of simple guard for internal affairs (police support troops), the SS was something like Hitler's personal version of modern Samurai - loyal only to the Shogun (Hitler), highly indoctrinated, highly trained, with their own rituals, culture and even own kind of "religion". It was seen as a high honor to be member of SS and even the Wehrmacht recognized their success in battle. However, they were the most brutal, inhumane troops of them all and caused the most suffering against civilians and minorities. After WW2 SS and SA were declared as "terror organisations" and forbidden; the 4 regular branches remained.

@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE Ok. I don't want to sound like a "know-it-all", if I explain something to you you already have known before then this is not meant to be offensive. I still remember how they "taught" us the ranks^^. They gave us a list and two days to learn it. On the morning of second day they ordered us to visit the doc, but before we were allowed to enter the building they held up badges and 2 of us had to compete against each other in calling the rank of the shown badge. You had to have it right 2 times in a row otherwise you had to go back to the end of the line and do some push ups. It was like minus 20 degrees, we all wore tracksuits and were covered in sweat and some guys had to wait in front of the door for hours because they failed so many times^^. After about 4 days everybody had learned all ranks, nobody wanted to do push ups in the cold any more :)
@@zahgurim7838 That's another problem, but Berlin hanging at the edge of the war, German superiors didn't have time to consider about soldiers with heroic deeds in the past. They just wanted anyone who was still able to fight to keep on fighting till the end.
5:22 In real life Constanze Manziarly ended split up from Junge when they entered the Russian occupied portion of Berlin when she went to find some civilian clothes. The last time Junge saw Manziarly, she was being taken towards a U-Bahn subway tunnel by two Soviet soldiers, still in her Wehrmacht uniform, ostensibly to "see her papers". She was never seen or heard from since, and her body has never been found. The most obvious reasons why she disappeared are horrible and better left unsaid, but it's 99,9% certain she never left that tunnel alive. For all the grittiness of Der Untertang and the desire to stick to what happened, that the circumstances behind Manziarly's dissapearance were not even suggested left me a bit puzzled when I saw the movie. All they needed to do was to contrast Junge's fate with Manziarly's, showing her following two Soviet soldiers in good trust and reassuring Junge that she'll be allright, then hit the audience with the whammy by mentioning at the end that while Junge survived to tell her tale, Manziarly was never heard from again. That would have been enough to allude to her horrible fate with tact while respecting the events. Instead, they just show her giving up, which was not what happened at all. It was a weird editorial decision.

Great film. I love how she transformed from indoors private secretary to running through the dirt in soldier's uniform, almost flawlessly. She knew her survival depended on keeping up with the others.
Fun fact in the real breakout there was a working Tiger 2 that helped the bunker staff and soldiers break out to the bridge. The movie sets it accurately the first group successfully crosses the bridge and the second group including Martin borman and other high ranking officials were slaughtered by the Russians.

I think general Wilhelm Mohnke intentionally made his way to Russian troops instead of surrendering to western allies because he was afraid that he would be trialed and sentenced for his involvement in massacres of Canadian, American and British soldiers on western front. He committed no such act on eastern front so Mohnke was expecting better treatment from Russians which they did. Upon surrendering Mohnke and Dr Schenk were treated by banquet by Vasily Chauky and he was imprisoned in officers camp in volvo along with German Field marshalls and generals. He never faced and died in Damp in 2001.
@@danieltobin4498Maybe has something to do with his assignment. Mohnke never served in Eastern Front for long time, he was assigned on the Western Front most of the time, until the defense of Berlin. So most of his atrocities under his command occured in the Western Front.

