Like many hand tool woodworkers, I've got a mild obsession with vintage woodworking tools. They're incredibly important in our craft and frankly, they're just as good if not better than a lot of modern day tools. Fun fact: most antique or vintage chisels, and vintage tools in general, are made with harder, better quality steel than what's available at the big box store today. Because of that, tool restoration is more important now than ever in my opinion. In this video, we'll go over how to restore rusty chisel and chisel restoration by beginning with tool restoration rust removal, sharpening a chisel on a waterstone, sharpening a chisel with a honing guide, how to make a chisel handle, how to refinish a chisel handle, and ultimately how to refinish a chisel. This video is more than just how to restore a chisel or how to fix a chisel, but goes step by step in making a timber framing slick, a prize in vintage woodworking hand tools. At the end of the day, with just a few simple tools, time, and determination, vintage chisel restoration becomes easy and rusty chisel restoration will become second nature. Restoring a chisel is fun, and attaches to your future work beautiful stories that will last as long as what you make with it.

"having 6 inches instead of 8" LMAO
After the fact I realized that I missed an opportunity to call my stuff “my six inch grinder” but I was too lazy to re record the VO.
It was really the perfect comment!
Few things line up so well
Yes, this and the lubing strokes shot were funny - if not more than a little homo...
Keep’em coming yer doing 👍
Thanks bruh. Should have another one out in a few days or so.
Great Job Chris! And again... always maintain the eye contact 👀
Forever and ever
Wonderful job restoring that chisel 👍
Thank you!
Nice work.
Thank you sir!
I’ve got to get me one of those sharpeners. Love it and amazing restoration project Chris! Keep up the great work.
Aw shucks thanks Brent! Appreciate ya.
thats looks cool.
Thanks! It’s still working pretty great although I do wish I made the handle a wee bit shorter.
Having 6 inches instead of 8 lmao! Gold dude.
Having 4.75 inches instead of 6...

Nice work Chris! The magnets in the leather cover is a great idea
Thanks man. Yeah I noticed over time my holdfast covers had some issues staying on because the leather breaks in and compressed over time... so I was worried I’d have a similar thing here eventually. So the magnets were a good way to make sure I’m not flinging it all around the joint!
Great video man. This is super helpful info. I definitely need to up my sharpening game.
Thanks dude! Yeah I HIGHLY recommend these shapton glass backs. You can get a couple diamond stones if you're not into the grinder idea and then have a couple water stones for polishing. It truly makes all the difference in hand tool work.
CHRIS THE CHISEL CAME OUT GRAET .I JUST LOE THE OLD TOOLS I HAVE 100S OF THEM IN MY SHOP ..THAY REALY INSPIRE ME,FROM DOUG
Love it. Awesome Doug.
You're so welcome my friend you are so very welcome and deserved. when you get a chance if you would like to check out my majestic butterfly video I think you might like it. From Doug
Turned out super nice Chris!
Appreciate that Sam!
Awesome job, 👍. You might have used a spoke shave, I find it quicker than a plane. Just personal preference mostly. Thanks for the video.
Yeah I considered a spoke. I need to sharpen mine.
This was awesome! Well done bud! Now I want to break out all my old chisels and refinish them. 🤙🏼
Yaaaas jordan that’s the spirit
Awesome work! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks for your support always Fred 👏🏽
If you like the drawknife, you’ll love a spokeshave!
Yeah I’m a big fan of mine! Problem is it’s super dull.
"Save a tool" 👌
This thing is still working great. Just sharpened it the other day in fact.
"Draw knives are just for removing bark on epoxy tables..."
love it
Or so I’ve heard...
Slo-mo shot talking about finish, hot damn. Haven't laughed that hard in a minute. Keep it up, man!
Don’t forget to kiss the homies goodnight.
thats a fine looking rod dogcowboy
New name: dog cowboy.
Nice chisel! All that work getting the handle oiled led to a satisfying climax.
I’ll probably take it on a second date.
Outstanding video! Came here from r/Leatherworking and really appreciate the quality of this video. Very well polished.
Welcome to leatherwork, I think you'll enjoy it. But be forewarned it has its own rabbit holes. You may be finding yourself chasing down the perfect round knife. Or looking through template archives.
It is a blast tho. And we'll done on the leatherwork shown in the video. You're fortunate that you already have a steady hand due to your other persuits.
To be clear the leather work is a friend of mine who helped me out. But with that being said, I may be taking a trip down the rabbit hole too.
What would we do without slow motion?
Definitely have less fun
Hiii quick question. Does the microadjust feature on your taytools marking gauge work? Because it just doesn't turn on mine. Thanks.
Sure does. Are you able to loosen it up?
@@CowDogCraftWorks nope i cant get it to turn but thats ok since i usually just tigjten the thumb screws a little and then "microadjust" the head with my hand
Yeah you might have a janky one. I actually might have a wooden marking gauge in my future... so that might solve some of your issues. 😉
@@CowDogCraftWorks thanks.
Nice intro western music
Cool video, good result👌🔥 subbed also
Glad you like it! Thanks for coming on board.
Daaaamn that custom push stick tho! Can I get a link? 💘
Yaaas QUEEN
why dont you have a splitting kniffe?
Haven’t gotten around to it yet.
@@CowDogCraftWorks well. Go around for it. Just to precent kickback
@@thijspluis9998 I really don’t have any kickback issues.
@@CowDogCraftWorks prevent. So it most likeley doesent happen
@@thijspluis9998 I don’t necessarily disagree with you but I am of the opinion that strong safety practice as opposed to safety equipment eliminates most of that margin for error. Eventually I’ll install a splitter but the best tool for eliminating or reducing the chances of kickback is using the saw correctly.
That turned out really slick!! If you change you mind and want to make more handles using hand tools you should make a Spar Gauge. It marks out the lines for an octagon and it even works on tapered stock. (shameless self promotion time: I made a video about how to make a simple version here: ruclips.net/video/oZyKdswxGQw/видео.html)
SHAMELESS. But yeah I’m probably not gonna be making octagons anymore. Unless I make the world’s largest and thiccest pair of chopsticks.
@@CowDogCraftWorks that would be a fun project! The thing about making it an octagon is that this is the intermediate step. After that it is very easy to turn the work piece into a round shape. But it's probably even easier to do that on a lathe 🤣🤣 (but I don't own a lathe 😓)
Stop making me like leather work. I already kind of want to try it. I don't need more things to do. I already have too many things to do. Nice slick btw
Leather work looks super fun dude. I’m about it. But I ain’t gonna do it. 😂
Dang sexy slick indeed....but please please never ever EVER hit a slick with a mallet or hammer. Slicks are only used by hand. Chisel with a metal handle collar is designed to be hit...slicks are not...😁👍🏽
That lesson was learned within about twelve hours of making the video.
@@CowDogCraftWorks hopefully not the hard way. Sorry just now seen this video even though it was from a year ago.
@@IveysFamilyFactotum no not the hard way. Still have it same handle and all. Works great.
@@CowDogCraftWorks awesome good to hear. These are tools I will be making once we are moved and I get my blacksmith shop back up and running.
😂😂😂😂
Glad someone finds me funny
@@CowDogCraftWorks Funny, entertaining, helpful.
Love your video’s Mate, with a bit of humor in them, goes a long way.
Don’t appreciate this porn references. I am unsubscribing.
Bye Neil!
