I think Babymetal is in the Anti-Idol movement in Japan, so Idols that don't break the mold fall under AntiIdol. Like FEMM (Far East Mention Mannequins), Brats etc were all Jpop idols that "revolt" with a blessing from Jpop.

The best song writers Japan has to offer. The best Choreographer Japan has to offer. An old school metalhead with a vision and a group of amazing girls to front it all. • @Grington300
    @Grington300 5 лет назад +207

That surprised you didn't it. Their agency didn't think it would make money, it was the brainchild of just one man, Kei Kobayashi. He is their producer and a long time metalhead who found himself working in the kids division of the Amuse talent agency. He saw the potential of the lead singer (although she was only 10 or 11 when he first saw her singing with her previous Jpop trio) to front a fusion jpop/metal band because of her unique and very loud singing style. Amuse gave them virtually no financial backing to start with, they even had to borrow clothes to make their costumes for their first couple of shows (in a venue with a 150 capacity and in a food hall) and videos.
Why does it work? Because the girls are very talented and very hard working - and Su really can sing, because Kobayashi did the whole thing for the love of metal and gets the best song writers, because he also brought in the best metal musicians (the Kami Band) to support them in all their live shows since the end of 2013. There are more reasons that would take too long to write.
I'm hoping you didn't go straight to 'Gimme Chocolate' - that song is very polarising and has been known to put people off because it has far more of a WTF factor than Karate. Can I suggest you try 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' live at Sonisphere 2014, 'Road of Resistance' live in Japan or 'Megitsune' live at Budokan. Always go for good pro-shot live performances with Babymetal - they are first and foremost a live performance act, they sound better live with the Kami Band backing them and Su singing without the studio over-processing and they put on a great show and get the audience involved (unless the audience don't know them and are standing there saying WTF for the firast couple of songs) every time they play.

It works because the voice of Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) can cut through metal. And you have genius songwriters and top talent musicians. Vision/concept of Key Kobayashi (kobametal). It is weird because the trio are all as sweet and kawaii (cute) in real life, and yet you get these badass performances. Their secret in addition to natural talent and an appetite for performance?... Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.

One guy is responsible for this. It was like 2010 he heard Su, the lead singer when she was young and heard how loud her voice was. At this time metal in Japan was stagnate and he wanted to liven it up. In the beginning it was just an experiment. Japan still has a club like we had in US for younger singers. They graduate at 14 i think. Babymetal was a sub group of that. Babymetal is the only sub group to go big time and i mean big time. Babymetal is fun metal. No two songs sound the same. The musicians in the band are some of the best of Japan or in the world. You had an open mind. But now you have to see them live cuz thats where they shine. Babymetal is one of few bands that are better live. You have to experience the show. Lead singer was 18 at time of this video. She has been performing since she was 7 to 8 years old. To me there is no bad Babymetal song. I found them in 2013 and love seeing how far they have come. Enjoy your new journey. You will not be disappointed.

    • @KhronicD
      @KhronicD 4 года назад

One correction, you mention a "club." No, it is a multi-million dollar industry that churns out generic pop music like a machine. This is not bad per se, but there are definitely more sinister aspects to the industry that aren't really shown in the final products. I'm not talking the really evil stuff, just more how it's taking literally children and turning them into money making ma chines, while discarding them along the way if they don't pan out as profitable. There's a lot of really good things that come out of this industry, but there's definitely some downsides as well. To be clear, no one is FORCED into this, but they way it works behind the scenes can be pretty heartbreaking when you consider that a lot of the girls involved are literally children. 7, 8, 9, 10 years old. The Kpop industry has similar issues, just tends to trend towards slightly older performers.

@@raycollins511 Yeah, I figured you were referring to the MM club. It is a similar operation, but I just feel the Japanese version is much more hardcore compared to the Disney version. Though that may simply be due to what the public will accept. Pretty sure the MM club fucked up a LOT of kids dreams and or lives over the years, heh. That being said, it's still good to give kids an avenue to chase after their dreams. Everyone deserves at least a chance at that.

The first album collected songs going back to their start in 2010, so the integration of JPop/Idol with metal isn't always seamless.
They did a better job blending metal genres in the second album, and 'Karate' was the featured single.
Still, once you get over the WTF? head explosions, there are some real standouts on the first release as well.
And everything is heavier live, which is where they really shine.
Looks like you have some great suggestions for a follow up song.
I'd add another vote for 'Road of Resistance'. The Live in Japan performance on the official channel is pretty epic.
They do a good job conveying the meaning of this song with the video, but if you are curious about the lyrics:

