Very useful! I've been toying with the idea of charging my phones and tablets, including a Surface Go, with solar energy. I have a power bank hooked up to a solar panel hanging in my window; it gets topped up during the day, then it charges my phones overnight. But it won't do the Go, since it isn't PD compatible. So, all I need now is a second PD charger, and all of my mobile communications and computing is completely, and very simply, off-grid!

the usb c to surface pro connector cable is only one little thing in the link to decent charging. You need a powerbank that can deliver usb-c PD standard AND at a decent wattage. This video just talks about cables. That is not enough and because you sell them or make money of them, I find this video misleading. You simply do not tell enough about the needed power supply and electronics needed to talk with the surface pro to agree on the voltage. USB(c) standard is always 5 volt. That is not enough for surface pro to charge while being on. It needs to switch to the higher voltages and for that communication between power supply and surface pro is needed. It is NOT just about cables and power supplies
It turns out that the 45W Samsung travel adaptor that I got for my new Galaxy phone also works perfectly with my Surface Pro 7. So now I only need to bring 1 charger when I'm on the road!

Shouldn't all charges have power delivery (PD) since that's literally the point of a charger?
@@bland9876 PD is a proper name of capability of having extra juice transfered compared to normal charging. Hence why it needs usb C to usb C cables. There is no PD for usb A outputs. Always check for PD especially now that most electronics are converting to USB C inputs and outputs

I actually have one charger that will charge my Nintendo switch faster than another charger even though the other charger says quick charge on it because it's for a specific device and only outputs the standard 5v at 2A when used on something else

After your last video on this subject, I now use a Cygnett 27Ah battery (the largest I am (well, was!) allowed to carry on an international flight) with a USB-C to USB-C cable to charge my Surface Go and now my Surface Pro X, and with a J-Go Tech USB-C to Surface connect cable for my Surface Pro 4. All works well and the J-Go cable seems to be a good quality product.
The combination of the long battery life of the Pro X with the extra life from the external 27Ah battery is a great combination.

i understand type c is more compact but one advantage of using a surface connect to type c cable to charge using a power bank is that now the type c port is free to be used for other purposes such mic, card reader, ethernet hub, etc.
A solution to this is a portable USBC with ether etc, car reader, etc, but choosing one that also has PD.

The USB-A standard does not specify to allow enough power to charge a large device like a laptop. It is a very old standard.

I would not recommend purchasing the Jego Tech cable. I purchased the usb c-type charging cable and the wall box charger a total of $60 to use the charger. What I received I would expect from a dollar store charging cable. I realized the 1st week that the wire is exposed at the strain relief and the pvc cover point of the cable. The cable had minimal handling as it was in a stationary place. I have emailed and no reply. I have called the service number is non-service. I was asked for a review at the 30 days of purchase but no response to any request of a replacement.

fun facts oem nintendo switch charger works and charges while on. because at 2.6v it makes 39 watts not as good as the 65watt surface charger but it surprised me still.

I have one of those usb c to surface connect cables. 10 bux and works perfect. And also, I have it for almost 2 years now. Never even saw his dongle thing bulk device. This guy needs to up his research, seriously.
I use it via my 60W output Xstorm 26K mah Bank. Also used it via my old 20K Xiaomi Bank. That last one broke due to minimal water damage. 25W wall charge works to charge when surface is off. Good luck!
Good for you. Those things are rare. I had one too and sold it for more than I paid for it. They were only on the market for a year or so and they went EOL as soon as the Pro 7 came out.

Apologies if this has been answered before: but have you tested any PD hubs with ethernet in the USBC port? Can the Surface 7 charge and get network over Type C simultaneously? Cheers!
I haven't specifically tested it, but I believe it can. The USB-C protocol definitely supports it.
I've had two Surface Pro 7 connectors since December and both get hot and many times don't seat properly. I would prefer a different charging method, but want to be sure I purchase the correct items. Are you saying I can purchase a USB-C to USB-C cable and either a portable charger or wall charger? If so, what wall charger would you recommend?
Has to be a PD capable charger, but yes. Try the J-Go Tech chargers.
Hi, I live & work off-grid, using my Surface Laptop 3, using a KFD 12v to USB-C product. I wondered if you had any insights into whether the Laptop has any of the "charging intelligence" within it, to regulate & charge the battery?
USB-A sockets, typically regulate the voltage supply, but the "intelligence" required to charge the battery happens within the phone. I would have thought that Microsoft would have built in the same sort of charge controllers into the laptop, to protect the battery regarldless of the voltage supply. Keen to hear any thoughts you have on this. Cheers

@@scannable_io No, that's not what it means. You'll need a PD charger. Lots of 12V options available. I use some Panel mount PD chargers in my camp set-up.

