  • That which dispels pain is more real than pain. But what's capable of dispelling pain?
Applications for Ralston College's MA in the Humanities for 2023 are now open. Dr. Peterson does not teach at Ralston. www.ralston.ac...
Ralston College presents the inaugural lecture of its Chancellor, Dr Jordan B Peterson, delivered at one of the most iconic sites of the ancient world, the Library of Celsus in Ephesus. This ancient city was the birthplace of Heraclitus, the philosopher who first articulated the idea of the Logos, and the final resting place of St. John, who uses that same Greek word to name the Divine Word. In his lecture, Dr Peterson argues that the intelligibility of the world depends on the patterned regularities that are superordinate to our immediate perception; this underlying order - which, from the Greeks onward, we have called Logos - is both the horizon that enables human perception and the basis for the possibilities that we realize in the world. Such an account of our intrinsic, rational, and self-determining capacity constitutes a challenge to the assumptions of many prevailing schools of thought - such as behaviorism, rigid empiricism, and postmodernism - and lays the burden of personal ethics, and the formation of a good society, squarely on the shoulders of the individual.

My experience with pain actually left me feeling relieved. I had postpartum depression after my 2 nd child. I knew something was wrong but I didn’t know what it was. I went out one afternoon by myself to a local Mall. I decided to get my ears pierced. Afterwards my ears were throbbing. I realized that feeling pain was a step up from feeling nothing. I didn’t feel depressed, I just felt nothing until that moment of pain. Then I knew what was wrong and was able to address it. Later, I developed chronic autoimmune disorders and am in a great deal of pain. I saw someone below wrote that pain always leaves people bitter. My doctor just commented to me recently that most of his other patients are so bitter, but he’s known me for 12 years, and despite everything I’ve been through, not once have I ever become bitter.

I think that, regarding pain, Peterson's point is that pain is not sure to destroy us, because there are some forces that are even more fundamental or powerful than pain, that, if you are equipped with, you can "defeat" pain, in some sense. Jordan doesn't list those forces here but he does in other lectures and podcasts, for example his podcast with Lex Fridman. There he mentions that love is more powerful than pain. If you are filled with love, you can manage the pain of existence. That's his hypothesis. I presume that it could be love for people or for an activity or thing such as art, engineering, walking on the beach, music, anything. What is love, you ask? Well, good question. But what is pain? These are fundamental realities that you can only be understood when you are experiencing them. Yes, there are correlations with chemical reactions in the physical body when these experiences happen, but if you are thinking on the same level as JP is here you would know that it would be shallow thinking to suggest that scientific facts like those makes any difference whatsoever when it comes to these discussions about the very fundamental building blocks of reality. Science is a model that simplifies reality for pragmatic purposes. Reality is simply Reality.

As does Joy. When we experience joy, when it ends we crave it's repetition. That also leads down dark paths of addiction and blind attachment such that we ignore everything else in its pursuit.
Pain yields rejection, Joy yields pursuit. Both are attachments, and both are the same problem, insofar as the attachment IS the problem.

I am suffering with an undiagnosed condition that may be Rheumatoid Arthiritis with a lot of other things thrown in, or some kind of auto-immune disease, and pain becomes more and more frequent, sometimes during episodes, for every second of every day. I want to see purpose in this, but I'm afraid I don't. I can't sleep at night, my circulation is destroyed, my joints, my back, all hurt so much and that is just the start of it. My partner of several years recently told me she wants to not see me for 3 months to "reset" as my constant complaining and my inability to enjoy things when I'm in pain has wore her down. I went from working, to studying Psychology inspired by Jordan, because I wanted to help people, to dropping out, to living back at my parents house on my own for a year. The past few years have been a catastrophe for me. I have tried to figure out what is wrong with me, and to seek treatment and to take responsibility for all of that, but ultimately, I have been unable to bring myself to find a job or improve my situation at all, for the past year. I no longer have any idea what I am doing. I don't know what purpose is in any of this, I don't understand how things could get better, I don't know what to do to improve things. I am trapped in this hell. Thoughts of self destruction are calming to me, and I can't help but feel resentful. I don't know what to do.

"Fear God and obey His commands, for that is the whole of man."
Adam was not made for the world, but the world was made for Adam. Nothing in all creation will make you whole, so the loss of all of creation cannot take from you what you were made for and keep you incomplete; "He is risen." Being lost is simply the need for Christ. Knowing him is life and he is who you were created for. Without him, without love, nothing can matter.
"These three things will remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love."
"Love is not self seeking." The reason there can be evil, pain, loss, grief, trouble, things you don't want, and still good, is because love is greater than life. Two questions: "What good is having love and nothing else?" "What good is having everything without love?"
Only created things are reduced to nothing; love stands by itself. "They refused to love the truth and so be saved." This is the test all life. Our inability to accept a reality that we don't want, that which is apart from ourselves, comes back to our ability to love ourselves. The truth is that our friends, lovers, family, the random people and circumstances we find ourselves in are all things we did not create and must find ourselves either able to love (act righteously in) or not.
That being said, you know that your life is a power for good. You know that people matter and that what you do will make a difference in the time that you have. The choice is whether you're willing to love that much.
You can be like Cain and try to destroy the reality that causes you pain, murdering your brothers and sisters, for some respite to the conviction that it is your heart that needs to change. Or, like Jesus, conquer death and save the world around you by obeying God and entrusting it into His hands, your life, a living sacrifice, to honor God, which is exactly the choice that Abel represents.
Yes. You will die. And, you may even be murdered by your fellow brothers who are unworthy of you, but God cannot be mocked and you will real what you sow. Peace is found in righteousness. "There is no peace for the wicked."

