  • There are very few filmmakers who have as much experience with massive science-fiction as Gareth Edwards, who we recently interviewed through our partnership with AMC Theatres, where tickets for the movie are on sale. After getting his start on the lower-budget, 2010 creature feature "Monsters," Edwards graduated to Hollywood storytelling with the 2014 resuscitation of "Godzilla." And that film ended up being so impressive, Lucasfilm came calling with an offer to tackle a Star Wars film. The end result, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," still is considered by many Star Wars fans to be one of the finest movies made in the post-prequel era. Sci-fi fans couldn’t wait to see what he did next. But the wait ended up taking longer than expected.
Gareth Edwards follows up "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" with The Creator (in theaters September 29), and the film already is generating raves worthy of a Star Wars successor. The film tackles the complicated topic of Artificial Intelligence and finds John David Washington tracking the development of a weapon that actually looks like a child (played by Madeleine Yuna Voyles). When we got the chance to sit down with Edwards and discuss the creation of "The Creator," he opened up about making the movie on his own terms.

This is such a breath of fresh air. Shot on FX3's, real locations, PS compositing. 80 million is a 💩 load of money, but they really maximized it

I am so glad that Gareth is back. Him saying after RO, that he returns to smaller films felt like such a bummer because in my oppinion, he could be the next Spielberg. He manages to capture scale and heart. Something really rare these days. And pushing for new ways to shoot movies reminds me of Lucas, pushing things since 1977. For me, Gareth is in the top 5 of my favorite directors. A fan since Monsters. A great storyteller and down to earth guy.

hopefully this movie really gets recognized for what it was able to do with a budget that’s practically a fourth of the average mcu film.

Monsters was gold! Typically a film I don't have the patience for but it worked and worked well. Rogue One of course is the only Star Wars spinoff of them all worth any weight. Enjoyed his kicking off Godzilla...he's a great filmmaker / creative. Gotta see this film at the theater this week.

The Creator is a great original AI story after we all thought Hollywood couldn't possibly give us another. Gareth, no matter what he's doing, is a treasure.
The way he shot the film and edited made watching in IMAX a real treat. It's why we've always loved going to the movies. I've seen some ill for the film out there and how it copies so many other films. I don't think these people had even close to the reaction I did.
I noticed them as nods. They never imagined Gareth simply giving nods to those other films, and it didn't bother me because so much of it was original. The script moved along perfectly, IMO.
Me and my party who went to the theater all clapped when it was over. It's one of those rare films you thought should've been longer and I hope there will be a director's cut on Bluray. Day One buy for me.

He should be really proud of the film hes managed to create ! Loved every second of this film , was so real and believable using the dollar and shooting it in asia to save costs while investing the rest in visual effects and making the world more believable was such a smart thing to do ! Hope more films like this get made !
