it's crazy to me that out of all the anime I've seen so far, end of eva is one of the only ones to proficiently use film techniques throughout and it's like 25 years old or something? you don't have to like the story to appreciate how talented the people who made this movie are
@@handyherbcock4497 Satoshi Kon, Hayao Miyazaki, Mamoru Oshii, Isao Takahata, all of them studied film as a medium(informally or formally) and utilized advanced techniques.
Apollito, animation always uses cinematic techniques, they're just translated to the animated medium, so they are a little different and difficult to notice maybe. I reccomend Every Frame a Painting's videos about Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Hosoda to reflect about this (those videos are brilliant). As said in this video, in animated works nothing in the frame is random, ever, and everything has to be decided first. If anime didn't follow some movie rules they'd just appear as some amatourish thing. So: don't underestimate anime and animation! If you want to see some very cinematic anime authors I reccomend Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika) and Hosoda (Wolf chilidren) as said earlier, but also Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) , Takahata (Grave of the fireflies, Only yesterday, Princess Kaguya), Otomo (Akira), Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop) and obviously Miyazaki. I think all of these have nothing less then most of the famous Hollywood filmmakers.
pretty much all the late 80s/90s movie form anime did akira, ghost in a shell, satoshi kon films etc the 1999 hunter x hunter also had alot of beautiful animation and scene composition
I really loved the interesting camera angles in the original series, especially when there was lots of dialogue. It's something I rarely see in more modern anime which is a bit of a shame
I'm more just in awe of you recreating the title card shots so accurately. Yes, the video was a great little breakdown and highlight of the types of shots used in certain moments, but that recreation just really stood out.
This video was so great! I enjoyed it a lot. As someone who enjoys learning about cinematography and an old school fan of NGE and its saga I really enjoyed it. Whats more, I liked it so much, I ended up craving for more. Thanks a lot!
This video is criminally short! I love how informative your points were. If you ever do a deeper dive into the cinematography, I would be sure to watch it
@@NickTalksFilms theres just countless examples of perfected techniques, infinite inspiration, and mind blowing shots that showcase that, I could be here for a lifetime talking about it.
The pacing can be slower. Extending your videos to 6 minutes would be good enough to allow you to clearly explain your points better, whilst not having a long video. Visual indicators like arrows pointing to what your talking about can help a lot too.
as a film student and appreciator of animation, thank you for this. after revisiting evangelion in particular, i must say, there is not enough analysis and attention on the framing and shot compositions from this series.
@@NickTalksFilms Nick, if you're not disappointing me... you'd be disappointing me! 🤣🤣🤣 Please disappoint me with reckless abandon me: it's the only way anyone ever learns and builds on their talent. 🤣🤣🤣
wow really?? 321 views?? i actually thought i was watching a video with atleast over 200k views. you did a damn good job at this video. looking forward to your growth!
every so often I find another small analysis video on eva. some are hot garbage, some are repeating old analysis, but some add something small to this amazing and scaring movie.
Great video! Really needed this! I just recently picked up a camera and getting into filming making. I posted a video yesterday. Evangelion is my favorite anime! I am aspiring anime/film director.
I searched up how to pronounce it and that’s what the video said. I probably still pronounced it wrong tho. Here’s the video I watched: ruclips.net/video/TcK2ZToCyuA/видео.html
Evangelion changed the way I do my art, I don't know how to put it but it changed my thinking of how to make scenes, and it also made my art wayyyyyyy darker and I do more psychological monsters now, Also good job on the video! it should have way more views then 13k.
I really started off with Neon Genesis Evangelion, said i won't watch the rest.. Then watched End of Evangelion, said that's enough.. Then Death and Rebirth.. Then The Rebuild of Evangelion.. And am now reading the manga .w. I am not complaining about anything.. but damn Evangelion spoiled me bad
My favourite anime and also fav movie. With its cinematography, soundtrack, atmosphere, characters, symbolism it is masterpiece. I dont know if i will watch better thing in my life
Thanks! Basically how I did that was I got a video from Evangelion of just the flashes, and then I masked out frame by frame the shapes cut out in the original Evangelion title cards. Below was my own title card, so once the animation is over it would reveal the text. Once I did it once I could reuse it for however many titles I wanted. Hope this helps!
As someone who adores both live action film and animation I loved watching nge and this vid made me look forward even more to watching eoe. Great video!
Part 2 is out now:
The Analysis of Evangelion

There's not enough cinematic analysis on Evangelion. Thank you.

@@NickTalksFilms I think it was great, just a little short.
Next time I’ll make it longer!

Agreed!
The pacing is fast, but the analysis is solid. Good stuff.
Scorsese has used storyboarding for many of his films such as Taxi Driver.
Yeah a lot of the greatest filmmakers use storyboards for their films, but in animation you have to storyboard so they know what to animate.
I'm more just in awe of you recreating the title card shots so accurately. Yes, the video was a great little breakdown and highlight of the types of shots used in certain moments, but that recreation just really stood out.