@@tagedieb2204alright my friend iron crosses were incredibly common by late 1944. They were seen as a morale boost for both soldier and civilians. They were given out for simple tasks of defending a point and retreating in a organised fashion. There was a German saying “if you never got yourself at least 3 iron crosses you never fought in the war!”
cut out scenes are usually lower quality but the scene at 3:32 should have been left in, really powerful scene because it introduces the hopelesness of the bunker perfectly this cut scene shows the bunker was defended by a soldier who you cant even tell if he was in civilian clothes and volkssturm who gave up fighting
interestingly, all of the men being awarded are SS-Sturmmann which is equivalent to the Heer rank of Gefreiter which is then translated to Corporal. this is wrong however, as a Gefreiter was more so a senior private because his only reward was a higher pay

This is explained in JPO’Donnels book ‘…the Berlin Bunker…’ The guards at the gate were Berlin transport workers and claimed that the gate had to be closed due to regulations. Mohnke cursed himself for obeying during the 10 years he spent in Soviet captivity. I suppose it shows how deeply obeying rules was part of the third reich.
It has been said the last two Iron Cross medals were given to two French SS of the “Charlemagne” Division. They were the only Axis troops who broke through the Russian ring around Berlin.

One of them looks like he is SS. As well as anyone who was a fanatic of the Nazis likely still decided to just cope and believe an act of god could happen and they could fight off the Russians. There are always two parts of audience: The ones who are fully aware of the historical background, watching the movie with a differentiated approach. And then the others - well, like that guy I remember from cinema, after watching "James Ryan" in 1998 who complained about some of the German tanks having the wrong chassis.................... No matter how brillant a director might be - idiots will always see (or NOT see) what they want.
People need to remember that any and every film is a dramatic reconstruction and not an accurate documentary. Even in modern events of less import various witnesses will give conflicting accounts of precise events so to expect actual reality from a drama is hoping and believing too much.

I see lots of STG 44s (first assault rifle). They were an excellent rifle, but actually weren't very common. Hitler considered them unworthy of the German soldier. His subordinates went ahead and manufactured them on the down low.

I watched a new colourised doco, think it was World at War, covering the final 2 weeks of Berlin. These stats I remember....over 100,000 women raped by Russian infantry (some many times over and by groups) and 224,000 men and boys (from 10yrs) killed defending the city. (940,000+ Russians attacking). On average, that's one defender killed every minute 24/7. The Russians were finally ordered not to rape and the NKVD began executing their own men to enforce it.

what is the point of making up your own history? the majority of the city defenders were kids, volkssturm and random servicemen converted into ground troops(why you see different uniforms on almost all soldiers, especially famous for this are luftwaffe) almost every surviving army was pinned down in other battles which is why they couldnt support the city

The members mainly consisted of party-loyal veterans of WW1 in the beginning and simple party members later. Their importance within the 3rd Reich had been decreased over the years. Hitler gained total control over them by executing their highest leader Ernst Röhm in 1934.
SS (Schutzstaffel) was something completely different. They started as Hitler's private bodyguards and turned into an ultra-loyal elite-club of fanatics. The members consisted mainly of academic, well educated and handpicked men in the beginning and everybody who passed their selection process later. Their importance had been increased over the years especially when they started supporting the regular army (Wehrmacht) in battles. They had many sub-groups for different tasks, like Totenkopf-SS, Waffen-SS, Leibstandarte A.Hitler, SS-Panzerdivision, etc., for internal and external affairs. Their highest leader has been Heinrich Himmler.
While the SA could be seen as kind of simple guard for internal affairs (police support troops), the SS was something like Hitler's personal version of modern Samurai - loyal only to the Shogun (Hitler), highly indoctrinated, highly trained, with their own rituals, culture and even own kind of "religion".
It was seen as a high honor to be member of SS and even the Wehrmacht recognized their success in battle.
However, they were the most brutal, inhumane troops of them all and caused the most suffering against civilians and minorities.
After WW2 SS and SA were declared as "terror organisations" and forbidden; the 4 regular branches remained.

