Hi Guys.Welcome to my Reaction Channel Harribest Music Reaction.I love music, music has been my life from as long as i can remember. One of the best things that has ever happened to me is starting this Music reaction channel. It has made me new friends and made me explore music that i would normally have little access to.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.
This is a reaction video by me giving my constructive feedback on songs and the Artists . - Видеоклипы
This is the original song and the original singer/writer. Wouter "Wally" De Backer, better known by his stage name Gotye, is a Belgian-Australian multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. The name "Gotye" is a pronunciation respelling of "Gauthier", the French cognate of his Dutch given name "Wouter". That is why over a billion people watched this video; because it is the original. This came out in 2011; I'm surprised you never heard it; it was played constantly and many people tried to cover it. No one could do it justice like Gotye. :-)
I live on the gulf coast in MS and my husband literally works in a town called “Gautier” (next county over from where we live) and I never figured that out until I read your comment 🤦🏼♀️😂
He could be recognizing the many samples that make up this track. One of them is from a song that was released more than 70 years ago.
"Now you're just somebody that I used to know", I think was one of the most powerful lines ever. It's that weird transition between a long term relationship that doesn't work out, to basically becoming strangers again. Everyone knows that feeling, but this really put it into words. That line just really resonated with people.
Yep.OUCH! The music gives total pleasure to remembering getting your heart ripped out with a spoon. LOL!
Like not existing and being born, then dying. Same cycle
We all have someone we use to know but we're once together forever yrs
I love how this song has both perspectives, of how the male voice was not 100% in the relationship and how he was happy they broke up, and then you hear the female saying that he was "hung up on somebody that you used to know" it completely switches the song. Absolutely love it
This song was huge all over the world it won many awards and helped catapult both artists to international fame I was lucky to see them perform this live in sydney I heard Gotye wasnt even sure to release the song as it was so differant to his previous songs and that Kimba was a replacement singer after another high profile singer cancelled
Song never gets old
This song with such a simple beat, great singing with Kimbra and painting a picture of their relationship. At the end she’s erased from the picture. Great song!
Great song. I hadn't heard a contemporary song I liked for years--and then I heard this. Loved it. Knew my wife would too. Yep. She binge watched the accompanying video.
The video reflects the song perfectly. He never loved her when they were together he was still "hung up" on his previous relationship. Even though she was by his side she was still just apart of his background. Now they are no longer together she is moving on with her life and he is now fading into her background.
There is picture being painted. By him.
Then she comes along, and gives her side of the picture, and paints herself out of the picture.
This video reminds me of an 80's song called: 'Sledgehammer' Peter Gabriel, I think. Awesome reaction, new subscriber to the channel. ✌🏾
you put it perfectly. you cant live without it and you cant live with it
Great song ! .. Topped the charts all around the world and won many awards, including a Grammy for Best Song .. Gotye's pretty much a one-hit wonder, but if you're only going to have one big hit, this is certainly a good one to have .. For some reason, it can really make me emotional if I listen to it when I'm feeling a little down .. It just touches a nerve somewhere .. Nice reaction, Harri .. Wayne
Hardly a one hit wonder... he had other songs that charted too. Stepped away from performing to do other things in music.
He's from Belgium and grew up and lives in Australia. He's had a band called the Basics that has been hugely popular for years in Australia with #1 hits, before he released a solo album. I read that he has said the sudden national popularity of his song was great, but was not part of his goals as a musician. He was not comfortable being in the world wide public eye and decided to go back to his roots. Besides the Basics I believe he has another group and has created records labels, as well as writing for other popular Australian artists.
@@ThatguyPurps I said Gotye only had one BIG hit .. not that he didn't have some other much lower charting songs .. The term "One Hit Wonder" generally only refers to major charting songs.
@@jerickson725 I wasn't discussing Wally's work with The Basics .. I was only talking about Gotye .. And this song was his only major hit .. But thanks for your info on his previous work.
@@wayne_twentyfive He had a few big hits though, won numerous awards has platinum albums.... far from a one hit wonder.
Wow!
I thought that I was the only one that remembered this song, Harri.
I think it's the best pop song of the past decade or so.
Every Gotye song is a banger - hearts a mess, etc great film clips too. watch them ALL :-)
Your reference to Sting is so true. When I first heard it I thought it was a Police song that I'd somehow missed!
Reminds me of David Byrne of Talking Heads. Strange lyrics and weird melody but very catchy!
Kimbra, Settle Down
One of the super one hit wonders that they played ad museum but I still play over and over and over because it is so DAMN brilliant!
