  • Bobby Fischer's favourite chess set, the Dubrovnik.
    bestchessmeneve...
    Today I am studying some chess from a book using a very special chess set , the very elusive and extremely rare chess set from the past and it took me two years to find: The original Dubrovnik chess set, made in the Fifties and Sixties in Zagreb in the renowned master Jakopović's workshop. These are the pieces that Bobby Fischer proclaimed his favourite, this is the chess set that we can see him analyze with in various documentaries and photographs. This is the chess set that everybody wants to copy, but usually fails.
    This set is a bit different from the original 1950 Dubrovnik chess set that was apparently used only once in the 1950 Olympiad and then never again, while this one was reissued shorly after that with some changes in design and used most notably in 1958 Interzonal . Note a bit bigger king, the fat rook, the bishop that looks a bit like a small child pacifier, and the differently but still superbly carved knight. These sets was very expensive at the time, costing about one average socialist worker's month pay.
    The pieces are not weighted, just the way Bobby Fischer liked them, and were made from maple and beautifilly colored on the black side, note how the color has nicely faded with use and old age.
    This is it, this is the Fifties Dubrovnik no. II, this is the Fischer set.

    Hi! Vjekoslav Jakopović is my grandfather. I'm very proud of him and his skills. When the workshop was running my whole family helped with work in it.

      Hi Vladka. Please tell more. Who designed the original your grandfather or someone else in the family? And the designs that followed, etc. Where did come the inspirations for the design? Was it taken from soviet sets, etc.?

    So both sides were made of maple, and the black pieces were dyed?
    That's very interesting. I had always assumed the black pieces were made of a different species of wood, maybe walnut.

    Great Chess Set, you can get a reproduction set, I wonder how accurate it would be compared to the original

    been in love with this set for years now, its probably been a couple of years since i saw this vid, the holy grail in my opinion is the Jakapovic set. the most ergonomic, perfect-sized, simple, and beautiful set.

    Thank you Jonas for “Dubronizing” us. The main 1950, the older one, is better in the aesthetic department in my opinion. The D2's fat rook reminds me of an African djembe drum head. The King's fatness they let loose like a Texan model without a corset/waist trainer. It makes it a tad less elegant is all I'm saying when compared at 1:45. The bishop like you said, small child pacifier (my fiancé likes to say “the ones with nipples on top,” the balltops do seem larger than those in D1) and They did a complete 180 with the knights, a commanding neck with small head in the D1 and the complete opposite in the reissue, small neck with bigger head. Her royal maiden, with only 5-cut coronet to originally 9 to 15 cuts! It surprised me that with all those economizations in the set, was worth an average workers’ one month’s bacon. Wow.

      I thought the 5 turrets were meant to represent the regions of Croatia. Why are there 9-15 on the original?

    What is the best board size for these pieces? (square size) and what was the board size of the 1950 Olympiad?

    • @burekexperts
      @burekexperts  4 года назад

      Standard 55 mm is just fine, but I prefer 57 mm (as with Drueke board in the video). Original was 60 mm.

    • @KeepChessSimple
      @KeepChessSimple 4 года назад +1

      @@burekexperts Thanks for the answer! To my eyes they also look nice on 60mm. On some chess fora there seem to be an obsession that the king base diameter should be around 75%. This is also USCF/FIDE rules. But the Dubrovnik king with 39mm seems to be more around 69-70%. Also the standard Tournament sets you see in Europe the king base diameter of Stanton pieces is more around 68% and even the DGT set seems to be.

    Hello Jonas:Based on the 1959 video on the Bled Candidates tournament.. The Dubrovnik sets used look like the 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad sets and not the later reissued Dubrovnik II Fischer set. Particularly the Knights and Queens. Here's a link to that video:

      He was traveling a lot and preferred to carry less weight.

    • @thepenultimateninja5797
      @thepenultimateninja5797 7 месяцев назад

      They had somewhat larger bases instead of having weights added, so they are not as heavy as a standard Staunton set.
      Apparently Fischer preferred the lighter pieces, because he said they were easier to carry around.
      This makes sense, because he moved around a lot, living in hotels.

      An original hardwood American Drueke. I think Jonas owns two. Rare little pigeons nowaday. One was in play at Kasparov - DeepBlue match, 1997. After game one of that match K complained that the board was scratched so organizers replaced for another Drueke. Bad decision? he lost a legendary game.

    It's a great set and all but it would have been also good to have the rooks a bit taller. Looks a little awkward that the knight is taller than the castle (rook).
