ZK Fairlane Pt3 - A Ford and a Holden Six

  • A confusing title I'm sure. This chapter is 85% Fairlane and the remaining looks at the (kind of unique) 202 we purchased for the EJ Holden. I was initially thinking about work on the XC, but I need to get it outside and we had a lot of rain, so we looked at this car instead. Where the Fairlane is concerned, most of the disassembly is behind us now, with only a few odd and ends left to attend to. Over the next video or so, we'll do a bit of welding here and there, then we slap it all back together (with care) haha. Hope you enjoy!

Great to see you working on these venerable I6's.. Solid motors with lots of low-end torque. Great motors!!
Glad things are going well with you, Peter.. Looking forward to more with those 6s.

If you have trouble finding a place to dump the LPG tank. I had one in an XE wagon I wrecked, it was half full. I adapted the copper pipe to an empty 9kg BBQ cylinder and decanted the liquid into it then burnt it off in my BBQ, took a good few hours. the remenants I slowly vented off into the middle of my yard on a windy day. Filled the empty tank with water and cut big holes in it so it was no longer considered a gas cylinder. then the scrappy took it with the wreck.
Another one I had from my XE sedan same as the 80L one you have I use as a reserve air tank with my compressor for air tools.

The valve on the right is the fill valve Peter and would only have gas in the full line. The valve on the left is the service valve that should not open without 12v applied. Tank could still have contents. If you power up service valve make sure no sparks (battery) nearby on connect or disconnect!

Fit the Webber card from the 4.1 ford engine to the 202 and do away with the Stromberg. Meant to be a nice upgrade, plenty of guys replace the Variajet on the Blue motors and say it’s a good thing. Cheers

The LC GTR Toranas came with the 161 ci or 2600 engine with cast iron headers, WW stromberg, mild cam etc, when I worked for a Holden Dealer in Perth the Last of the LC Toranas did get the 173 or 2850 engines with the WW strombergs etc but that was only because GM Holden ran out of 161’s near the transition to the LJ’s and that’s why the HG Holdens also got 202’s in the last of them too, when the LJ GTR came out they just got the bog stick 202’sin them, as an aside the Holden reds also came out in 138 ci the same as the later grey engines as in the basic “2250” six in the LC and LJ Toranas

    • @jamesgovett3225

Also the Red engines were basically a US Chevrolet design as they are near identical apart from ancillaries and if you look at the Chevy 2 or Nova sixes of 194ci they’re a near exact copy, I remember we had an Australian delivered Chevy 2 at a Dealer I worked for and their 194 ci sixes was the same as if you lifted the hood on an EH Holden ( yes they did sell them new here from 1963) the EH turned out to be so popular that in a short time Holden didn’t offer the Chevy 2 as they were too expensive compared to the EH

    Hi Peter.
The gas tank has gas in it still by the gas gauge. On the filler tube that you removed theirs an non return valve on the tank under the four bolts/ screws. You can crack them open to let the gas out but it will take ages and the smell will be bad. You might have to use your engine hoist to lift out that tank. It will weigh a ton.
That gas filter and shut off valve on the chassis next to the left side on the transmission, can I grab it off you for my XF ute? I am converting it to run on gas cos the motor pings on 98 petrol and gas is a higher octane.
    PM me. Thanks.
Ps I have a ZL with a 302C with a C4 and the tail shaft from the STD car goes straight in.
The only way I can run a Cleveland in my ZL is to run on gas only and i don't have to run cats.

Hi Pete, Been a while since I commented but watched every vid as usual! 😂 Great to see the ZK getting a proper donk, will. Be mint (get it) when she’s done! XC front looks amazing complete!!!! I have another XD 351- FMX was running before tear down, now cranks won’t start, no spark from brand new dizzy or old one either, spark at coil?? Just need some advice mate or a good old school ford auto elec to diagnose even? Cheers mate, keep up. The great vids!! 👍👌👍👌🏆🏆

    • @PeterAndersons

Hello mate, thanks for the comments! Couple of things... check for power at the coil. If the wiring to the coil is stock it should read 7V with ignition on and up to 12V while cranking. Most aftermarket distributors use 12V, so if the resistor wire is still fitted within the stock loom it won't work. Also, if you changed the coil for a 12V one, it won't be much good with the resistor wire in situ.

I'm not a mechanic so I wouldn't dare argue with you on your disdain for LPG. Though a classic car should never have LPG.
That said, the ZK wasn't "classic" when the gas was installed. In any case, I've had my 380 on dual fuel for many years because the damn thing sucks petrol like a demon and I've saved a fortune with the amount of mileage I do.
I remember on the fuel consumption sticker on the windscreen when new said 8.9 litres, yeah right, more like 13-14 per 100 no matter how smoothly I tried to drive it.
So it had to go duel fuel. Anyway, just my two cents.
