The first reverse design on the second portrait 1887 sixpence is something you might be interested in. They had to revert to the earlier reverse design later that same year as it looked far too similar to a half sovereign when gold plated. As that was the first year for the 2nd portrait, it also meant that there ended up being 3 difference sixpences dated 1887!
Thank you for your comment that's really interesting. I just had a little search around and found some pictures of the 'withdrawn' type. I could see a gold one sliding through some traders hands, perhaps one that is less familiar or a little sleepy of a morning
They also had to darken Victorian old head, and George V farthings, to stop anyone trying to pass them of as halfsovereigns.
On BBC Flog it Programme today 10 gold sovereigns sold at auction for under £1700. That was roughly 170 for a gold sovereign. The experts valued them not much higher than this before the auction. The coins seemed to be all Victorian old head young head and some shield backs. The gold half sovereign valued and sold at no more than £100.
I have to say I was shocked how little they made. The expert said they were not special or rare coins so would be worth bullion weight. Even at that sold at less than bullion weight.
Just wondered what you think. That programme went out today 24 November 2023.
I wonder when it was recorded? maybe a 10norn15 year old repeat? 🤔
@@SovereignSaurus no it looked very recent. Deffo not more than 2 year ago at a push. I’d say within last year. Surely you couldn’t buy a gold sovereign for less than £200 ???
@@hetty43 It's a shame for the seller if that's the case, ignorance can be expensive though. On the other hand there is a value to a quick and hassle free transaction and to some people that can be higher than others
@@SovereignSaurus the last gold sovereign I bought was 1899. It cost me something like £390.
I’d hate to think I’d have to sell it some day for £170.
Do you think I paid a reasonable price at £390??? In uk. In a jewellers shop I’d done some business before and I trusted.
Yes £390 is ok at the present that is somewhere around 4-5% premium. Good work! @@hetty43
Great video as always, love this channel. I have no doubt you will get there in the end with the 1926. May I ask in your opinion what the best book to buy on sovereigns is.
I like the Marsh book 'the gold sovereign' for info and photos on the various types and mintages etc overall, if you're more interested in the history of the coin then 'chief coin of the world' might be a better fit
I planted rose number [36] in your garden. Don't forget to pay me a visit!
Thanks for visiting I'll take a look
I’m going to have to check the date and mint mark on my half sovereign
Yes I forget what it was but nothing stood out as alarming on your video
@@SovereignSaurus I checked, it’s a 1914 with no mint mark.
Great video, thanks for sharing 🙆♂️🙆♂️. So, you’re jumping down the half sovereign rabbit hole!!😜good luck 👌. Btw my scales only need to go up to 50 grams for my whole stack 🤣🤣🤣🤣. J
Haha very funny. I'm just picking up the George Vs when they come about I'm not chasing them all honest. The shields from Victoria would be a nightmare I think, or a money pit at best
I can never find half sovereigns in the US that are not expensive. The only coin of that size I own is an Iranian Pahlavi with a lion holding a sword (I wanted to try a smaller one out before investing more).
In addition, one can buy air tights that fit sovereigns. I have them in multiple sizes (Silver eagles, Silver Maples, old US silver half dollars, silver quarters, and most recently 19mm Mercury dime air tights). I have tubes for junk silver, but nice coins like like in air tights (especially numismatic silver).
Perhaps the half sovs are a little less common. Recently in the UK they've been holding a bit of premium it seems too
Which site(s) do you tend to buy your sovereigns from, as new sovereign stacker would appreciate to have your views, thank you.😊
It depends on dealer stock, the quantity per order and a few other factors but I check HGM, Atkinson's, Bullion By Post and Tavex mostly. Depending on your area you might have a local reputable dealer which could be an option too. Peer 2 peer on the 2nd hand market can be an option but initially I would stick with the bigger dealers to ensure you're buying genuine coins.
Thank you so much for your response, no local coin shops in my area of South Wales so will look at the suppliers you mentioned..brilliant videos😊😊😊
Love the video, your videos got me into buying 1/2 and full sovereigns. I don't have many yet but I intend to collect these from now on.
Cool! I hope they look after you and your family in the future
So now you have two 1925's - but they are both very nice. Great video and once again wonderful clean closeups. Way to go! Happy weekend to you! 🙂
Correct but still no 1926 which is what I was originally trying to buy 🤣
Hi there.
This scale is still available somewhere?
Thanks
It is yes I've put a link in the description to the one I bought from although there appears to be similar offerings from multiple sellers
Seen a website with a 1926, happy to DM if you wish.
Thanks Paul I'd take a look if possible yes. I've a channel email which is .. silversaurus@protonmail.com
Just sent you an email.
I've just checked but can't see it.... it's silversaurus at @ protonmail dot com @@paulburns2814