I like how at the end, she gradually fades out until she’s no longer part of the picture. Ie: Someone that he used to know
The video , first she was in the picture , then she was out of the picture as in somebody I used to know.
Good choice of song to react to.
The Video is very artistic.
I feel like this song hit popular culture at a time when "ghosting: someone was becoming a thing. Not the old idea of just not seeing someone anymore but it hit when they would also block you on all social medias as well.
Now Gotye is just somebody that we used to know.
You are the first reaction video I've seen on this song that made the same comment as I did. I heard Sting for sure in there!
Very artistic !
I first heard this on the Radio, I was convinced it was Sting singing.
Gotye, pronounced "gow · tee · ay" is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, on occasion, performs solo, or in this case a duet. His full-time gig is with the group "The Basics".
My analysis of the meaning of the song is different than most. There are 3 individuals depicted here. He and 2 women. He sings about the first one in his opening stanza. He told himself she was right for him but still felt lonely in her company and that's an ache he still feels to this day. He got addicted to the sadness of knowing it was going to end and when it did she promised they would still be friends. She lied, she just wanted to get away from him. Why? When they broke up she did everything she could to distance herself from him. He begins whining about how unfair and hurtful that was. He tries to comfort himself by saying he doesn't need that aggravation.
Enter girl number 2, Kimbra. She got involved with him after his breakup with girl number 1. At this point, they have already separated. Why? He kept screwing her over and making her believe it was her fault. This is probably the same reason girl number 1 dumped him. She didn't want to live with someone like that. On top of that, he said he could let his breakup with girl number 1 go and she "wouldn't catch him hung up on somebody that he used to know". She could read into the words he said that he obviously could not. So he dumped him too.
There is a parody of this song called "a Jedi that I used to know"
'Somebody that you used to blow' is also pretty funny
globaler Nr.1 HIt..im Radio 2 mal in ner Stunde und auch sonst überall gespielt... aber noch nie gehört... is klar..
A great song, but the video adds so much more.
While he is singing, he is also 'painting a picture' that he wants us to see/believe. However, when she is introduced, everything but her face is painted, which to me means that even he believes that he's not being completely honest.
Once she states her case, and the 'confrontation' ends, the paint slowly leaves her body, meaning that she has absolved herself - and it ends with her finally being completely 'out of the picture'.
Don’t know why this hit my feed, but I’m impressed by the song and this review…
A perfect classic song about a bitter dead-end relationship
I know there was a band called Walk Off The Earth did a cover of this with the five of the members of the band using one guitar at the same time. Also there is a very funny parody version of the Walk Off The Earth cover version by a RUclips channel called The Key Of Awesome.
The video might be called "Five People, One Guitar". I think it's really cool to watch, and, to be honest, I like it a lot better musically.
I'd never heard of this singer or song previously. It really resonated with me.
Gotye is a stage name. He is an Aussie of a Belgian (I think) heritage and the girl is Kimbra and she is a Kiwi.
Great song and video.
Kimbra has a pretty successful career of her own...ruclips.net/video/GONPmnfeP84/видео.html
@@williamosborne6866 She opened for David Byrne when I saw him in Wellington a few years ago.
The music is like a ten car collision on the freeway...you can't not get sucked in. You can't not look away. Oh. And by the way, reality check, GENIUS!
Some other good songs from the early 2010s: Foster the People “Pumped Up Kicks,” Nada Surf “Jules and Jim,” Swedish House Mafia “Don’t You Worry Child,” Shout Out Louds “Blue Ice,” and The Ducktails “Letter of Intent.”
The painting is from one of his mothers paintings. She also did his album cover
It's a great song and so so true!
My ex and I broke up years ago because both had a lack of emotional cooing skills, we were good together it we were also bad together. It was abusive or violence or anything like that, we just I think we're too immature, there was a lot of things, but we both really wanted to be with each other, but couldn't find a way to make it work.
We broke up, we pined for each other like hell... Oh, man the emotions in song are so true.
He basically decided that he wanted a total fresh start despite being the who would lead me on.
And this chorus epitomises how I feel even now, years later.
Love eh.... It's a rough rough emotion.
Leighton, if you're reading this wherever you are, i hope you're well and happy.
The chorus sounds like Sting...let it get there..lol
Its definitely a break up song but it's from the different Prospective of both parties involved...
Stung by Sting....yes.
