OMG your'e soooo lucky you found the problem before you set sail again. I hope the boat manufacturer will provide new ones at no charge. Good luck and keep us posted!
I recall many a night under those same sky's you guys are under now.. yes reflection is very good for the mind and body! Be safe and keep sailing Joy crew!👍👍
Yikes glad you found the issue with the batteries, Ed! Glad you got it fixed pronto! Keep safe and eyes and ears open! Like you said use your senses to listen to you boat always!👍👍
Another great video from Joy. The temperature here in Oslo is 4C and the snow has started to melt, but April can still surprise us with snowfall. Then it's nice to get some warmth from watching videos from Joy. Many thanks to Patricia and Ed for taking the time to entertain us cold northerners.
Oh thank you so much for leaving us a note here. We cannot even begin to tell you how much we appreciate it. Stay warm all right ? Best Patricia and Ed
That sounds like a very scary thing to find the batteries getting hot. Very good you discovered the problem before it became a real problem. Glad everything is going to be alright with Joy and you both. Would think being only a year old the manufacture would have to replace them. Not sure on a warranty on those kinds things though. Outstanding editing skills Ed and music was so calm and relaxing and fit right in the video perfectly. Extremely fun to watch Patricia stare out in the sea off the back at of the boat at sunset she looks so relaxed. Thanks again boomer
Thanks Boomer! Yes it was convered under warranty which was good ! unfortunatelly it took a long time to get here so we had to take action in order not to be grounded for 3 months. best Ed
Hi! Your batteries are lithium? Did the technician showed a direction of what might've caused the problem? Except for the smell there was no other indication of a malfunction? Glad everything's fine and the problem happened when you were docked, not in the middle of the passage! My best! See you on Montenegro next week! Fair winds!
Hi Jose Eduardo. We have AGM batteraries on JOY. It was an manufacture issue in one of the batteries that caused it. Unfortunatelly there was no alarms or anything to let us know something was wrong. All good now after replacing the entire battery bank. best Ed
@@SailingJoy Hi Ed! You can call me Zé. Nice to know. Have you considered lithium - although they're quite expense and require some planning on replacement. My best!
Hey guys, awesome episode. Love how informative you are🤘🏻... love seeing a sailing channel that actually shows them sailing. I know that smell of a battery going bad, it smells like rotten eggs😅. ❤ from Adrian in Cape Town South Africa 🇿🇦
I had a similar situation with my house batteries. I could not touch them. 1 of the Batteries died and took down the other 5 as well even though I disconnected it. I unfortunately had to change all 6 with the same kind you have because I was in a small town and this is what was available.
Omg that is so scary to find the batteries so hot. Would love to know if there was any risk of that battery model catching fire. You said they are designed to crack rather than explode, but could it still start a fire? Great videos. Love the content. Inspired for my retirement to do the same. ❤
I was told they crack and would not catch on fire. At least is what I hope. Now that I had gone thru this I constantly check battery temperatures as it is a good indicator something is wrong.
Lead acid can burn because if you charge it with too much voltage you‘re creating hydrogen and oxygen - which is a rather bad combination. This is mainly caused by charging voltages exceeding 14.4V for a longer period of time. Sometimes the internal resistance of the battery has increased to a point where enormous amounts of heat are generated. In your case it seems to have been more of a heat and less of an electrolysis problem. I‘m eagerly waiting for the next episode because I‘m curious how the malfunction of one battery should have killed an entire bank… 🤨
JOY, you are the most beautiful sailing life record I have ever seen. It is the story that I am most willing to recommend to others.
Wow, thank you! So happy to hear ! Trying our best here 🤩🙏🌟

Hi Ze ! We wanted to go with lithium and it will be our option on a future boat as it does require lots of changes.

Yes same here Anwar! The town were we were had only one type of battery and warranty would take a long time so I had to buy what they had. Oh well.
Good anchor = good sleep. Just tell the other boats 😂😂😂
HAHAHA I will make a banner witht that saying and write on the side of my hull.
Scary stuff... I'm happy you two are safe. I hope the battery manufacturer honors the warranty.
Hi Carson. Yes they did. We got a new battery bank under warranty. 🙏
very nice video! :)
Thank you so much
Love the video, roughly when was it recorded?
Thank you ! Right before the winter.
Have you had someone check your bulkheads and do you know if this is a known problem on the 52?
Hi Michael. Yes we had our bulkheads checked. All good 👍 and reinforced. I have not heard anything regarding issues on bulkheads on the 52s.

Faulty Lagoon battery
Defective battery
Parley Rival is a good channel to ask bulkhead questions.
Thanks Dennis.
