    Yosemite, a great place to take photos and is on my bucket list. Kudos to you going with the 4x5, probably too many camera adjustments for me. I purchased a Pentax 645 a few months ago and using Pentax 6x7 lenses on it. I am working on my 3rd roll of film. I am trying to resist the urge to purchase a Pentax 6x7 camera before inflation drives the prices even higher.

    I like LF exactly because of how much control there is. You can also contact print the images in the darkroom without an enlarger.
    I know everyone (rightly) associates Yosemite with Ansel Adams but everyone should check out the work of Carleton Watkins. His wet plate images, taken with the help of a portable darkroom, several mules, and a couple hundred glass plates and volatile liquids, helped inspire the creation of the park.

    The best design for moving the front standard is the one on the Linhof Technika and the British MPP Technical field cameras. Two push buttons release front standard to slide along two precision dovetails. My Wista Field DX uses two locks and two runners along slots to achieve the same. Both of these alternatives are much more costly to implement. Perhaps Intrepid could allow the front standard to slide along a precut slot with the thumb screw using a T bolt to tighten the standard, so long as the rigidity of the set up was not compromised.

    • @BadFlashes
      @BadFlashes  2 года назад

      That’s a good thought for sure! I one day dream of a setup like you describe. That would make the process easier … well set up anyways

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 2 года назад

      @@BadFlashes The only caveat with my MPP MKVII ( Linhof is way out of my financial league ), is that it is made of solid Aluminium and therefore weights a Ton, as we say in England ( about 8.5 lbs to be more exact ), so they are not as portable or hiking friendly as an Intrepid or a Wista field DX. Keep up the good work with LF camera. They are a different world from the shoot two hundred frames maybe one would fit the bill, of the digital world.

    Well well well. Go to vinyl? I have started buying them more and more recently. Ohhh nice COC..Camera. The Point Reyes shot is so crispy, I love it! Mustard is your color btw. I like that hat. I think I would like to be a hat boy from time to time but then my head is so big, most hats don't fit. Size does matter...in film. Someday, I will try out 4x5, we will see. Intimidating for sure. Backpack AD? oh Squarespace. Love SquareSpace. Need to revamp my site really. Coffee, that is what I need right now on this Thursday afternoon. Whats the shutter times on some of these shots. Do they take more light/time than a 35mm or 120? 99 degree weather, wow Cali is nice right now. It's rainy and cold here in Kansas. Typical though. That black and white shot of the shack deal is so good. Very nice(chefs kiss). That portrait, wow. The DOF. Nothing negative about that negative size. WOW I need Short hand for these comment stories.

    Your comment about carrying all your gear and it's weight brought back a memory from Ansel Adams' autobiography about a summer in Yosemite in the early 20th century when he apparently succeeded in getting his father to send the money to buy a burro to carry his stuff as he hiked around the park taking pictures. His outfit was likely much heavier than ours, including gear for camping as well as the heavy glass photographic plates he used back then, but my photography backpack was about 40 lbs when I was in my 40s and early 50s and I routinely carried it all day (admittedly over much flatter ground. The Midwest is as short of mountains as it is oceans.) Anyway, one time my wife, curious about what I was doing all weekend, came along to help. A word of advice: talking your partner into playing the part of your luggage carrier is apparently a Bad Idea. Your mileage may vary.

    Rad! Great shots and that shed one esp is imo a banger.
    They are constructing my Intrepid 4x5 as we speak. Nervous jump right into the deep end with this haha, but hey I look forward to trying it out and seeing what the fuss is all about!! I even pre-ordered the Lomo Graflock back so I get to have some instant film fun and I will definitely order a roll back at some point so I can practice with cheaper 120 film.....My biggest concern is whether I will actually have the energy to take it out and go somewhere with it lol, but that's on me not the poor camera. Another fun part of large format is picking lenses...literally like a century of lenses exist that you could use and that entices the collector in me (and makes my wallet cry).
    Someday when I get used to this I will want to splurge on like a nice Chamonix ....someday if I get the $$$. (My dream would be the 5x7 Chamonix with a reducer back for 4x5. Would make it awesome to shoot 6x17 panos as well Nick Carver style)

      There are some beautiful lenses… I’m on a trip with my LF now and I want to collect so many lenses now for different types of shots. Oh wow. You will love using it. Trust me!!!!
      And yeah someday I feel ya… chamonix would be so lovely…. Someday 😝

    @andyvan5692 2 года назад +1

    I do get what you are saying, about price, BUT this style of camera, like Ebony, shan-hao, Stenopeika, and some others don't have detents or geared movements, meaning they are hard to set and keep at zero position, esp. the rear, which can cause a lot of heartache as this can wreck the perspective, or distort the image, and esp. if just a casual touch can let it creep a bit (as the locking isn't a tight fit); but conversely a Linhof, cambo (monorail), or Toyo has detents, so when you get to zero, you FEEL it, and the locks are solid, so no in-advertant movements are applied, you have to "shift" it deliberately and this, to my thinking gives a level of confidence, that if "all is at zero" while you learn things, less can go 'wrong' and the more successful the first steps, the more likely you will enjoy shooting, and Less likely to revert back to smaller film or digital mediums.

    • @BadFlashes

  • @RodUSMC75

    The only way to get around moving the front standard when changing lenses is to move from a field camera to a monorail. I have a horseman45 that I can breakdown pretty easy in a backpack for hiking, it just a a little more set up involved.

    • @BadFlashes
      @BadFlashes  2 года назад +1

      There are a few cameras out there that work on smaller rail type systems that are in the same shape as a field camera they were just more expensive than the intrepid. lol someday I think I’ll move to one of those.

    Caleb, I enjoy your videos but not sure what you were trying to do here. If you don't learn how to operate a View Camera it's a complete waste of money. I couldn't discern if you were "dumbing it down" or didn't know wtf you were doing. At least you had a tripod that was appropriate. Maybe you could show Jason yours and tell him he needs one 50% bigger/heavier for the 8x10 he inexplicably acquired. By the way, what's up with the boat. Is it a pilgrimage or some rite of passage?
    Don't understand you and J"s fascination with it. Why don't you stay closer to home and maybe take pictures of swimming pools like he does. Enjoyed the off camera female assisting with shot selection. Really not trying to dump on you, but I hope someone after watching this, does not go and order an Intrepid without understanding what they are getting into. Aren't you too hyper for a View Camera anyway ? Oh, I forgot, loved the hat, but to complete the look you need a 50's Pontiac wagon with a platform on the roof ;)
