My yogurt is runny. Ran straight thru the cheesecloth. I had it layered. I wanted Greek yogurt. Any idea why it's so runny? Did I not wait long enough? I started 5:30pm and I put towel on at 11:30 pm. Strained it at 8am 🧐 thank you.
I've made about four batches so far. People need to know that after about that many batches the bacteria have played out by running out of food for them to eat (lactic acid) so when you use some from your last batch it won't have enough bacteria for the next batch. Time to get a new small carton of yogurt to use as a starter. The yogurt you make that comes out runny is still good and should be used to make smoothies. Every day I use my blender to put in one ripe banana, some frozen blue berries (Walmart has a good buy on them!) I add about a half quart of my runny yogurt and then add some 2% milk for volume (or sometimes nothing more) this gives me about three cups of smoothie that tastes great. Sometimes I use frozen sliced strawberries (also from Walmart) instead of the blue berries just for a change or if I'm running low on the blue berries. Zap it all on the blender and enjoy. Steps to make your yogurt gleaned from several videos: Use whole milk for the fat Gradually heat the milk in your crockpot monitoring the temp as it gradually heats to 180 degrees with an accurate thermometer which you should swish through the heating milk to get an accurate reading When it reaches 180 degrees, turn off the crockpot and UNPLUG it! Let it sit until the temp drops to about 115 degrees Take out about two cups of the warm milk and mix it in a separate bowl with the yogurt starter (either fresh new starter or some of your previous batch) Mix it well Pour it into the milk in the crockpot and again MIX IT WELL! Cover the crockpot with its lid Cover the ENTIRE crockpot with a THICK towel LEAVE IT OVER NIGHT OR AT LEAST 12 HOURS! Take the made yogurt and either strain it to remove the whey (save the whey and drink it or use it other ways..Google this) Ladle the new yogurt into QUART canning jars...close them with WHITE PLASTIC SCREW ON LIDS (Walmart also) Make sure the jars and lids are CLEAN AND STERILE! (Use hot water and soap to clean them or you will get mold) Put the jars in the lowest part of your refrigerator to keep cold. When you open the jars you may find a skin on the top of the yogurt. TAKE IT OFF AND DISPOSE OF IT! Enjoy your product.
Thank you. It seems we don't have to wait two hours to heat up to 180, just check w thermometer. Then cool to 110 degrees. Keep checking. Thank you again.
So, I got off work early yesterday and decided to give this a shot. I was highly skeptical but decided I would give it a shot before buying a 70.00 instapot, just for the yogurt function. Hi Dane! So glad your yogurt turned out well. MY CROCKPOT JUST DIED -- got a big crack from top to bottom. I'll have to save up for a new one. So sad, I LOVED that red crockpot! Thanks for watching and giving my recipe a try!
I have 2 types of cancer + lately type 2 diabetes so all my food must be organic ( plus easy to make bec I’m not a great cook ) . I LOVE YOUR EASY RECIPE !!! It comes out perfectly delicious. Thank you so very much .
I like to use sugar substitute and vanilla in mine but find if I just mix in some batches later it does the same, the rest I use as sour cream. Whole milk is best for protein but you can also add this to your batch later, so many possibilities.I only use 2 quarts of milk and I use ultra-pasteurized whole milk lactose free.
Not bad for a first timer. You will get much better results if you do not stir your cultured yogurt after the 9 hour period. Just put the crockpot I straight into your fridge. Since it is such a large quantity, do not touch it for at least 12 hours. After it has cooled and set, to make Greek yogurt, scoop out the amount you want and put it in a close mesh strainer, no coffee filter needed, but do it if you want to. Your result will be thicker, creamier regular yogurt, and super creamy Greek yogurt.
Thank you for your comment Cindy. I try to remember to put the recipes there, sometimes I forget, but I appreciate it when others do that too. So glad to have you here.
Excellent recipe temp after the 12 hour wait was still 85 degrees for Vanilla Greek yogurt add after you make the yogurt, strain, and are jarring it up Makes 1 Quart 1 tsp vanilla 4 tbs confectioners sugar ( or to taste 1 1/4 tsp Cinnamon
Hi Kim! I love Jesus too! Using skim milk, it seems to make less yogurt, but full fat milk may give you more. I usually get 1/2 gallon plus of strained thick Greek yogurt from a gallon of skim milk, but then I use the leftover whey in cooking, breads, oatmeal, etc. Some people add dry powdered milk to their mix before incubating to increase volume (less whey). I have not tried that. Thanks for watching and commenting, and have a super blessed day!
