If Bobby Fisher was alive he would definitely like you to make a set for him,he was heartbroken that the set in storage was lost to non payment of storage fees. Beautiful work young man..I'm sure you could up your price and do this for a living, work of art for sure..keep it up.🤟🙂
Amazing craftsmanship and artistry. Only slight downside was seeing the beautiful finished pieces on a vinyl board. Would've enjoyed the last shot being in a wooden board.
Awesome. I think you could rough out a knight by using that dremal tool in a vertical way to carve out half the knight on its side. Need something like a pantograph mechanism.
An amazing reproduction, easily the best one ever! And I have seen both the first Dubrovnik (used at the Olympiad) and the later Dubrovnik (one of which was bought by Bobby Fischer).
Forgot to say that how you managed to do this just from photographs is a complete mystery to me! I will persuade my chess friend Branimir Brebrich to let me photograph his original Dubrovnik and when I have managed that I will get the photographs to you somehow.
+Dan Scoones yeah that would be great! Your friends name sounds familiar. And hard to believe you have seen Fischer's set. I thought both were long lost. One being stolen, the other sold off in his Bekins container.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. Right now I am 3D printing a chess set for my grandson but I think I am going to try turning some pieces in the future. I like your idea for the duplicator!
Please include me in that consideration for the selling of a future set you may have to offer after you sell to Michael Ladzinski. Your work is extremely impressive and it would be an honor to own one of your creations Mr. Gabriel Coss. Keep up the great craftsmanship and please keep me in mind as well as a potential buyer if you decide to go forth and sell a few more "refined" Dubrovnik sets. I'm very much interested. Best regards...G.Rosado.
Congratulations on making such a beautiful reproduction of the Dubrovnik 1950 Olympiad set. What wood did you use for the dark pieces? BTW, Bobby Fischer owned the later version of the Dubrovnik set . Are you offering any of the sets you made for sale? Or will you make custom sets?
Thank you sir. I used walnut for the dark pieces. Yes I mentioned he owned the reissued version (Dubrovnik II), not the original. I won't be selling these two sets but might consider selling future sets after more refinement.
The Fischer Dubrovnik is the bets set. Unweighted. I've looked harder. Door a good one, haven't found one. I will be following you, hopefully you start making the Fischer set one day... Fingers crossed...
+Rick Resendiz The hardest decision was which set to make, the set that Fischer owned, or the set he said was the best he ever played on. I'll probably make the Dubrovnik II someday. Thanks.
That's a good point. I guess I was looking out for what potential customers would want. When people see fishers time magazine cover and those clips of him "gracefully" moving pieces, I think thats what they would prefer. That being said, I would definitely buy the original dubrovnik. After all, Fischer preferred that one.
The only other Dubrovnik piece Wood turner I could find is this guy from Brazil. It's very decent, above average, but I like Gabriel's work more. Dubrovnik Xadrez torneado ruclips.net/video/OCRqrsQyoWc/видео.html His focus seems to be more on the Dubrov II Fischer set (post 1950) based on the 5-cut queen crown.
Thanks for replying. It would also be interesting if you share in your further videos photos of the original sent to you by Dan Scoones. Only if you wish, I mean.
I like the cpoy method, but you say you don't use it anymore, I assume you found a better way, if so I would love to watch a video covering that,, ps: good job, the knights were carved beautifully too,
Thank you I'll have another video soon. The copy method was helpful because my turning technique was not great. I've gotten better and now just as fast with the more traditional approach and a quick marking jig.
This is beautiful work.. Is there any way you would sell a set and ship it to Denmark... I would buy one for my daughter who is very much into chess.. congratulations on your fine work..
Premium replica! You are indeed skilled craftsmen, I am very suprised to see that good reproduction. How did you decide the precise measurements for the pieces, just by watching pictures on the internet?
Hey looks good man , would love a set for myself, wish I had time to make such a set, busy with wife and kids it's nearly impossible and don't have a wood lathe, but have carved many chess pieces with a pocket knife that look fantastic never tried any knights though with my knife only round pieces but I know I could do it nice dedication man awesome to see you have the time for this!!!
Thanks a lot. Yeah took me a while to commit the time to make an entire set. Once you make one though you'll want to make a better one and a better one...
Awesome set, great explanation, and wonderful video. What would you suggest for someone with 0 wood working experience but is interested in making his own set? Where would one start?