Are you talking about the big screen Surface Studio 2? It does not have a battery. You. could run it from an inverter in your motor home though.

Hi, really need your advice. I’d like to find a usb c hub that i can connect to a usb c monitor but also connect the hub to a wall charger to power my surface pro 7. I only could find hubs like that but with usb c thunderbolt. I could’nt find a hub (to connect to a monitor also to power the sp7) that is compatible with the usb c 3.1 gen 2 on the surface pro 7. Do you know any hubs like this other than the surface dock 2?

Most cables work. You'll see some that are specifically rated for PD charging and some that have 5A on the plugs.

Does it mention anything about PD charging? If it can output more than 30W there is a good chance it will charge the Surface. It will work as a dock in any case.

Why are Microsoft saying that it will charge with these particular specs?
JB Hi-Fi sold me a USB-C to surface cable and a 30W Cygnett PD which didn't work and they refused to give me a refund and made me buy the 60W PD Charger which still doesn't work. The light goes on but is dim and does not charge even when Surface Pro is at 60%. The cable is new but I noticed that it says 15V/3A power and also shows my 60W PD as being a recommendation for this cable to charge this Surface Pro6. But nope, still nothing. I'm getting annoyed with businesses giving me the wrong info or wrong items., and I can't afford to keep outlaying money because they are giving me incorrect itmes and not taking responsibnilty when they are Tech savy shops. Any help would be immensley appreciated.

Surface will charge on a PD charger from 18w up (30w recommended), so 40w is fine, as long as it's a PD compliant charger.
I'm hoping to create a similar "single cable" setup so I won't hv to use the Surface Connect Port like what u did there in the vid, but unfortunately my monitor does NOT hv a USB-C PD port. Is it possible to connect an HDMI cable from my monitor to a USB-C hub with PD, then hv a PD charging source connect to the USB-C hub which then subsequently charges my Surface Pro 7 via its USB-C port AND simultaneously projects the image on the monitor? If so are there any product recommendations?
Yes, that scenario is possible. I can't recommend a specific product for you but most USB-C docks would do this.

Whoa, yea that's not right! You either have a battery problem or you have something running in the background that is consuming an enormous amount of power! The i7 is a 15W processor, and the battery is 43Wh. In order to achieve a 90 minute rundown the device would have to be operating at its absolute maximum performance constantly.

@@kaiwerk look for Battery Wear using the free version of Battery Bar Pro. My battery is currently at 0.9% wear - which is not bad for a 1 year old battery. It should report a battery capacity around 43,000mWh.
Did you see any reports or products during your research charging the surface from v-lock or Anton-Bauer style batteries via the very common D-Tap plug? (basically an unregulated 14.4V LiPo user for video gear)? i am tempted to just get a cheap surface charge, and cut off the brick and replace it with a d-tap plug since the actual surface connector has a voltage reg inside...
Oh, don't do that! PD is a two way protocol. If you want to play, get a PD charging board for a couple of bucks and wire it up. Whatever you do, don't go power direct!

Like a battery pack? Look for one that supports PD charging at 30W or more. You'll need a decent sized battery of around 20,000mAh.