Oh how wonderful 😊 what an easy recipe for Greek yogurt. I love that you sweetened it with agave. Brilliant, delicious & healthy! Thank you for sharing sweet lady.
Can you believe that I ate Greek yogurt for the first time today and loved it. So I decided that I must find a recipe for it so that I could make it myself. And here you are with this amazingly simple recipe!! Thanks so much!
I cut a sheer curtain to the right size to strain my yogurt and then I've found my fav thing to add is a can of diced mango and strawberry jam, so yummy. I also bought some 6oz Babymoov babybols, the lids screw on and they are the perfect size for yogurt. I just put them in the frig and let my grandkids have free rein to them. thnx for sharing.
Thank you Jan! I just recently bought some powdered milk to try this and I was glad to see your comment! Thanks for viewing! With love from BanDana Gramma.
Thank you. I'm was so used to the Greek yogurt. Now that I know about whey and how important it is, I am definitely not buying any more of the'Greek' yogurt But I do like it thicker than what I've already made. Just made two batches in a Danvier yogurt maker. Plan to try the crockpot over the weekend. Will add the powdered milk to see if it improves the consistency!
I recently found your video about making Crockpot yogurt. Thanks for showing a very simple way yo produce a great product. I am in my 70s and had always heard how complicated it was to make homemade yogurt. This is great!
Hi Maxine. Thanks for watching and for you nice comment. Go ahead and make the yogurt and let me know how it turns out. I just made it again yesterday and it turned out great. With Love From BanDana Gramma
Omigosh, using coffee filters in place of cheese cloth is genius! It's something I already have in the kitchen and is perfectly biodegradable. Thank you!!
You're welcome! I recently ordered a large fine mesh stainless steel strainer that holds all of the yogurt/whey mixture. It works pretty well by itself, but sometimes I line it with a large coffee filter if some of the yogurt seeps through. I'll try to put the link here, saves time! I have no afilliation or sponsorship for this item, I just like it! www.amazon.com/dp/B06XGWS7JS?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Hello Ban Dana Gramma, just found your channel and I really like your video so I just subscribed 😀. Can't wait to try this recipe for the Greek Yogurt! Thank You for sharing with all of us! Have a blessed day 🙏💗🌹
Welcome Susanne, and thank you for subscribing. It was so kind of you to take the time and leave a comment. I just made more Greek yogurt this week, and it turned out great. I'm finding that sometimes I just need to let it set longer than I said in this video. My last one I left 18 hours and then strained it. Even with skim milk it was good! I love mixing mine with a bit of my homemade strawberry-lemon jam. Hope to see you commenting on more videos!
That's a great video. My slow cooker has a hot spot so doesn't work for yogurt. Have been making yogurt since the 70's and do everything by touch. Heat raw milk then cool to 107* add some of my last batch, mix, pour into quart jars put lids on, wrap in a blanket for 8 hrs. As for authentic Greek yogurt, that is what we do when we want to make more of a sour cream or crème fraiche consistency. Greek yogurt is where they strain the yogurt to remove more of the whey.
You're welcome! I've had many positive responses to this video, one of my most popular. Be sure to read the "pinned" comment with hints. Enjoy your super easy yogort! Thanks for watching. Please share the video with your friends social media, they will like it too!
I had originally watched the video you mentioned but when I saw you were also doing this on your channel I just had to watch. You are a doll! Love checking in once in awhile to see what is going on . I have started making my own soap. I have not checked to see if you have made any homemade soap. That also is a joy to make.
Marlayne Madison hi! Thanks for watching and for your kind words. I have made soap twice under the supervision of others. When the weather warms up, I plan to make some on my back screened porch. Wish me luck!
If you leave it straining longer, it gets thick enough to come off the towel cleanly. Then you end up adding more whey back in for the same consistency.
My sister Jody took an old beat up metal tray I got in a miscellaneous box at auction and did some One-stroke tole painting to make it beautiful for my kitchen. I love it! Thanks for watching Marilyn!
Living in Minnesota, the last three batches of Tupperware with oven lights never worked as it did in summer and spring, want to try this out. Thanks, BanDana Gramma! I'm pleased with the result, just made great yogurt👍
I first saw this yogurt making at “Simple Food Simple Life”. Then found your channel. I’m subscribed to both of you! My sister has so many allergies to food additives and dyes. I’m retired but she isn’t yet. So I told her as soon as I make a batch, I will share it with her. Now to make some granola to go in my bowls of yogurt in the morning! And maybe some m&m’s......shhhhh! God bless!!