Hi Drew! Great reaction! Thanks for checking out my favorite band BABYMETAL! Karate is the song that really got me into them. I'd known about them for about a year but dismissed them as a gimmick band, but after watching this video I was hooked. Karate is a song about fighting your inner demons and pressing on no matter what life throws at you: "Even if tears spill from our eyes, we stand up and fight! We will fight with all our heart, with our fists more, with our spirits more, with making all sharper. Never stopping we'll fight, even if our spirits are broken and we can no longer stand up."
BABYMETAL is legit, and even though this music video is one of their better ones, they are best experienced live. They're more performance artists than recording artists and their main focus is live shows. Their backing "Kami Band" is some of the best metal musicians from Japan. Here's my recommendations:
"Ijime, Dame, Zettai" live at Sonisphere 2014 UK - They booked a smaller side stage but were bumped up to the main stage because some other band pulled out. This was their first big performance in the west and the girls were terrified on how the UK metal heads would react to them.
"Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God Intro" Budokan Black Night - This is a Su-Metal (lead singer) solo, but it shows off the Kami Band.
"Road of Resistance" Live in Japan - This is how BABYMETAL ends an arena show.

  • @0okamino
    @0okamino 5 лет назад +12

BabyMetal started as just a little project, as a sub-unit of the middle-school themed junior idol group Sakura Gakuin (starting just a few months after Sakura Gakuin first formed). I think the reason it works is because it's more of a labor of love in its intention than some realize. Being a big success was not really an expectation there. In Japan, if you had said to record execs "Hey, I have an idea for a big money maker!", and any of the next words out of your mouth had to do with "heavy metal", you'd likely be kicked out (or laughed out), possibly even institutionalized (okay, slight exaggeration, but just barely).
Sure, metal musicians can make a living in Japan, and even have more room to get creative, but if you were looking for something hugely popular to make a guaranteed hit, or even a particularly big blip on the charts, metal really wouldn't be part of that equation by any common sense. I think a lot of people miss this point, and think that it was cynically manufactured, when it was just a little project started because a producer (Kobametal) liked Su's voice, and thought the power of it would be better suited to hard rock, and metal, rather than typical pop, and it ended up far outgrowing expectation (to the point of it becoming an independent entity from Sakura Gakuin after Su graduated from that group). This didn't come out of mass-production manufacturing, but more like precision engineering. ;)

      Couldn't say it better myself!
...it's also a reason why this group have a run through of members which you can find in j-pop bands.
Also.. the growing cult status among the members makes it even harder. Though Yui Mizuno left of natural reasons.

    2. The One - the nickname for BM fans (it is also the name of the BM song dedicated to their fans and is generally performed at most concerts towards the end).

Kei Kobayashi is the genius behind Babymetal. They originate as a sub-unit of Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, a Japanese idol singing group with the theme of Junior High School. Although sometimes confused for the same thing, J-pop and Idol are not the same. Idol promotes more frilly and innocent type of performance and music. With the theme of a Junior high school, just as in real Japanese schools, they had extracurricular clubs, or sub-units within the main group. Babymetal was the Heavy music club of Sakura Gakuin. Producer, and metal head, Kei Kobayashi saw potential in one particular girl that had the presence and voice to fulfill his dream. That was Suzuka Nakamoto. He then developed this concept, with permission from Amuse, the parent company and talent agency for Sakura Gakuin. In 2010 he teamed up Yui and Moa, who are 1 1/2 years younger than Su to compliment her in this endeavor. Their first release was Doki Doki Morning. You should react to it just so you can see where they started from and compare it to what you've seen already. From Doki Doki Morning in 2010 to Gimme Chocolate in 2014, and Karate in 2016. Can't wait to see more reactions from you. Subscribed!

after you see them live and look back when this thing blew up .. the first thing you realize is they are pros .. everything is professional even at super young age their live shows will blow you away .. you have to see Akatsuki live at Budokan .. Headbanger … watch Ijime Dame Zetia live at the Sonisphere festival after you see those you will realize how good the band is and how amazing this whole thing is .. another must watch is No Rain No Rainbow .

It works because they are so damn good. Su in an incredible vocalist and the Kami band can shred! It’s innovative and different and just awesome. I’m primarily a death metal fan, and I love BabyMetal!
Also they aren’t kids, and haven’t been for awhile. Su and Moa are both in their 20s. This video is a little older.

Forgot to mention that they have official music vids. Karate, Head Banger Megitsune, Ljime,Dame,Zettai which are technically great, very artistic but the live shows are epic and not to be missed. Here is a list of what I consider the best live shows:
    1. Road of Resistance Live In Japan - epic masterpiece. Of the last 4 reacters who saw this video, 3 men and 1 women. All said they had goose bumps and the hair on their arm was standing up by the end and the woman was crying she was so overwhelmed.
    2. Head Banger Legend of 1997 - the concert was not in 1997, it refers to the year the lead singer was born. Epic audience reaction as you have never seen.
    4. Pa Pa Ya feat F. Hero - you will never think of papaya salad the same again.
    5. The One
all the concerts at Budokan are good. All the concerts out of European festivals are ok but don't have the stage size of camera angles to do them justice.
As this will come up,Baby Metal is basically "metal", their is another band called Band-Maid which is also all female but they are basically traditional "rock" and are excellent and worth a look. They don't have the stage presence that Baby Metal does with their shows but are an excellent band.
I really look forward to your reactions as your commentary is excellent.