I still remember how they "taught" us the ranks^^. They gave us a list and two days to learn it. On the morning of second day they ordered us to visit the doc, but before we were allowed to enter the building they held up badges and 2 of us had to compete against each other in calling the rank of the shown badge.
You had to have it right 2 times in a row otherwise you had to go back to the end of the line and do some push ups.
It was like minus 20 degrees, we all wore tracksuits and were covered in sweat and some guys had to wait in front of the door for hours because they failed so many times^^.
After about 4 days everybody had learned all ranks, nobody wanted to do push ups in the cold any more :)

@@zahgurim7838 That's another problem, but Berlin hanging at the edge of the war, German superiors didn't have time to consider about soldiers with heroic deeds in the past. They just wanted anyone who was still able to fight to keep on fighting till the end.
5:22 In real life Constanze Manziarly ended split up from Junge when they entered the Russian occupied portion of Berlin when she went to find some civilian clothes. The last time Junge saw Manziarly, she was being taken towards a U-Bahn subway tunnel by two Soviet soldiers, still in her Wehrmacht uniform, ostensibly to "see her papers". She was never seen or heard from since, and her body has never been found. The most obvious reasons why she disappeared are horrible and better left unsaid, but it's 99,9% certain she never left that tunnel alive.
For all the grittiness of Der Untertang and the desire to stick to what happened, that the circumstances behind Manziarly's dissapearance were not even suggested left me a bit puzzled when I saw the movie. All they needed to do was to contrast Junge's fate with Manziarly's, showing her following two Soviet soldiers in good trust and reassuring Junge that she'll be allright, then hit the audience with the whammy by mentioning at the end that while Junge survived to tell her tale, Manziarly was never heard from again. That would have been enough to allude to her horrible fate with tact while respecting the events. Instead, they just show her giving up, which was not what happened at all. It was a weird editorial decision.

Fun fact in the real breakout there was a working Tiger 2 that helped the bunker staff and soldiers break out to the bridge. The movie sets it accurately the first group successfully crosses the bridge and the second group including Martin borman and other high ranking officials were slaughtered by the Russians.
Many Germans tried to escape Berlin and reach Western Front to surrender to the Americans, but some of them didn't make it.

I think general Wilhelm Mohnke intentionally made his way to Russian troops instead of surrendering to western allies because he was afraid that he would be trialed and sentenced for his involvement in massacres of Canadian, American and British soldiers on western front. He committed no such act on eastern front so Mohnke was expecting better treatment from Russians which they did. Upon surrendering Mohnke and Dr Schenk were treated by banquet by Vasily Chauky and he was imprisoned in officers camp in volvo along with German Field marshalls and generals. He never faced and died in Damp in 2001.
Whatever reason did he choose to surrender, he managed to save his life.
He executed Western prisoners but didn't do the same with Eastern ones? Usually it's the opposite, so that is rather odd

They were given out for simple tasks of defending a point and retreating in a organised fashion. There was a German saying “if you never got yourself at least 3 iron crosses you never fought in the war!”

interestingly, all of the men being awarded are SS-Sturmmann which is equivalent to the Heer rank of Gefreiter which is then translated to Corporal. this is wrong however, as a Gefreiter was more so a senior private because his only reward was a higher pay

This is explained in JPO’Donnels book ‘…the Berlin Bunker…’ The guards at the gate were Berlin transport workers and claimed that the gate had to be closed due to regulations. Mohnke cursed himself for obeying during the 10 years he spent in Soviet captivity. I suppose it shows how deeply obeying rules was part of the third reich.

I see lots of STG 44s (first assault rifle). They were an excellent rifle, but actually weren't very common. Hitler considered them unworthy of the German soldier. His subordinates went ahead and manufactured them on the down low.

I watched a new colourised doco, think it was World at War, covering the final 2 weeks of Berlin. These stats I remember....over 100,000 women raped by Russian infantry (some many times over and by groups) and 224,000 men and boys (from 10yrs) killed defending the city. (940,000+ Russians attacking). On average, that's one defender killed every minute 24/7. The Russians were finally ordered not to rape and the NKVD began executing their own men to enforce it.

This film deals with the issue of rape committed by the Soviets as a taboo subject. There is only a suggestive atmosphere, albeit subtly. Someone unfamiliar with history might think that the Soviet invasion of Germany, and Berlin in particular, did not involve any acts of violence against civilians, which is not true.