This time around I used enough powered milk to make a half gallon of powered milk. I measured noting .. milk, time etc. The first time I opened it up from the oven it had not gelled at all. So 3 more hours and it was solid, not a bit of whey. none then and none ever in that batch. I tried it again, except a whole gallon and it was like not the same. I guess I need to keep trying, taking notes. Its like making twice the yogurt. The best part of this besides the ease of making it. Is having no brown layer on the bottom of part of the pan from heating it to fast. I stir it a lot on medium, Im not going to low temp. So this crockpot recipe is perfect!!
Crockpot wow! I’m loving already.👌🏽 listening🤔...ok.. I’m gonna run this twice to make sure I didn’t miss none thing. Thank you and .. crediting the content tuber was kind... 👍🏽.. I’m at my place most any time welcome❣️
WOW that is really cool I am going to have to try and make some ... and I keep meaning to tell you that pineapple dressing was out of this world so so good it will be a staple for holiday meals that we have ham for sure ;) ... Lots of Love as Always xox
Hii BanDana Gramma - thank you so much for sharing!! I can’t wait to make this! If I half the recipe, do I need to half the time or will it just be the same! Thank you again, all the way from NZ! ❤
Hi Rebekah! No, I wouldn't halve the time. In fact, depending on type of milk and culture, sometimes I let it sit longer, like 12-15 hours. Sending hugs all the way to NZ with love from BanDana Gramma ❤
Oh my gosh, I followed your recipe and the other lady’s vid. I strained most of it as you did. I had lots of liquid on top and I think it was because I peaked during the cool down period. Came out delicious.
I made the Greek yogurt, it was wonderful, it didn't have the vinegar taste that store bought plain Greek yogurt has. I will be making a lot more in the future!
Hello bandana grandma! It came out perfectly. Absolutely stoked about how easy this is! Had a case of nonfat boxed milk. Nice to do something healthy with it. Thank you thank you thank you! I've been telling my family it's easier than boiling an egg 😉
Great stuff!! I don't do it a lot but yogurt is my duty. I have not tried the crockpot yet but maybe I should!! I do like to strain mine for awhile and overnight sometimes to get that "greek style". Great video!! Thanks.... - Mike
Yes, I strained mine overnight in the fridge and even with skim milk it was SUPER thick! I think this one is a winner, as long as the crockpots are running true to settings.
Thank you for leaving your comment, Jean. I find it tastes great too! I'm so glad you tried it. Please share the video so others can learn how to make this super easy yogurt.
Well, you are just the cutest lady ever! Thanks so much for sharing this! I went to say hi to SimpleFood SimpleLife! Keep making videos because you are just a delight. You made me roll up my sleeves and make my first batch of homemade YOGURT!!! I love that I can make my own almond milk yogurt. I'm teaching my granddaughter how to do it!
Great video 👍🏻 very easy to follow instructions. Im always looking to save money. I think my grandchildren will love this. Thanks I'm going to check out the mentioned channel...
Thank you Shannon. The higher the fat content in the milk, the thicker the yogurt will be (even before straining). Letting it set 12 hours works best, 9 is minimum. Enjoy!
God Bless You hun, thanks for sharing this info/ DIY. I just started to look into making greek yogurt myself. I began to buy non-homogenized low pasteurized milk from a nearby farm. They make their own greek yogurt that they sell there for $4 a pint. It's amazing but the $ is a bit steep. So I started to look into making my own to see if it's easy & cheaper. This is pretty dang easy lol. Thanks 😉😊
So far all the reports have been good. I'm sure there is a crockpot out there that doesn't run correct temperatures, and that could be a problem, but so far, so good!
You're welcome! I'm so happy you came back to let me know! It also won't encourage others who may want to try the recipe. I so appreciate you coming by and hope you subscribe to a RUclips channel too.

Thank ou Tina. It is unfortunate that for some reason many subscribers get UNsubscribed for no apparent reason. Thank you for re-subscribing! I truly appreciate your comments, and thank you for watching!
Finally came here from Melissa and Alex's recommendation. I'm not visiting the grocery store much these days but I'll get a gallon of milk next trip so I can try this.
Hi I stopped by from Kate's to visit you're channel glad I did!! I hit all the buttons and bell I hope you do too Tyfs ❤ I'm soooo Looking forward to seeing more videos! Have a wonderful day 🥰
Please do! I've been enjoying it every single day and saving so much money over store bought. Each night I put a little from the batch in the fridge over a strainer and have thick Greek yogurt for the next day. Share the video with your friends -- they will love to know how to do this too!