I have a Surface Pro 3 that will no longer charge. I also have a SP7 and three chargers, but none of them will work on it, although one came with it and all 3 work with my SP7 just fine. Microsoft suggested I get rid of the SP3 and buy a new one, but it works great, if I can get it charged. I think it is an issue with the charging port, so the little dongle idea won't work. Can you please tell me exactly what I need to charge directly through USB-C? Sorry for the long comment, but don't want to scrap a perfectly good SP3, just need an alternative to charging it through the on board charging port.
Your Surface Pro 3 does not have a USB C port, so you can't charge it that way. You would need to find a service company that can do a battery replacement on your Pro 3. It's tricky to do, but I believe that it is possible.

i have a surface book 3 (15 inch with nvidia gpu in the performance base), and i am able to charge it via usb c via the base (and upon testing, i can get charging to work with as little as 45W, and i can confirm the transfer of a full 100W from other usb c power sources), but i would ultimately like to be able to charge *just* the screen (ie when it is *not* connected to the keyboard) via usb c, but of course the usb c is in the base, not the screen, so i've been looking at these adapters for a while to hook into the screen to charge it via usb c. i have a couple of 100W usb c PD 3.0 chargers anyhow
my issue is: why is it that all these surface-connect-to-usb-c-adapter cables seem to only support 45W (15V@3A) charging? like... the OEM microsoft charging cable supports 8A, and the usb pd 3.0 standard charging cables support up to 5A (and you get 100W via 20V), but everywhere i've read, all these adapters support is up to 45W due to low amperage and wattage. is that right? am i always going to be limited to 45W when i use these adapters, despite being able to get 100W usb c pd charging via the base? or, is there another adapter out there (surface connect to usb c) that transmits more than just 45W?
Interesting. I had not heard of or noticed a limit on those adapters. Seems strange as the Surface Book charger puts 100W through surface connect. I'd contact J-Go Tech to ask about thier adapter.

This will work with my Surface pro 7 right? I went and bought an 18w charging block that came with a USB C to C cable and plugged it in. Minimum requirement, but I wasn't sure which surface pro this was for since you said itd work for em all
If the charger supports the PD standard then it will work. 18W is on the lowest end of PD charging. It would only charge when the Surface is off.

I was looking at microsoft's website, and for a surface 7 65W USB C is recommended(same as the magnetic charger).
That's a good recommendation. My Xiaomi PD battery pack does 45W charging, which charges the pro 7 just fine. A little slower than a 65W charger.

Hi, i have a SP3 and wondering about using an excisting powerbank it has PD 3.0 and 18W, would the difference between the PD version be a problem?

PD 3.0 is not a thing sorry. Do you mean QC 3.0? If so, it will not work. If it is PD 2.0, then 18W is too low to use practically. It would charge when off, but not when the device is in use. You can tell if your power bank is not a PD charger if it does not have a USB-C port onboard. If there is only USB-A or Micro-USB ports then it is not an PD charger.

If it a Surface Book 2 or 3 and it has a USB-C port then yes, you can use a PD charger to charge it. Best to get the highest watt PD charger you can get as the Book has a BIG battery!

The power requirements in this video state a minimum of 18W with PD. 30W or more is really ideal. Your powerbank cannot charge a Surface. It would even be very slow to charge a mobile phone.

I have a question as someone that doesn't know anything about laptops really: My surface pro 7 charger frayed at the end as most chargers do due to it moving weird and bending over time, so the magnetic connection end of the charger is a mess of wires sticking out of the end of the plastic and won't charge unless in very specific angles (just like what happens with phone chargers), and I noticed a usb port on the power brick itself. So, I naturally assumed maybe a usb to usb-c cable could be plugged into the power brick that the laptop came with, and then plug into my computer to charge. I mean, my laptop charged using a nintendo switch charger, so it made sense to me! However, I got a usb to usb-c cable, plugged it in no problem, but suddenly I'm getting this notification that the PC isn't charging, and to use the recommended charger. Why is this, and how can I somehow make it work? The only difference in the charger is that I plugged a usb to usb-c cord into the power brick instead of using the attached magnetic connection charger cord since that doesn't seem to work anymore, even tho the brick itself works fine and the cord that connects the brick to the wall works fine as well! I'm so confused :(
The USB Port on the brick is for charging things like phones. A USB-A port cannot supply the required power. You would need a USB-C PD charger with at least 30W or a new Surface charger. Either option will work.
Hi! I have a Surface 3 Tablet for my work. The battery doesn’t last all day and my company won’t buy me a portable battery. So far the least expensive one I can find that will work is the ZMI Powerpack but I don’t want to shell out $90 for my part time job. Do you know of anything under $50? Before answering, can you clarify if you have Surface 3 (has a Mini USB Port) or a Surface Pro 3 - with the proprietary Surface Connect charging port?

