Zappa delivers more intelligent coherency in one sentence than the opposing 3-man crew in their whole talk. This "interview" must be what the inquisition looked like.
To be fair, the host does keep it away from personal as best as he can. And he does ask some questions that are otherwise left hanging. But Zappa lets the frothing guy make assumptions about him (I agree with you Mr. Zappa, that our Families need to be protected). Zappa just uses that as fuel later.
aren't you both frightened and appalled that American society has advanced so little in all these years. You still have these right wing religious fuckwits controlling a large proportion of your populous with their bigotry. I love your country but I find it amazing that whilst it is the most advanced country in many ways it's people are mostly poorly educated and susceptible to the most backward and idiotic ramblings of right wing religious morons and crooks. Even Trump had to at least pretend to be religious in order to be elected. The entire world saw and see trump for what he is and yet a large proportion of Americans were conned by such an obvious orange conman.
Correct. I'm not a Zappa fan, but watching this programme gives me a rather positive impression of that guy. But a bunch of baffoons these other guys are... Who the heck invited them on TV??
+robert glenn I'm sorry but these two elderly gents on the left and the right seemed alright to me(at least in this debate). That Lofton guy was the only bigot. And his is a very insecure nature. Its not "society" he's worried about, its the fact that society wouldn't be the way he wants it to be that irks him, and that's your quintessential right winger :)
The show is presented to give the impression of two extremes, but there's nothing extreme about anything Zappa says here. He could be extreme in his views, like the stuff about LSD being a Government weapon against the 'counter culture' (not necessarily untrue but certainly extreme). Lofton comes across as an anti intellectual and pretty desperate once he quickly realises he hasn't done his homework regarding Frank's intellect. If I was on Lofton's side, I'd be pretty annoyed with his useless shouty comments. The guy couldn't debate his way out of a paper bag. Laughable.
Love that one of the points John makes is that Hitler used words, and words can be dangerous. Hitler also was a huge fan of censorship. Eventually newspapers, radio and all forms of media were put under the control of the Nazis. It always starts with censorship.
The only CD my dad gave me when I was 8 years old was a Frank Zappa record. It took me probably 10-15 years to realize the truth of zappa and his exceptional musicianship.
In hindsight, I'm glad the only real result of all this was a little stamp that suggests parental advisory. Also, I'm glad that we got a chance to see the articulate Mr. Zappa school some morally objected moron with knowledge.
That is pretty much what everyone thought when they decided to debate him on TV. They had no idea what they were in for. Even Dee Snider from Twisted Sister kind of shocked everyone for being so articulate at the hearings. They pretty much thought everyone making this kind of music were ignorant savages.
An interesting reminder of the small or even closed, mindedness of some people in I presume, the early 70's. Let's not have an even spread of opposing opinions. Lets have one guy who's opinion we all strongly disagree with, then surround him and berate him incessantly. No wonder this show was called crossfire. That was literally what was happening. Good on you Frank.
Oops the time machine went to far... let me reset it to the mid 80's for you. :) Interesting how TV hasn't changed much eh? Except we no longer have Frank... such a bummer.
Hi Jack, I must admit you impress me here! I did'nt expected to come accros this amount of "absurdity" - (i have some more satisfying words in mind but hey.. I don't want to be banned from youtube)! - in my life.. Anyways, this is somehow educative. ;) Good luck my man! feel free to wright back, I can't wait to see what you'll come with this time! Pretty entertaining!!
Yes America does hide sex, it's restrictive towards sex. A lot people bought Zappa albums, but he didn't use the money to buy yachts or stick it up his nose, he kept on working right up to his untimely, premature end. Most people didn't know anything about him and his music. They preferred 'audile wallpaper'. Zappa himself was controversial from day one. He was the most rational and down to earth person we've ever known.
How was he so brave and sure of himself when his position was such a minority view at the time. That kind of fearless conviction is rare. He was the kind of guy that was so intelligent that he sounded like a fool to most because they couldn't understand him.
Notice how he doesn't interrupt, but they wouldn't even let him get half a sentence out without stepping all over his shit. Good on him for not losing it, but stepping up with " wait a minute" so he can actually finish a complete fucking thought!
Blaming Rock music for a degradation of society is scapegoating. Degradation starts with the individual and then on how that person is influenced by his immediate experiences. I love Black Sabbath, Mega Death, Rob Zombie and the likes. I have always loved life and focus on its beauty and tolerate its shortcomings. My morality is based on doing unto others as I would hope they would do unto me. The only thing that has ever made my blood boil is people and systems of power and authority that ignore blatant injustices and exploit those who are without a say.
But as you probably noticed, Mr. Zappa rarely looked to his right, avoiding eye contact with Mr. Lofton, probably intentionally, knowing that this might incite the hair trigger temperament of Lofton (most likely) causing Mr. Lofton to shoot from the hip and embarrass himself
When your arguments fail, resort to hyperbole: Frank Zappa as Hitler? "Hot for Teacher" the gateway to the collapse of society? Wow! That guy had an agenda so heavily biased by the right wing that it turns my stomach. I admire Mr. Zappa's restraint and ability to stay focused on what was been discussed and not resort to violence -which I felt myself leaning to by listening to that clown Lofton-. Mr Zappa is an example of defending one's rights in an eloquent, dignified and elegant, even, manner
The seats are cramped together and Lofton shoves his hand in his face several times. Zappa holds his ground and sells the idea that we can change government. Lofton should have been given a time out when he made it personal in part one when he knew he was losing.
This was like a battle of the brains and Frank was the only one with a weapon. I still want to know what kind of animal was murdered for the fur piece for John Lofton ?
When you try to reason with close minded people, i'm not saying you shouldn't...if you have that fighting spirit go for it, but in the end it's just the close minded getting "outraged" at simple things said they talking over you and interupting you, alot of the times for the last word.
I was never really a fan of Frank's music but, as with so called "classical music", the more I try to understand it, - the more I listen to it, the more I read about Frank and his music, the more I listen to frank himself and try to get to know the "man" - the more I appreciate the music & the more I get out of the music.Regardless of his limited education frank was obviously a very intelligent and eloquent man. Amazing to think that right wing religious bigots are still making the same stupid points all these years later. Love how when frank makes an intelligent point he's told he's been talking too much.Even though I am still trying to get to grips with Frank's music I had the pleasure a few years ago of hearing his son Dweezil and a kind of all star band including a lot of previous associates of frank perform Frank's music. Seeing the talentless offspring of successful parents try to make money off their parents fame is not my idea of a good night out however this Dweezil chap defied all my expectations. He seems decent and well grounded and his love of his fathers music really shone through. Even though I'm not much of a musician I could appreciate how difficult Zappas music can be and his son proved himself a very talented guitarist. I had come across another of Frank's sons a number of years ago when I lived in America and, whilst I was only in his company very briefly, it was long enough for me to decide that he was an arrogant, annoying, spoiled, entitled dick who's annoying display of uber confidence was the result of having a famous parent and nothing more. Nice to think that that kid was just a complete fuckwitted fuckwit on his own. Can't blame frank for him when he also had a son, (I presume he had a fairly equal influence on both their lives), who seems to be a very decent and is definitely a very talented and hardworking man.
That second hand smoking bullshit is more of a reevaluation of our rights with respect to each other than the stripping of personal freedom. They say that one person's right to breathe clean air is more important than the other person's right to smoke; if you consider those two rights equal in proportion, then there is no net less in freedom. It's flawed, but a more compelling argument than you think.
Frank Zappa OWNED these idiots. How I wish he was here to continue be a leader - simply a leader in what he believed in - agree or disagree, this guy stood up for his beliefs
It's amazing just amazing Lofton anti-free speech stance. Novak says "im a first amendment man" & he says "censorship should come from the industry" totally refuting Lofton.
Zappa delivers more intelligent coherency in one sentence than the opposing 3-man crew in their whole talk.

