    Wow! Another Quality Video from Marlene, insightful, thank You. I have a ? . I have the 12-60 Leica and 25mm and the 45mm which do you recommend for youtube videos to get bokeh in the background of a normal size bedroom size. Thanks, Marlene. I believe we are all very grateful for the time and effort it takes to make there. Happy Thanks Giving Marlene

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Neo :) If it's a talking head type, try the 25mm first. I typically use my 12-35mm around the 25-35mm focal length, and I shoot at about f/4.0 in my videos. I don't worry about bokeh though. I worry more about audio, lighting and most importantly, content. But if you want to test it out, open up your aperture all the way. Just be careful that you are in focus! If your lens is open to f/2.0 or so you may fall out of focus if you move around at all. Also if the background is close to you, it won't be very much out of focus. So make sure you're a good 3-4 feet away from your background if possible. You'll have to test for exact distances. FYI, in my RUclips videos I'm sitting about 4 feet in front of my camera, and less than a foot in front of my backdrop. Mostly because I have a very small space to work in. Notice in my close ups of the camera though, that I have really good bokeh? This is because I'm close to my subject. Because proximity to subject adds to bokeh effect. As does f/stop and focal length. Test it out with photos first. If you get bokeh in your photos, you'll get in in your videos too. Hope that helps. p.s. in Canada we have our turkey the second Monday of October. That way the weather is better ;) Enjoy your holiday weekend.

      Marlene, I also wanted to ask you what you think of the 10-25 1.7 Leica lens at $1800. I did want it but fo me it is too BIG in size and price. It is massive from what I have seen. I may try to get the 15mm 1.7 Summilux instead for video, not sure yet need to do more research.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 года назад

      @@NeoDon1 Ya, that 10-25 is too big for me too, in both price and stature. I do love my 15mm, but it's a smidge too wide for talking head videos. If you look at my video about the Godox Flash from October you'll see what I mean. ruclips.net/video/LsquIVG421k/видео.html My head is slightly distorted. I think for a 2-shot in a tight space, it would be fine. It's super sharp though, and great for my indoor skateboarding pics due to the speed, which I normally use my 7-14mm, but it's only f/4, so an outdoor lens.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 года назад

      Go with your 25mm. I think it will be perfect. Also you won't get the bokeh in the 15mm, as bokeh diminishes with shorter focal lengths.

      True you can do slow and fast motion video in editing as well, but not everyone is a video editor, or uses software that can do that. And I believe there are some benefits to doing it in the camera. But I'll let you look that up and decide what's best for your workflow. Cheers!

    • @HviteVinger

      In the normal modes the highest FPS you get is 60 in both 4K and 1080p, which can give you smooth slowmotion up to half speed on a 30 fps timeline. VFR gives you options for 120 and 180fps in 1080p. Which gives you even more headroom for slowmotion, up to 20% of real time. 👍 So, since you loose sound and it's manual focus only, VFR is mostly used for 1080p 120 and 180fps.

I encountered a problem right away when shooting video on the G9. The MOV file won't play in Windows 10 Movie Maker...which is odd because MOV files from my Pentax DSLR work just fine. This was shooting regular video but I assume the same will apply to VFR video. I had to download VLC media player to convert the files before I could do anything with them. Can you advise, is there a simple solution here?

The G9 will then only change f-stops automatically?

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 года назад +2

      VFR is "variable" the High Speed video option is just one speed. It can be 180fps at 1080p, or 60fps and 48fps if you're shooting in 4K. But yes VFR has more options.

  • @evenaicantfigurethisout
    @evenaicantfigurethisout 4 года назад

    What's the difference between using VFR and the traditional way of doing slomo viz. actually shooting at a higher frame rate then dropping it in to a timeline with a slower frame rate? Is the quality degraded when we do VFR? The channel hybrid shooter seemed to think so. I was wondering if the degradation is noticeable in real world usage

      VFR works for my purposes but I’m just a photographer who makes RUclips videos. I’m not a pro videographer nor pro video editor. Everyone needs to test this for themselves. I never rely on what others say or do especially with camera tech.