This was nice to watch, thank you! Kawaii means cute, in case you haven't found out, yet. And they are indeed more or less the only contender in that genre.
Usually it takes about three songs to convince listeners that they are awesome, but it seems in your case it might take less. :-) During the first verse you were still sceptical, and by the first chorus you were already hooked and started smiling. You are exactly right, how they manage to make this work is a phenomenon. And the great thing is, you haven't seen anything, yet! This song is actually one of their less experimental, more "standard" Metal songs. No two songs sound the same, they are all different, and most incorporate other genres as well, being it EDM, Reggae, Hip Hop, Ska, Dubstep or whatever. And they all work!
Adding to that, their live qualities are beyond anything you have seen. Whether it's the musicians, the vocals, the dancing, the stage presentation, the crowd interaction, the positivity, the energy, everything is exceptionally awesome! I hope you'll do more reactions, it would be great to accompany you on your journey. You will be smiling more than with any other band, I'm certain.
Most will recommend "Road of Resistance" next, because it's a phantastic live experience, but I'd go for something a bit more kawaii, so my recommendation would be an anti-bullying song called "Ijime, Dame, Zettai": ruclips.net/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/видео.html

Babymetal is like a foreign religion, at the beginning you dont understand and you are shocked then you become a fan and cherish them. First time i heard them i was in akihabara in tokyo, their music was playing everywhere. Me and my friends hated it, 2 days later we were looking for concert near us

Should have started with Gimme Chocolate from Babymetal. But if you want to be blown away by Japanese girls. Band Maid is 5 early 20's Japanese girls that can really, really play. Try Play or Thrill or Dice or Don't Let Me Down.

Fans of Japanese pop culture weren't really all that surprised that this combo of J-pop and metal would work, as this mixing of genres has been taking place for almost two decades now in anime. The difference has been that it's been mashups of J-pop and different forms of rock in anime, especially the music found in the front and end title sequences. Babymetal takes that proven formula and just cranks it up several notches.

When you have Rob Zombie and Korn both saying you rock harder than most of their openers you know you are doing it right. Seen them in Houston TX in 2018. So did not disappoint. Would see them again if I had the chance.

Babymetal is crazy, I've love hard metal shit for two decades and Babymetal is amazing, they grown on me pretty fast. I recommend you go with Akatsuki official live: beautiful, fast, tons of energy and crazy dual solo.
And if you wanna go deeper in japanese metal, two recomendatios: Versailles - Faith & Decision (I think one of the best metal compositions ever) and The GazettE - Falling (insane how hard they can get).
    Congrats for the channel.

It's important to recognize the exceptional musicianship of the instrumentalists in the band. The songs themselves have excellent structure, with all of the hooks in the right places. Insofar as the lead singer is concerned, I liken the mixture of hard rock and pure female vocals to Evanescence and early Jefferson Airplane.
The end product is well-balanced, with the soaring vocals supported by precise, but bombastic music. They alternate in taking the spotlight. The experience listening to it is like eating food that has complex flavors; sweet, savory and bitter -- perfectly blended by people who know what they're doing. They put considerable effort in their live performances, so people attending get more than their money's worth.
I have to be in the mood to listen to hard rock, but BabyMetal has made me a fan.

I've been a fan of BABYMETAL since early 2014. I literally listened to nothing but for almost 3 years. My love of the group never dipped, even through 2018, which saw the fanbase pretty divided. (But, let's face it, 2018 seemed to be the year of divided fans. Star Wars, Doctor Who, BABYMETAL. Others, I'm sure.)
I think part of the appeal (outside of the talent of the girls, the musicians, and their production and marketing teams) _is_ the fact that combining heavy metal and J-pop _shouldn't_ work, and yet _it does!_ I've seen a few other groups make their own attempts at kawaii metal, to varying degrees of success, but none of them can touch the originals. Looking forward to _Metal Galaxy_ later this year!

Excellent review. Next should be Road of Resistance Live in Japan which is their epic masterpiece. Wall of death, killer entro, killer audience participation, killer solo, what more could you ask for. I will say you started off with the best song and vid to start off with. BABYMETAL created the genre of Kawaii (cute) metal, they’ve been around since 2014 and since then, one of the guitarists died, and YUIMETAL (rounder faced pigtails) left the band, a new star has risen and is in their new single PAPAYA. It’s on my bucket list to see them in concert, and I also really want their graphic novel. I got into them on a car ride when my dad told me Vocaloid wasn’t real music. I had to tell off a boy blasting METALLICA on my bus, cuz he thought it wasn’t real metal, when BABYMETAL is inspired by METALLICA and THEY like BABYMETAL back, funny how the world works sometimes
