This was my patreon request! I had a feeling I had to rush home, now I know its because you uploaded. This is my favorite Violin Concerto, next to the ones by Bach, and nobody plays it as well as Janine. Astounding masterwork by Britten, very happy that you reacted to it. Thank you GIDI!

Another really great violin concerto is samuel barber's violin concerto. Although less on the more complex it is beautiful, the 1st movement is the highlight. I will say. And great vid. Janine rocks!!

The Britten violin concerto fits in well with the other modern, intense violin concertos of the time. The Shostakovich violin concerto no. 1 and Korngold violin concerto are also very tough to play and listen to but are beautiful and emotional in their own ways.

You are not wrong. This great concerto is THE concerto of vocal/opera-composer Britten, although I think that his Piano Concerto op. 13 is a bit underrated, a work much easier to follow, not that deep and somber but more on the light, sometimes wild and sometimes misterioso side. There is a great BBC performance as well with Grosevenor playing the piano. Good to see, you liked the Violin Concerto.

These videos are great man. Scriabin piano sonata no 5 is great. Also rach. rhapsody on a theme from Paganini. And last Rachmaninoff 4 pieces for piano. Or his nocturnes. Or his Moreaux de fantasie

Great reaction to one of my fave concertos. Full of character and atmosphere, it's one of Britten's early masterpieces, IMHO, written when he was only in his mid-20s.

You should listen to La valse triste by Cziffra the piece is based off a violin piece, I reckon Cziffras transcription of it is pretty good, hope you end up reacting to it.

At some point please listen to Medtner Piano Concerto No. 1. Criminally underrated composer and piece. Rachmaninoff said that he was one of the best composers of his time.

Before stearing Gidi towards the 2nd row of Composers, it might be better if he familiarizes himself with the 1st row.
Don't get me wrong I love Medtner, and the first Piano Concerto is awesome, but it can wait. The man has not even listend to both Brahms Concerti or all of Beethoven's. ;)

I was totally awestruck when I first heard this concerto. Among those written after 1920 it's 2nd only to Shostakovich's 1st Concerto, if you ask me.
And this is a VERY good performance. By all involved.

Wow, I think you had pretty much the same reaction as me when I first heard this piece haha. I heard it for the first time live at a concert performed by Augustin Hadelich (he was so good) and it was being performed in the first half before Holst's "The Planets" (which was the main piece I came to see). I found the piece hard to grasp, though I still enjoyed it from start to finish. It wasn't until months later I woke up one morning and the first movement's five-note motif was stuck in my head and I decided to give the piece a second listen. Now it's of my favourite violin concertos.

I did not find it hard to grasp at all. The structure is clear and it was written in the 1930's and that he and Shostakovich knew and admired each other.
That should be enough pointers to what is going on, especially when you know that Britten was a pacifist.