Ok, I'll assume that you have a Surface Pro 3. Check on the J-Go Tech website for a compatibility, but it looks like a 45 Watt PD charger (or battery) and their cable will do the job. Note that it must be a USB PD compatible charger, and it must be able to deliver 36W or 45W on the USB-C Port.

Is there a way to charge a surface ( not a pro or anything just a plain surface) through either of the USB ports? my POS surface will not charge through the actual connector meant to charge, I have tried switching chargers with a known good on but it doesn't work so I was hoping I could charge it through one of the USB ports
There is no plain surface, so let's try and figure out what you have - Surface Book, Laptop, Pro or Go. When you say USB ports - how many and what type do you have? USB-A and or USB-C?
Take a l look inside the charging port and make sure there's nothing blocking it. They do like to pick up small metal debris (like stray staples) due to the magnets. That's the only thing that I can think of that will stop it charging. It's far more common that the chargers get damaged. The charging connector can be a little fragile, but you have done well in eliminating that as the cause.

@@jonsmith7667 Right got it, so sounds like the first generation Surface Laptop with USB-A and a Mini Display Port. So USB-A does not have device charging capability in the standard at all. So there is no way to charge in through a USB-A port. You'll need to address the charger issues. The Surface Laptop 3 and 4 have USB-C instead of the mini Display Port, so they can be charged via USB-C using the PD standard as well as the proprietary Surface Connect charge port.

I think you can use any charger with usb port. I´ve used a Lenovo laptop charger ( usb-c ) 65W to charge my Microsoft Laptop 3 ( intel ) and it works great. If youy own one, you should be able to use it.
Your laptop charger is USB-C PD capable. But many USB-C chargers are not. For example, most phone chargers are not PD capable. And only USB-C chargers can do PD. A charger with a USB A port will not charge a Surface.

hello - thanks for the video. Have you managed to fast charge via USB C using any of your adapters? According to Microsoft fast charging should be possible as long the charger is the same wattage as the original charger or higher - my surface charger is 65W so I bought a 66W QC 3.0 charger - it charges via USB but it's a lot slower, my cable is rated 100W so that should be ok. Any ideas? Thanks
The QC 3.0 standard will not charge the Surface. If your charger is working, then it must also support the PD standard. So if it's charging slowly then the charger may have a lower PD rating - possibly 18w or 25w. You'll need to check the specs of your charger. It is possible to fast charge Surface with a PD charger that delivers a higher wattage.
@@oztabletpc Thanks for the reply. Apologies it is also PD 3.0 (what a minefield USB standards are) and the port is also rated 66w, I had nothing else plugged in. After doing a bit more testing last night, it appears that both the standard charger and USB C vary wildly in charge rates (and estimated time to full). I think I'll need to do a full discharge and recharge with each to test it properly. Thanks again for confirming 👍
No problem, this makes more sense. A 66W PD charger should do the job in around 2 hours. The Surface will manage the charge rate according to its needs. Usually it will start out fast charging, and then slow down for the last bit of charge and cell balancing.

You can get a USB-C PD capable wall charger. Most original smartphone chargers are not PD capable unfortunately. You'll need to get a specific PD charger. PD chargers will charge your smartphone though.

When you say "this powerbank", what do you mean? If it's the Xiaomi, can you check if it's genuine? I've been caught out with knock off Xiaomi products before. It's hard to believe that there are fake versions of cheap Xiaomi products... But there are!
@@oztabletpc Xiaomi. This is my 5th Xiaomi powerbank and I checked the authenticity as soon as I received them. I think the culprit is the cheap low quality cables.

I purchased the J-Go charger cable that hooks up to a double ended C male cable with my PD, which is an Anker. It doesn't even light up the led indicator light on the plug, even on more battery than performance mode!! I'm disgruntled. purchased a small C adapter plug with a female C port that broke less than 5 minutes in. Rewatched your video here and purchased from J-Go, the C to Surface dongle but it should still work. I'm very frustrated. ( Saw their bit about if the PD is =/> original source as well.