Since nobody answered your question, I will tell you what I did. I made many chess pieces out of sculpey brand OVEN-BAKE clay. I place a round lump of clay on top of a poker chip. I mold it by hand as best I can. I don't care if they are IMPERFECT. A little bit of imperfection gives them more character. I also made a set by molding-making and then filling the molds with CONCRETE... which you can see on the website INSTRUCTABLES dot com. Just search for concrete chess set. I think the CLAY starting point would be a good place to start before trying the wood methods, ESPECIALLY for making the knights. The clay will give you a lot of practice on those 2 MOST DIFFICULT pieces. (I too had no artistic talent making knights) after making 20 or 30 knights... I got better.
Sorry for not seeing this until now. I'd recommend the book Wood turning Chessmen by Mike Darlow. Very simple techniques shown. Wish I had found it earlier. Would have saved some lessons learned.
Great work ! Quick question, what is the best glue to use with felt?, I have a set I am trying to re-felt and it was recommended I use spray adhesive like the 3M super 77. Any particular technique you have to use to ensure it is done immaculately ? Thanks !
Thanks! Just recently I found out that baize is the better material than felt. So far I've only used adhesive backed felt and a circle cutter so I haven't experimented with glues for felt on wood. I'll refer you to this guy ruclips.net/video/vTs255j9xhA/видео.html
Great work! If you are starting a list of potential customers, please add my name. I will check back later to see if you will be taking contact information. I would be more than happy to send you my info. Keep it up!
Hey I just used eboy stain on one of my sets, after it dries, what do you recommend I use as a finishing touch? Candle wax/ bees wax? Saw your videos and felt like messing around with one of my wood sets. Its beed drying for 12hrs, still a bit wet, but drying up , should be done in another 12hrs maybe.
Hmm after staining on bare wood then you need a sealer. Let it cure/harden completely (1-3 days for some sealers) before you start with any abrasive buffing/polishing. I was using the beall buffing system. Some thought the wax left it too glossy, too much glare on the pieces. Just buffing with the tripoli wheel and wiping with a soft cloth leaves the right amount of sheen in my opinion but I'm no expert.
I'm still trying different glues for that. I used a special gorilla glue since I figured the expanding foam would bond well with the felt/baize fibers. But don't get it close to the edge or it will be visible.
What size chessboard at 7:20 ? Would you recommend 57mm (2.25") for your pieces or as in the original folding chessboard case of the 1950 Dubrovnik which was 60mm?
At 7:20 is a 2.25" chessboard. I feel the 3.5" king with 1.5" base looks okay on the 2.25" square although technically a little undersize since the king base should be 75% of 2.25=1.68". Funny though that the original set with 60mm was even more under size.
A Ukrainian GM once showed me this trick: "Take a "pouwn" and put in center line of two squares. Now take one of his brothers and put next to him, make them touch. Now another of his brothers and place on othere side making touch. Remove the middle man and two "pawuns" must be in center of their posts. And that is perfect. If too apart, they will feel disconnected and if too close they breathe eacth otheres' air." I agree with you on the 57mm square size. Noj of Slovenia's 1950 Dubrov they make have it marked in theier website as 37mm base size (1.45") !!
Continued... And their Dubrov II as 39mm (1.53" base.) I don't care much for the "75%" rule, but ultimately it comes down to personal taste, I'd say. Personally I hate chessboard congestion so I don't mind a little bit bigger square. i.e., I enjoy using a Dubrov with 1.65" base on 2.37" or 2.25" board. And a plastic one with a 1.37" base looks good on a 2.12" square but for playing purposes a 2.25" is more comfortable for the movements. Best wishes to you for 2018. Awaiting eagerly for your improvement videos...!
@@conjured_up_skeletons6178 I agree with you. This whole 75% rule is a bit weird. If you look at boards provided at Western European tournaments or even the profession DGT set, the king base is more close to 68%. The CB Dubrovnik with a pawn of 32mm looks way too cramped on my 2.25 board.
Why are these pieces 'the best'?? The wood isn't that special in terms of its looks, the pieces aren't that special in terms of their design...what makes it so special then? Not to say you didn't do a good job, the pieces look very well made, I just don't quite get the enthusiasm surrounding them.
That is some skill you have, I was amazed. FIDE and USCF call for 78% rule. So ideally, for your pieces I would suggest going with 2'' square and 2.16'' as a limit.. 2''; you would meet the tournament standatds as FIDE calls for 5-6cm i.e 1.96'' to 2.5''.
The FIDE/USCF rule is a bit weird. All the standard sets provided at European Tournaments and even the professional DGT setup you see the pro's playing with, the king base diameter is more close to 68-70% and you can fit four pawns on a square. As a side note: I thought the FIDE rules are more closer to 72-75%?
I'd estimate about 50 hrs. The Knights and pawns taking the most time. Just make a couple pieces every evening and you'll have your own set in less than a month.