Lofton (to Zappa): "You're not smiling, you don't look too happy"
Zappa: "Why should I smile when I'm sitting next to you"
Priceless!😆🤘
😁😎👍
I am glad to see and hear and remember that people were just as ignorant and contentious 25 years ago as they are today.
aren't you both frightened and appalled that American society has advanced so little in all these years. Nobody's fool: The threats to freedom in 2018, and freedom of speech in particular, are not coming from the right but from the left.
@@aramfingal5180 Your comment aged extraordinarily well.
@@legalize.brokkoli and continues to.
The only intelligent comments were made by Frank. I wish he were here today. His insight would be enlightening.
Shame he didn't go through with running for president. Imagine how amazing and progressive he could've made our country.
Zappa was the only man on that panel with any degree of intelligence. He owned this herd of idiots from the opening comments.
Correct. I'm not a Zappa fan, but watching this programme gives me a rather positive impression of that guy. But a bunch of baffoons these other guys are... Who the heck invited them on TV??
Oh, Fraulein Menke...check out some of Frank's live gigs. His guitar work is spellbinding.
Fräulein Menke
The same faceless media corporations who invite cretins like Hannity and O'Reilly et al to spew their idiocy on TV.
THIS!
Mr. Zappa was the one eyed man in the land of the blind.
+robert glenn I'm sorry but these two elderly gents on the left and the right seemed alright to me(at least in this debate). That Lofton guy was the only bigot. WATCHING FRANK SCHOOL THESE FOOLS IS LIKE WATCHING SOMEONE FROM THE FUTURE TALKING TO CAVEMEN...LMAO
wow, frank is so tolerant of these jerks, and so eloquent
"Mr. Zappa did not suffer fools gladly.
Such a cool cat Frank was. Putting up with these clowns and not losing his shit. Tip of the the hat to you Mr. Zappa, you're sorely missed.
Frank Zappa, RIP.
True legend.
Wait - Frank is the only one wearing brown shoes.

