Zadina is a WAY bigger bust than kotkaniemi. Kotkaniemi will at least be a 3rd line center for his NHL career. He could still bloom into a decent 2nd liner. Zadina is a full on bust at this point. Zadina was supposed to go higher too while KK was a bit off the board
To everyone commenting, would just like to point out that some players just don’t or can’t thrive due to situation. Turcotte has barely played due to injury, of course he’s now going to take another year or so if he stays healthy to actually develop at the pace the organization expected. Some things are out of player control. We don’t choose to get injured and become “busts”. Look at Dylan strome’s career. Everyone gave up on him. He was on tons of these dumb RUclips video lists. Look what’s happening now. Don’t give up on anyone til their career is over. I’m not a Kings fan either, I don’t know why I need to say that, but I’m just waiting for the “found the kings fan 😂” comment as is stereotype here on RUclips
Turcotte isn’t a bust he’s had so much trouble with injuries since his draft year. He’s a +11 in 20 games & being a very solid 2 way player so far this season albeit not a 5th overall pick.
You should have covered the Red Wings drafted Filip Zadina 6th overall. The Canucks drafted Quinn Hughes 7th overall. That proves BUST and bad GM decisions. The Pens drafted Sam Poulin 1st round 21st pick in 2019. SP has only12 career games played and 2 points. The Caps drafted Connor McMichael 1st round 24th pick after Poulin the bust. Just this season alone CM has 23 games played with 23 points and 13 goals. CM has 40 career goals. Even 2019 3rd rounder Aliaksei Protas has 20 points in 23 games this year. We could go on but busts should be compared to who comes after. For example, the Pens drafted Kasperi Kapanen 1st round 22nd pick in 2014 while the Bruins drafted David Pastrnak 1st round 25th pick in 2014. YIKES, just like Zadina over Quinn Hughes. Yes I know Kapanen was traded luckily for PHIL KESSEL THE IRONMAN STANLEY CUP CHAMPION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zadina was the last 1st round pick ken Holland everade for the Red wings. It's too bad Yzerman didn't come home 1 year earlier. I doubt he takes zadina but he might have so who knows
There seem to be big name busts pretty frequently in hockey and football. On the opposite side - A key to the Red Wings long tenure at the top was their ability to repeatedly pick diamonds in the rough with very late draft picks
I agree that KK is not a bust. He is a great defensive forward that plays a solid two way game. Canes had Vincent Trochek in that same exact role and his best season as a Cane was 55 points. It’s Carolina’s system for their 2nd line Center. Verdicts still out at 24 but as for right now not a bust. Plus, what bust gets a 6 year extension? Carolina has him playing the exact role that he is. I’m calling that the Narrator is probably a Montreal Canadian fan. Just saying.
The funny thing about Turcotte is that he doesn't look bad on the ice when he plays. He has some shiftinness and some slick stick handling abilities. He looks like he belongs out there and can even impact the game, but he just doesn't put up points. He was recently put on the wing on the top line with Kopitar and Kempe to see if they can utilize his abilities better, but thus far, he hasn't made an impact on the score sheet. It's funny because Byfield is pretty similar in that regard. They both have the tools, but the toolbox isn't there.
He’s a +11 in 20 games this season so far. Obviously not 5th overall pick production but he’s not a bust of a player. He can be a really good NHLer if he’s healthy.
@Tombauer97 yeah, that +11 is incredible with his lack of offensive production. Byfield is -3. Turc has never really shined offensively since leaving the USNDP but maybe he can be like a Trevor Lewis type or something. Those guys are valuable as well. Well, he has far more skill than Lewie but the contribution to winning seems to be there in some aspect.

Holtz is beyond a bust...the fact the op mentioned an article blaming the devils for lack of development is hilarious...this dude wore out his welcome in utica where his coach told fitz dont send him back down we wont play him...then lindy being forced to play him 82 games where he personally sunk every line he played on ...then the devils robbed the golden knights trading him for kotter ....last offseason his national team chose an amateur player over putting him on their national team.... holtz refuses to play defense and to support his teammates along the boards on puck battles.... he is the definition of a blown pick .... the devils have to be thanking the hockey gods they stole dawson mercer 6 picks later that draft
I'll be honest never watched him play and was very wtf when he got traded for being so young and stuff. But now that actually makes sense. Plus Cotter has gelled quite well
@jakeheerwagen8007 best part about the trade was fitz being able to recognize and admit he blew a pick and then completely ripping off the knights to get rid of that pick....in fitzjesus defense...he did absolutely steal dawson mercer 7 or 8 picks later in that same draft ...so that might be why he gambled so much on holtz ... btw ..really appreciate your well thought out and respectful response to me. . Jesperi Kotkaniemi isn't a bust. For starters he was never expected to be first line center. Second of all 34 points as a rookie playing centre in 3rd line role is very good. Third of all 48 point pace isn't fit for a bust.
I hesitate to call a 24 year old a bust. He puts up ok numbers, and the Canes have enough offense that he doesn't have to light it up, however the production they get for the cost they pay - 5M AAV, has got to be the worst in the NHL. At least the Habs got something for Kotki, something that isn’t yet applicable for the Sens on winger Tyler Boucher, drafted by the Sens at 10th overall during his NHL Draft year. No NHL regular-season or playoff game, with a top-10 pick, doesn’t look very good.
