Yup, this car has the very last naturally aspirated V6 in the compact luxury sedan segment. Buy one of these while you can, because who knows what Lexus will do in the coming years. We're completely unsure if Lexus will even keep this car in the lineup, or go the electric route for the next generation.

If you're a driver, all of those tech features are just to take your mind away from the obvious which is probably an unreliable drivetrain. I'll take Lexus reliability on driving performance over any of the tech gadgets that people won't probably use, especially if it's loaded with safety features, taking away a lot of the manual control from the driver.
The only gripe I don't like about the entertainment system is that it's not wireless, but you can always get a Carplaylink, connect it to USB port and voilla you have wireless Apple Carplay. Just a $90 aftermarket upgrade well worth it.

In my book it's a classic for those who love the driving experience and don't need unreliable over engineered modern tech. This has enough new tech to please those that come from a 2007 TL-S or old IS. I love this car and will pick one up to keep as a classic V6 sugar rush. Thanks for the great review. I own a refreshed IS 350 F sport with RWD and I definitely agree that the new exterior is gorgeous and the red interior is to die for. In addition, the luxury aspects are wonderful - having had German sport sedans, hatchbacks prior - the Lexus is definitely superior in the luxury department and miles just melt away on long distance drives (and commuting is very comfortable too). The stereo is excellent and the sound from the NA V6 is way better than the turbo 4s. Infotainment/technology wise I am very pleased overall. In the realm of performance - you hit it on the nose when you said acceleration is great above a certain redline - but up to that it can be a bit sluggish. This is especially true when at a full stop or from very low speeds to highway speeds - even in Sport+. In addition, nailing the throttle usually produces instability and nose wagging (even with the dynamic handling package). It is very stable on long curves at high speeds but abruptly throwing it into a corner produces way too much tail out action - especially compared to my German cars from prior (in same price range). All this would still be totally ok if not for the fact that the front end is so low that scraping it on my garage entrance required me to adjust to backwards in parking- of which I am definitely not a fan. I parked next to a current 911 at a mall the other day and its front bumper was higher! Overall, still a good car with great reliability for the time I have had it of about two years. In addition, trying to test drive an IS 500 to see if it is worth it has been next to impossible with my local Lexus dealers - maybe that will improve with time.

We finally just picked up ours (my wife’s car), after test, driving TLX type S, Audi S4 I in genesis G 70. We want to keep this car for at least eight years so we did end up on the Lexus IS. Instead of the 350 F, wind up going with the 300 AWD. Pretty much the same 0 to 60 time and quarter-mile time, but in Canada for a much lower price than the 350 F. With that savings, we did add the optional Lexus Sport exhaust, and it sounds awesome. We picked up the car last weekend, F sport 2 pkg, and did a ceramic tint, and we just all loving the look, especially with the lights at night. Stereo systems barely OK, but we’re always looking at the car, just opening up the garage door and taking a peek. Still have to put on some kilometers for the braking period, and then we can give it a shot giving it a rip.

Small correction - this is acfually a 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 - (actually a very old engine that started in the '06 IS350s /'07 GS 350s) longitudinally mounted with more performance and premium fuel is actually required for this motor.
2GR-FKS is the descendent of the 2GR-FE V6. They're also both 3.5L of displacement but they're laterally mounted (FWD) and are found in the ES 350, previous Gen RX 350 and the Camry/Highlander V6 - regular fuel is all it needs. - (Former employee at a Lexus dealer)

This car is an absolute master class in how to style a compact sports sedan, BMW could learn a thing or two from the Lexus chief stylist. I even like the refreshed interior with the round vents that have symmetry with the analog clock, and even the start button, mirror adjustment control...not to mention the sweet motorized digital tach/speedo. I even like the retro 90's thing carrying the seat color into the dash, especially since they didnt overdo it with red everything. The only thing I wish is for a slightly less wide center stack/console. Just shaving 3/4 of an inch off the width would be great. Other than that, this car is old school in good way..especially since the touchpad thing is now optional. Having said all that, this car seems fully loaded (BBS wheels, heated steering wheel and Mark Levinson sound) yet doesnt have the larger touchscreen? Odd thing to cheap out on after checking most other option boxes. $55k for this (assuming you can find an MSRP Lexus dealer) is a lot of money, but in a world where you can get the new Prius Prime up to $40k, I'd say this thing is a bargain.

@@colorsafebleach5381 Yeah that's what I think. Lexus designs are pretty timeless in my opinion~ It would be nice for Lexus to make more updates to the IS right now, but I'm sure they will do that in the future. Also to replace that 6-speed automatic, but honestly, 6 gears is still a perfect amount of gears. Great gear spacing, and not too many gears to hunt for. 6-speed transmissions are probably the best partner for most cars and a good balance between fuel economy and overall acceleration. Lexus does a good 6-speed.

Something that bothers me is that Lexus and Infiniti could truly have good sales if they would give the IS and Q50 some TLC they’re both reliable cars great power and the younger demographic don’t want crossover just yet or at all at that all they need to do is improve the transmission and infotainment and I’m sure they’ll sell more

What would be the best amount of gears to maximize the engine output for this lexus? I am thinking either 6 or 8 gears but no more than that. Seems like anytime transmissions have 10 hears, the performance of the engine is not optimized

    • @lexuslfa4739

The 6 speed is the same as the 8 speed, the only difference is the 8 speed has 2 extra over drives, the 10 is a newer version of both but with 4 extra overdrivers otherwise the ratios are pretty similar

Just drove both the IS350awd and the IS500. As an Infiniti owner this thing is far more impressive than the Infiniti. The huge take away is the port and direct injection so intake valve deposit is gone and Lexus offers an aftermarket sport exhaust. I’m looking for an extremely reliable no brainer vehicle that is fun to drive. I think the 6 speed on the IS350 holds it back but the car handled far better than I expected and had more leg room for me. Local dealer has 4 350 leftover and 1 500. I’m leaning to the 350 with the awd. Using premium gas but port injection will hold back some fuel economy but I will take it. The car is simply amazing. It’s not the biggest but for the money, won’t leave me hanging.

One aspect about Toyota/Lexus that people must understand. They do not follow the conventional wisdom of the other manufacturers. Rather than constantly redesign and use new and unproven technology they will use proven and refined designs and technology.
Their customers love the reliability and the tried and true styling.

Soooo long in the tooth. This IS haven't changed much since 2006! The engine back then made 306hp so essentially carried over for 17 years. I own the original 2002 Lexus IS300 which is wonderful and much sought after. It was available with a MANUAL which made all the difference.