@epictetus7910 I have had RA and Fybromyalgia as well as injuries from a car crash for over 30 years. Yes, the depression is worse than the awful pain. Depression is caused by 1) being in continuous pain , 2) being unable to do the things you used to do: unable to work, unable to clean your house, unable to go for a walk, unable to do shopping etc. But also 3) inflammation in your brain itself❗️
The most important thing is to do whatever you can to lower the inflammation.
Now the good news ( at least for me it has been) I began painting 15 years ago. And when I am in ‘the zone’ painting 💥I feel no pain💥. I also have no conception of time or my surroundings while I am painting. I play Beethoven loud and paint.
It may be something else for you. But my point is that no amount of medicines can take my pain away, but there is something that does. So don’t give up hope. Find something engrossing- wood carving, gardening, something creative seems to work best. You lose yourself and with that you lose the pain.

Most of my vertebrae above my bellybutton are now "floating"and often lead to pinched nerves and various states of function in my internal organs. My heart will beat normal rate, but at half power. I go to sleep. My intestines and kidneys turn on and off randomly. The pain is magnified due to a state of hypersensitivity caused by the original pain, but an overall tolerance is built up based on a constant of the average.
On top of that, I currently have a pinched nerve causing my entire right arm to burn (like extremely tired) and it's in constant flux of intensity, and that's much more difficult to deal with than a steady pain.

In my sense, it is breathing that is fundamentally real. Breathing as a verb, as a process of continuous expression of being alive. I do not mean an unconscious automatic activity that takes place in a human being. Rather, completely and totally matching every split second of every breath with your whole awareness, fully becoming each breath. Breathing with full realization of the meaning of that space right after you've exhaled till the end and right before another breath comes in. That which is unborn which has never died. If one can maintain his or her awareness in this way the fundamental reality has a chance to reveal itself. Pain then becomes an irrelevant concept. I'm saying this as someone who has had chronic pain for the past 25 years. I'm also saying it as someone who has practiced embodying the realization described above with discipline and commitment for 10 years in a monastery in Japan. Once arrived, no hardship or pain can take away the great joy. So it is not only about what people do but also how they do it, what state of mind and being they are in when they act. @Lori r During the first 25 seconds he describes what is known as the difference between positivism and phenomenology: Real, palpable world vs the meaning that you give to reality: matter vs. what matters. After that, he says that he always thought that there wasn't most fundamental reality than pain, but after years of reflection he arrived to the conclusion that "what dispels pain is more real than pain" (not that I agree, but that is what JP said). From that point on, as I have pointed out in other comment, he confers the same meaning to pain and suffering (wrongly IMO), and expresses that education should be dedicated to prepare people to face pain and "still move forward with what is good in mind". After the 4:43 mark we get a rhetorical exercise on why his assertions are on point.

U put two cups on the table one is room temperature and one is filled with boiling water, which one is more real?
Its all real, we just avoid getting hurt cuzz it sucks and we get mad when people we care about get hurt, it doesn't mean pain is more real than whatever, its just something we really really really really don't like.
Time isn't real cold isn't real, but in the human mind it is real, what does a stone see as real, it cant but it is a real physical object, feelings are only something your brain makes you feel, you can chose what to feel when it comes to emotion, you can make some things fell better or not fell good at all, but cutting out pain is very hard, but not impossible.
your brain is responsible for what you feel, how else can you feel things in your dreams, everything you experience is made by your brain, are you your brain? or is the brain just a transferring this to you, the brain is like a computer, your own little playground.
What do you have that cannot be taken away from you? only you.

Your comment is a bit out of context so I'm not sure if I understand what you mean here. But just in case, Peterson's point is that pain will not necessarily produce hatred and all those things, because, there are some forces that are even more fundamental than pain, that, if you are equipped with, you can "defeat" pain, in some sense. Well, good question, but, what is pain? These are fundamental realities that you will understand when you are experiencing them. Yes, there are correlations with chemical reactions in the physical body when these experiences happen, but if you are thinking on the same level as JP is here you would know that it is shallow thinking to suggest that that scientific fact makes any difference whatsoever.

I think FEAR causes hate. When people don’t understand something, or don’t know if an outcome will be good or bad they fear it. Constant inflicted fear causes pain and suffering. If a political leader (or a boss or coworker or friend or family member) does this to people it rapes their souls and demoralizes them. That is what make us bitter and hateful.
