A celebration of the reliable 3-star movies we love, GOOD ENOUGH MOVIES looks back on the not-quite-classics you can still quote by heart and will always stop to watch whenever they're on. Maybe it's a nostalgic fave you haven't seen in years, maybe it's a movie you would've loved but never heard about - until now. They're far from perfect, they're hardly ubiquitous, but they're still G.E.M.s
THIS INSTALLMENT: John Candy's other 80s family-getaway-gone-wrong movie is a laid back double-act with Candy as a lovable family man and Dan Aykroyd as the sleazy yuppie in-law who intrudes on a lakefront vacation. A family VHS staple to some but largely unknown to many; can 80s comedy completists afford to miss it?
P.S. This one's for you, Dad.

John Candy was like that really cool uncle with a big heart, and would always bring a sense of fun to an otherwise dour situation. That larger than life personality is what I miss most about him. Very few people in modern Hollywood have that sense of warmth, and fun that personified Candy. It's also a shame he didn't live long enough to show his full range as an actor because I'm sure he would've done amazing things beyond what most people know him for. He'll be missed.

I loved this movie growing up. It reflected so much of my family gatherings back then. Oh, the feelings!

The Great Outdoors is a classic. I probably watch it 3-5 times every spring/summer.

I watched this in the early 2000s as a kid with my family we all loved it so much we actually went to bass lake where it was filmed... It's almost a family tradition to watch it all together on a family trip once a year, no matter what the local

And still, my mom will occasionally run in a room and shout "BIG BEAR! BIG BEAR CHASE ME!" oh man

Yup, this was definitely part of my family's VHS collection and I'm pretty sure my dad has a DVD version as well. Great pairing between Aykryod and Candy, some funny moments (won't lie, the raccoon bits made me laugh), and an all around good time. Thanks, Bob.

I remember being a kid and my folks playing it every once in a while on VHS. Still hilarious and I can't help but to think of scenes from it if I'm ever anywhere where elements of camping is about. :-)

Hey that's me! I'm a fan and always thought it was a real gem. I was born in 86 so I didn't see it until the early 90s on bus, most likely a rental, and loved it ever since. Glad Bob could get the word out and hopefully let a newer audience experience it.

To this day sometimes I find myself using the "Big. Big bear chase. Big bear chase me!" line. Haven't seen this movie in years though. I should try to sometime, when my personal life is less hectic.

I love this movie. It makes me super nostalgic to watch it. Hearkens back to the best time in my life, when my whole family would unite at a big rental camp down at Lake Dunmore. Something that stopped happening once my grandmother passed away. I miss my family.

Bob, I gotta thank you... this series has been introducing me to some "Why The Hell HAVEN'T I Seen This Yet?" movies that look like a lot of fun.

John Candy at his craziest was by far while playing his multiple roles in Nothing but Trouble.

Holycrap. I've seen this flick so many times as a kid. But I would have overlooked now based on the generic title. Even then the action packed end made me tune out. Thanks for the blast to the solar plexus from the past.

This movie. and Harry and the Henderson defined a small corner of my early teenage exposure to family comedies that beneath the surface were certainly GEMS.
