A sobering watch, informative and well presented.
A fine tribute to the 36th Ulster Division and all the heroes of the Battle of the Somme.

I've been to France & Belgium quite a few times over the years to visit the cemeteries & battlefields. The explanation of the opening hours of the Somme battle and the effect on the 36th Div is the most clear I have heard, the site chosen for the explanation was first class. Well done to all concerned.
    Faugh a ballagh.

Clive Higginson I totally agree. Standing on site there and having it explained like that helps bring a real understanding of what happened and what it was like there just over 100 years ago. Great explanation from Phil from 36th Ulster Division Tours.

    Phil Hamilton..
I've been on one of his tours as drum major of the William King Memorial flute band. Phil is the best... If he doesn't know about it then it didn't happen

As someone who has studied the Somme Battles for over 40 years, and walked just about every inch of the area, I found this guide to be reasonably knowledgeable, but not brilliant at getting his message across. He reminds me the late Richard Holmes who often stood with camera fixed on him while he waved is arms to left and right, saying the British Army came along this roa what road? And where was he?
This Tour Guide gave patchy information, not explaining fully their objective, then jumped back and forth between the 32nd Div and the 36th Div, before bringing in the 29th Div without any explanation as to why 36th Div troops were there, or what there role was.
I understand that such guides have to be keep their discussions short. but if he had done it step by step from one side to the other..........
No jumping-off points mentioned, no reminder that the BFL was "L"-shaped, but then he tells us that the infantry left their trenches before the off to gain some advantage - but it wasn'r on the LIne where he was standing, and he neglected to show us where.
I'm an ex-pat Ulsterman, and on thing li learnt in France and Flanders was to try and grasp local names, but thig has made no effort at all - in fact I have no idea what pronunciation he used for an Irish name - Connaught - it sounded gibberish to me. ST Pierre he calls St Peere; well those will help inform the tourists!!
I believe there may be a secnd part to this, but I don't think I'll be looking.

I have Always Admired The Orange Loyalist ,From The Time I First Heard Of The Great Sons Of Ulster Marching To The Somme ,How Brave And Honorable Of These Great Men To Volunteer As Cannon Fodder For The Empire That Has Always Treated Them As Toilet Paper,Necessary But Disposable. It Must Sicken Them After All The Sacrifices ,Nare a Cabinet Position Comes There Way Nor Even A Visit From The Sitting Pm At Election Time, I Do Believe They Know They Have Been Had,And To The Majority Of The Empire They Are Just Orange Paddys,How Sour The Dose They Must Keep Swallowing While They March..