Not sure what the issue is for you. I charge my Pro 7 from USB-C to USB-C cables all the time. Also use the J-Go Tech USB-C male to Surface Connect quite a lot with a J-Go wall charger, Xiaomi battery pack (PD) and a Baseaus Car charger. Have you tried different cables? Worth reaching out to J-Go Tech too, they know there stuff!
I use my 25w Samsung charger. It's slow, but gets the trick done, but it limits the CPU to 25w, so it's never draining while plugged.

For Pro 8, you need a USB-C to USB-C cable. I like to have a USB-C to Surface plug handy as I sometimes use both USB-C ports for other things (webcam and display for example). The USB-C to Surface cable allows me to do that and charge at the same time.

It's safe, but I'd guess that it won't charge. It won't be PD rated.

Does the dock offer PD charging? If so, then you're good to go no matter what brand. Surface will take the charge it needs from the power source. PD chargers can offer up to 100W. The point of the standard is that the device communicates with the charger to negotiate the voltage and output.

The Dell site doesn't say much, but looking at some other sites it appears that it does PD charging up to 130 Watts. That's plenty of charge for the surface Pro and it's the right standard.

@@kunstdontfollow8011 No, USB-C to USB-C Is not enough. It must be offer the PD protocol at 30W or above. If it does not specify PD in the product details, then its not likely to do the job. Check Amazon or eBay for car chargers that do PD. There are plenty and they are relatively inexpensive.

No it doesn't appear to be a PD charger. PD charging can only run over a USB-C to USB-C cable. It looks like One Plus is using the SuperVOOC standard which is not PD.

Check the cables. Not all USB-C cables are up to the job. And 18w would only charge when it's off. 30w + is recommended.
How does the unbranded ones compare to the j-go one? All your other videos just keep saying how poorly its made and not how it performs

As a kid that was the spot to go to on Fridays after school...when I hit 4th grade I finally got permission to go with my best friend as it was on the way biking to her house from mine. And now there's the only one in Burbank and it's fun seeing the vintage cars when they come by and hang out once a month.

I am so pleased about that because my SB2 laptop adaptor is getting a bit suspect and I don't want to spend a lot of money buying the proprietary MS replacement. Also with the USB C option I will be able to use a powerbank asong as I can get one with the required power delivery 60w (or more) USB C output.
I am off grid so I can charge the power bank when the sun shines and know I have a few days laptop use (with a large capacity powerbank) over those weeks in winter when solar is not guaranteed. So the USB C charging option is going to take the worry out of my working from home.
@@maxineamon yeah, great idea. It's great to have USB charging for all of that. There are lots of good PD chargers for 240/110v and 12/24v power setups.

From Pro 3 - 6 you will need the USB to Surface Connect cable. You can use that with any of the Surface models except Pro 1 or 2 and Surface RT models.

Unfortunately not. There was a Surface Connect to USB-C adapter, but they discontinued it when all Surfaces got USB-C ports. I know of a company that was investigating making one, but I haven't seen any news on that yet.

i was gonna recommend the ZMI PowerPack 20K Pro 65W.. it has great functionality for that price and it can still charge mostly surface go 2 or switch console even all its usb ports are used,,
65W is plenty of power! Great choice.

1.5A is probably not ideal for charging Surface. You would be on the edge of the limits. It might work, but a higher rated cable is probably better.

Currently, I use a Microsoft surface laptop go and I am wanting to charge it with type-c. I had a question if anyone would care to answer. What is the maximum wattage you can charge a Microsoft surface laptop go at? I have some high-wattage type-c chargers that might accomplish this but, I do not want to damage my laptop. If anyone would care to answer this question I would appreciate it.
There is no upper limit. The Surface will tell the charger how much power it can accept. And this varies as the charge progresses.

Type-c charging seems to be a much better option for me. I did have one other question if you wouldn't mind. I have two 100w super VOOC chargers with type A outputs. Can you use a male type A to type c female adapter and make it work? Please let me know when your next response. I'd appreciate it.

Thank you very much for getting back to me. I discovered that a few days ago. As it turns out, when oneplus and oppo formerly merged op took on the super vooc. They used to use their own proprietary technology which they called warp charging. Fortunately, I have a couple of they're 65 w warp chargers. They are type c and provide PD charging and everything is goingwell. They charge my surface perfectly. Thank you for getting back to me.
