Vincente Minnelli I believe said the opening shots of the Christmas dance involved the outside wall of the ballroom constructed to pull back on rollers so, without an editing, the camera shot could move from the outside to the inside. The dance scenes were rehearsed and rehearsed and then done without having to constantly redo sequences. The entire film is a work of genius. ]
She was always Tremendously charming, lovely, Beautiful and gorgeous and talented beyond all reasons and words. I would have burn Hollywood to the grounds along with everyone who treated her bad.
The song at the opening is "Good Bye My Lady Love." Vincente Minnelli rehearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed this scene, and the scene with the phone call from New York City, like a ballet because he knew the timing had to absolutely just right and there could be no sense of it not being spontaneous. No one just says something; everything has strong facial expressions and strong body language. Judy's dancing with every terrible boy at the dance is as funny as her beau dancing in is both joyous and heartbreaking. Can you tell I am from St. Louis? And my dad was a motorman on the streetcar line which indeed ran behind the Smith house on Kensington Avenue. Everything in the film is historically correct; M-G-M made sure of that.
wow what a beautiful beautiful beauuuuuuutiful film indeed love the costume and the lovely scenery all around the settings all it just lovely again Judy and Lucille are really beautiful in this scene a long with yet another beautiful actress miss June Lockhart very very sweet and kind and a really wonderful actress she is too I simply love her in the lost in space series but in all this film is simply truly beauuuuuuutiful just beauuuuuuutiful peace everybody.
It is hard to think of anyone in Hollywood who started in the 1930s, worked constantly through the 1940s, who had a Washington press corp career in the 1950s, who worked in television in the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s, and into the 21st century, plus public relations press work at NASA, but there is June Lockhart, with glamour to spare.
I saw June Lockhart on an old Match Game from the '70s - and she came up with the spiciest, naughtiest answers of anybody on the panel. Funnier because, at least for me at the time, she had a goody-goody image.
Unfortunately, Joan Carroll passed away in 2016, at the age of 85. She received recognition in the "TCM Remembers" video for that year; they showed a very brief shot of her appearance in MMISL. You can find it here on RUclips. I would also love to hear if her niece has any memories of her, or any stories she may have told her.
I truly and utterly wish to God that Judy Garland was a trillion times way beyond Beautiful, fabulous, multi-talented ravishing, lovely, youthful, majestic, god-like, elegant, fancy, graceful, fair, pretty, breathtaking, ethereal, healthier, cleaner, flawless, magnificent, bewitching, drop dead gorgeous, divine, spotless, stunning, striking, splendorous, glamorous, brilliant, polished, radiant, fantastic, mesmerizing, sublime, exquisite, marvelous, better looking and special and grand and alluring and decent and Christ-like and perfect and Enchanting and erotic and divine and Desirable and irresistible and superb and exceptional and unrivaled and angelic and heavenly and pure than all the people and things of her time. And all who knew her and met her.
The wall of windows, at the opening of this scene, looks very much like the one used in filming " Holiday Inn"....wondering if it was the same set piece??
Wow!! Meet Me in St. Louis is pretty much my favorite movie of all time, so this is a big deal to me! haha. Now I realize you said she doesn't like people that much, do you think it'd be possible for me to write her for an autograph? That'd mean a lot! Just a crazy idea. :) haha
It's been eight years, but since no one's answered, the tune is called "Goodbye My Lady Love". You can find it on youtube. I only know this because I'm a fan of popular music from the early 20th century.
That'd be so cool! But really, if it's inconvenient at all for you, I don't want to bother you about it. It'd just be cool to get an autograph or something! :)
Yeah! Actually... I think she's my great grandma, cause I think she's my grandma mary's mom... I'm pretty sure. Lol I'd have to ask my dad :P You can see her on wikipedia, search Joan Carroll. She doesn't really like people :/ so I've never seen her before... :/
Rose and Esther thought Lucille was trying to steal Warren from Rose, so they filled out her dance card with the names of all the worst men there to get back at her. Then they found out she was actually very nice and didn't deserve that. The old man is Rose and Esther's grandfather, and he was trying to stop Esther from being unnecessarily mean. The next scene shows Esther dancing with all those guys she put on Lucille's card, and they're all awful dancers.
"The plans have been changed, Esther. The PLANS have been CHANGED." :'D love this movie
Judy's facial expressions is wonderful.... great actress!

Hahaha a the end Judy's just like "hello" after an awkward silence lol
Damn, Judy Garland was one of the most beautiful, talented, charming and funniest women of her time. Such a shame she was always being put down. :(
I know right. I hate what the world has done to her.

@@michaelmorris1804 I would have personally killed every asshole that put her down and ruined her life
This scene is so hilarious.
"Esther, dear...the plans...have changed."
Ms. Lockhart's character is so kind and gracious--like the actress herself--that NO WAY is she going to get Esther's dance card partners!

You can see Director Vincente Minnelli's genius in every scene. ...Rowby.
my great aunt was in this movie! her name is Joan Carroll, she was Agnes Smith. im not lying i swear.
Carbarrawr So cool!! Did she get to have any scenes with Judy? What were her memories of her and the movie?

The little girl who wanted a hunting knife? Cool!
@@VintageRose75 Joan Carroll was Agnes who was Judy Garland’s middle sister in the movie the Tween sister
Do you know anything about the auditioning process she went through to get the role?
Classic color movie , should be remasterd for Blu-Ray.
Does Esther’s dress remind you of Rose’s dinner dress in Titanic?
Seeing June this young also shows how much her daughter Anne looks exactly like her.
Rose and Esther remind me a bit of Jane and Lizzie from "Pride and Prejudice."
Yeah they do Rose reminds me of Jane and Esther reminds me of Lizzie.
Always thought she was gorgeous
Who's watching this on December 12,2020
One year later December 12, 2021.
Lockhart is so cute in this film. She is sorta like Olivia De Havilland in ''Gone With the Wind''.

She looked much better on LOST IN SPACE.
Who?
Young women and their little shenanigans! LOL.
Love the music at the start of this scene! Any idea of its name?
Yes. It's something like, "Goodbye, My Lady Love." :)
Does anyone know what song is being played at the opening of this scene?
It's called "Goodbye My Lady Love"
anyone know the name of the song at the beginning of the video?

i dont get it. why does the old man care about the card names?