FZ was way to intelligent for these clowns.
Wow... Frank Zappa discussing about a Van Halen clip. They seem so far appart, its amusing to know Zappa enjoyed Van Halen.
Zappa destroys all.
"Well why should I smile when I'm sitting here with you."
That moment when Godwin's Law pops up in a debate, always cracks me up.
I wonder if these people jumping all over Frank changed their minds now. Frank predictedit and look where we are now.
It would have been interesting to see Frank and Jimmy Swaggart on a show debating each other!
why should I smile when im sitting here with you? brilliant. I got ton hear that again.lol
The only CD my dad gave me when I was 8 years old was a Frank Zappa record. It took me probably 10-15 years to realize the truth of zappa and his exceptional musicianship.
Don't 4get ya dad

"Why would I smile, I'm sitting next to you?" 😂 So good

Frank is making a face that says " why the fuck am I here on this show"
Gotta give Zappa some credit for staying so calm... I would have been furious :D
This is GOLD
glad to see John loftons wiki page is only there because of this interview with Frank Zappa
John Lofton is making a fool of himself.
Wow! I didn't know that Frank Zappa was so well spoken. Inceredible! He was definitely the most intelligent in the panel. Laughable.

Bollocks usa is sex its culture pop music is sex its disgusting
Frank surrounded by eccentric weirdos.
How was he so brave and sure of himself when his position was such a minority view at the time.
That kind of fearless conviction is rare. He was the kind of guy that was so intelligent that he sounded like a fool to most because they couldn't understand him.
The definition of irony could be that of Lofton calling Zappa an idiot.
Frank Zappa is so badass!
Notice how they all try desperately to keep him from talking.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Notice how he doesn't interrupt, but they wouldn't even let him get half a sentence out without stepping all over his shit. Good on him for not losing it, but stepping up with " wait a minute" so he can actually finish a complete fucking thought!
I like the first part when Frank had enough and told the one dude to kiss his ass.
Audio has been killed to this and many other videos I try to view. Anyone else find this happening to them?
how big of an a-hole was John Lofton? RIP Frank Zappa!
Zappa is so well spoken I love him
So crazy to think I am “those children” they are all worried about.
6:48 "Good grief!"
HAHAHHAHAHA
Zappa...my man!...
Read his autobiography; it's a riot!
YES
Godwin's law at work here. Well done Mr Lofton, well done.
John Lofton was a Moonie. His newspaper is owned by the Moonie church.
One of them spoke with reason.
i know music i listen from steve vai to bach,, but if you like beatles i respect , thats just my personal opinion .
Best part of this interview.....8:43.....(to John Lofton): "JOHN....John, thats enough !" ;)
Damn! We lost a smart advocate when we lost him .... Support the Zappa Trust! Buy his records.

Did they have tv in America during the 17th century?!?
Well now look at us good grief 2019. Frank Zappa very logical man wish he was here today .

The history of music?? You have a PhD. in Music History I assume. What songs or musical style were you listening to in 1962 and 1963?
Frank Zappa, such a legend..
04:56 franks face is like ..fuck off

He still rocks!!!
Frank has it right - fear of words.

Why is zappas hair like that??
Frank looks so pissed at 2:00 too 2:13
That was the worst possible note to end the debate...
So many comments seem to be in response to a jack Rhodes - yet no comments from mr Rhodes.
Twas ever thus.
John Lofton's career killer.
Lyrics ...Obscenity....Trumps Hand picked Oligarchs for cabinet ...that's Obscenity !

see, the funny thing is no one will ever remember john lofton for anything other being the guy zappa mopped the floor with on national tv
Frank getting down and dirty with the animals!
"moving towards a fascist theocracy" That was actually chilling. And prescient.
Please tell me John Lofton died of a heart attack while listening to a Zappa album
John Lofton is a scared little man
an example of godwin's law at 5:00

like watching something from the 1950s
"kids that don't know the meaning of life", and lofton does? haha
Why are you telling me these things?
Ripped'em a new one!