      The standard has to do with how you are going to edit your video clips together, and also how you are going to watch them. Are you in Europe or North America?There are different electrical standards so that will determine what you set your camera on. I'm in Canada and I use MP4 or MOV and I use 1920 x 1080 60p for my RUclips videos. Some people like to use 4K for videos. I don't need such large files myself, but it's handy if you have to crop into your video frames. So it's hard for me to tell you what is right for you. Hi Marlene, i'm a beginner in video recording and i'd like to know what's the differences between g9's VFR and high speed mode, please. Good channel, I have subscribed

      Hello Haddi. Welcome to my channel. The difference between high speed mode and VFR, is that the VFR has more choices, plus you can do slow motion and fast motion. High speed mode just has one setting. It produces a VERY Slow frame rate. I prefer the Variable Frame Rate options as sometimes I just want a little faster or a little slower. It's more fun to experiment with. I'm so happy they added it! I have a video all about the High Speed mode. Have you seen it? ruclips.net/video/RPPMFAo1VB8/видео.html

    So in effect if you want 120fps you will need to use 60fps VFR and then slow that 60fps down in post to say 24fps or 30 whatever you like? I find the 150fps slow motion a little too slow for my liking.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 года назад

      Depends on your original video format and frame rate, whether 4K or 1080p. Cycle through the options and you'll see the relationship. But this is all done in the camera, not in post. All of my sample clips came straight out of the camera with no change of speed.

      @@ImageMaven I think I will have to test it. It should work and mean the 120fps becomes more than just 50% slow mo. Will also have better image quality than the 180 and 150fps options if it works.

    How do you alter the speed of a video already captured with VFR on?

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 года назад

      You’d have to change the clip speed in your video editing software.

  • @Reyfox1

    The resulting video (whether fast or slow motion) is done in the camera? If you placed it on your timeline, it will automatically reflect the speed difference?

      Yes. The clips you see in my video have not been altered in editing.

    Hello Marlene, I echo the last comment regarding the G9 and your channel. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the latest firmware update, regarding recording formats. Given that there are now four recording formats, which one would you recommend for me ? When doing videos, I only record steam train videos, which I load up to my youtube channel and watch on my 49" 4k TV. I currently record in MP4 4k at 30fps, however, the new firmware gives me more options, in particular, 4k 10bit in MOV. At the end of the day, do you think there will be any noticeable difference in viewing quality between these formats ? I do not do video editing/grading, just straight out of the camera. It would also be useful, to take a still shot from the videos, of which MOV suggests would be the best option. Many thanks, Peter.

      Hi Peter, In your case, I'd definitely test out the three 4K modes available. If it was me I'd do a quick test first and see how the playback looks on your TV after uploading to RUclips. Then go from there. If you want to use VFR then choose one of those settings. It's likely you won't need the HLG settings as you are not editing the clips. To do the test pop your camera on a tripod, set it up outside somewhere and record your voice saying what format each clip is shot in, that way it's easier to remember. Keep in mind that RUclips adds compression. If you plug your camera directly into your TV via HDMI then you'd get the best results. But I assume you're sharing these files, so that's why you need them on RUclips. Hope that helps.

    I chose a frame rate that is marked as variable…the same as yours here… but variable frame rate remains greyed out. Are there any other items that need to be changed to choose VFR?

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Год назад

      Hi Ambrozia, Likely you don't have it set to a .MOV format. Doesn't work with MP4. For more info consult Page F-20 of the pdf owner's manual (back part of the manual with the firmware updates). It's a bit tricky and easy to forget that mov part. Hopefully this solves your problem.

      Just in case anyone has this problem, I had to search and search to find the issue. Make sure Filter Settings is set to OFF. Finally that change opened the ability to set the variable frame rate. Whew!

      I'm super happy with my Gordy's wrist strap. This is the closest I could find on amazon.com amzn.to/2WbAEBs But it's available from The Camera Store so if you're in Canada, you can order online from them directly. Gordy's has a website too. www.thecamerastore.com/6939-Gordys-Wrist-Strap-Lug-Mount.aspx

      @@droidzhunterz6861 It's hard to answer this question, as it also depends on the individual and what their needs are. But if you like a larger meatier camera that is top of line, get the G9. If you're looking for something slightly smaller and less expensive with less features, go for the G95. If you're a professional shooter, go for the G9. If you're a hobbyist the G95 might do just fine. I use an old small Lumix M4/3 GM5 and the Lumix G9, but honestly the GM5 is with me more than the big G9. Because it's for everyday use and if I'm on a holiday I'm going to take it because it's small and can hang around my neck like a piece of jewellery and I can still use both hands. Not the case with the G9. So which camera is best, yes the G9 of course, but that's my answer. Best camera I've ever owned.