Love ❤️ this song 🎧
Very painful great song
This track is so weird but still so good
Not my type of music normally but this is talent
As the paint goes away on her, she is no longer in the picture - symbolic
This is what we used to call "Artzy-Fartzy." Creative. Fascinating.
I always assumed that this was about a toxic relationship and that the girl finally got the courage to leave. That is why he still captured in the picture (i.e. in his old ways and destructive behavior) and she finally escapes from him controlling her life
Now I find everyone including the Grammys know this song but me. It is impressive. At first I dismissed it as somewhat silly but then POW. Turn things upside down! Oh, THAT someone!
Great Aussie song... love it...
Gotye is a Belgian born Australian. Kimbra is from New Zealand.
Gotye is considered to be a one-hit wonder, although a lot of his catalog is brilliant. He also created some videos that are difficult to get out of your mind. Here is an example: "Looking For An Easy Way Out" ruclips.net/video/mEpfyBOdKxU/видео.html
I had always enjoyed Somebody That I Used To Know so I recently decided (couple of weeks ago) to listen to his albums and I was surely impressed!
I definitely now don't see him as a one hit wonder, he is much more than that.
Cool video, nice song, great reaction! Now, since you are such a great, brave and daring music reactor you NEED to check out the cover of this song by a group called Walk Off The Earth! I guarantee you it is like nothing you have ever seen before!!!!!!!!! Give it a chance, Harri - you won't regret it!!
Another song is smoke and mirrors, my favourit
Hope you liked it.
Great song. Great reaction.
Worst breakup ever.
Glee did a version of this with a totally different take on it.
I don't know about the worst ever. I can think of some that ended with physical violence.
Check out his song - Hearts a Mess
Lessons in love.
When I broke up with guys I just left. The end.
Sent friends/employees to collect me things if at all.
I remember a guy in college practically stalking me, in my mind, asking don't you want your TV? Your CDs? (Early 90s)
I said if you can drag yourself to my doorstep to shout up to me about this you certainly could have brought my stuff. Otherwise, while a loss, I consider it an annoyance tax of breaking up.
Was that cold and rude? Or just what I learned from my parents break ups?
Honestly, this obsession with collecting your things in person is bizarre.
I love a detail some miss. The depiction of vulnerability in a relationship with the paint
Hearts a mess is another good Gotye song.
This is the original.
Pentatonix did a cover of it. He is Sting-ish but they take it to a whole 'nutha level.
Have you heard Pentatonix's version of this? It's quite different, but really good like most of their stuff.
Aussies and Kiwis can be quite quirky.
She is basically taking herself out of the picture
☮️💙💙💙🔥
Check out Lisa hannigan undertow live at different voices.
Other voices sorry.
So, is it because this song is aproching it's 10 year anniversary that all these reactors are checking this song out? Don't get me wrong, it is an amazing song and so different compared to most songs but it almost like it coming out for the first time again. I'm finding this resurgence fascinating.
The one time I would say the video gives more voice to the music than just the music. I don't like to give gender stuff and I know it can go either way, male or female, one is just so full of themselves and their own misery and the other is just screaming (verbally, silently, violently, or otherwise)....I always got it as the miscommunication or lack of communication or just the pain of any relationship that is one way in one person's view and another way in another person's view. The way it is musically so harmonious and at the same time the lyrics make you go...ugh. ouch. Painful. Their two voices and points of view make perfection. IRONIC RIGHT?
Both parties in the story had problems!
Powerful song. I heard it on the radio for weeks before I saw the video, which is a little distracting. Think they are from a European country, not sure which one. One of the few decent tracks from the last 20 years.
He’s Australian and she’s from New Zealand
And who is the female singer? She's as strong or stronger than Gotye. Their two voices almost just bite at each other during those ethereal harmonies towards the end.
Kimbra - She's from New Zealand.
you didnt have to cut me off. didnt have to act like we were nothing. nothing hurts worse than a relationship ending even if it was a long time coming.
I like this song because you get both sides. Turns out he was verbally abusive. So maybe he's a narcissist & she had to cut him off???
He was hung up on his an old ex-girlfriend, his new ex-girlfriend telling at him she couldn't live with his constant obsession, but he wasn't listening! Great Reaction!
He is playing the victim when he was cheating all along, why she said he was hung up on somebody HE used to know
Toxic
Not down with this piece of crap. Not buying it.
dont know how his voice or her voice sounds as they were both so highly changed by machine At any rate just another brake up tune which we alreay have more then enough of
So cant say I liked it but for what it was fair
Gotye to me sounds like Sting and Peter Gabriel had a boy together lol
