The Pats ran Man coverage all season, but played zone (mostly quarters coverage) against the Rams. This undermined all of the preparation the Rams made w/ their passing game. Even in an interview w/ Kevin Clark before the game, McVay said he expects the Pats to "run a lot of man coverage." For the run game, the Pats put 5-6 guys on the line and told them all to go vertical, rather than chasing all the fakes & play-action stuff. This along with 1 really athletic Mike-LB pretty much shut down the Rams zone-running concepts.

It's clear that Gurley got injured early in the playoffs, and the rams didnt want teams to know so they still had to game plan for him.