TIPS: (1) Your crockpot must heat true to temperature. (2) whole milk will make thicker yogurt than skim milk. (3) You must strain your yogurt to get thick Greek-style yogurt. (4) Be sure the yogurt you use to inoculate your milk has ACTIVE LIVE CULTURES on label. (5) You may need to let it sit up to 12 hours for thickening. (6) If it doesn't turn into proper yogurt, you may have killed the culture. Don't give up, Do the test over using same milk and NEW inoculating culture. PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO!
BanDana Gramma You are so cute. Thank you
What temperature is "True Temperature"? Your instructions say set crock pot to low. Do I need to insure a certain actual temperature? Not clear... Thanks.
People need to know that after about that many batches the bacteria have played out
by running out of food for them to eat (lactic acid)
so when you use some from your last batch it won't have enough bacteria for the next batch.
Time to get a new small carton of yogurt to use as a starter.
The yogurt you make that comes out runny is still good and should be used to make smoothies.
Every day I use my blender to put in one ripe banana, some frozen blue berries (Walmart has a good buy on them!)
I add about a half quart of my runny yogurt and then add some 2% milk for volume (or sometimes nothing more)
this gives me about three cups of smoothie that tastes great.
Sometimes I use frozen sliced strawberries (also from Walmart) instead of the blue berries just for a change
or if I'm running low on the blue berries.
Zap it all on the blender and enjoy.
Steps to make your yogurt gleaned from several videos:
Use whole milk for the fat
Gradually heat the milk in your crockpot monitoring the temp as it gradually heats to 180 degrees
with an accurate thermometer which you should swish through the heating milk to get an accurate reading
When it reaches 180 degrees, turn off the crockpot and UNPLUG it!
Let it sit until the temp drops to about 115 degrees
Take out about two cups of the warm milk
and mix it in a separate bowl with the yogurt starter (either fresh new starter or some of your previous batch)
Mix it well
Pour it into the milk in the crockpot and again MIX IT WELL!
Cover the crockpot with its lid
Cover the ENTIRE crockpot with a THICK towel
LEAVE IT OVER NIGHT OR AT LEAST 12 HOURS!
Take the made yogurt and either strain it to remove the whey (save the whey and drink it or use it other ways..Google this)
Ladle the new yogurt into QUART canning jars...close them with WHITE PLASTIC SCREW ON LIDS (Walmart also)
Make sure the jars and lids are CLEAN AND STERILE! (Use hot water and soap to clean them or you will get mold)
Put the jars in the lowest part of your refrigerator to keep cold.
When you open the jars you may find a skin on the top of the yogurt. TAKE IT OFF AND DISPOSE OF IT!
Enjoy your product.
All great advice, Cedric, thank you for sharing!
Thank you. It seems we don't have to wait two hours to heat up to 180, just check w thermometer. Then cool to 110 degrees. Keep checking. Thank you again.
the skin on top is actually very healthy as fas as I know, it has antibacterial properties, cleanses the body.
Cedric Ward can’t you just save a little bit of your new yogurt in the freezer for the next batch?
So, I got off work early yesterday and decided to give this a shot. I was highly skeptical but decided I would give it a shot before buying a 70.00 instapot, just for the yogurt function. Was it you who said you wanted to make yogurt with raw milk? I'm not sure how it works with raw milk, never tried it.
great video. save so much money making your own
Thank you for the yogert lesson. Looks so good. ❤️🐾

Wow..that was great! Thank you. You make it so simple. I'm going to try it! Going to go for the greek style..
I love ya for making this video, BAnDAna Gramma! It is a great video and most helpful!
Thank you for your kind words! I continue to make my own yogurt this way. I hope you try it and love it, and share the video!
Just finnished a second batch, this one for my mom. It's straining now. Yet again, it turned out PERFECT! This is gonna become a weekly routine! 😁
This gives me such JOY to hear my videos are helping someone. God bless you and Mom and eat that yogurt in good health!
She looks like she loves her grand babies 😩💗
If you leave it straining longer, it gets thick enough to come off the towel cleanly. Then you end up adding more whey back in for the same consistency.
Love your straight to the chase ..not a lot of talking...and someone does/ likes Donna Dewberry
My sister Jody took an old beat up metal tray I got in a miscellaneous box at auction and did some One-stroke tole painting to make it beautiful for my kitchen. I love it! Thanks for watching Marilyn!
Beautiful job on the tray! What a treasure. Have an awesome day
Definitely going to try this! Thanks for sharing.
Living in Minnesota, the last three batches of Tupperware with oven lights never worked as it did in summer and spring, want to try this out. Thanks, BanDana Gramma!
I'm pleased with the result, just made great yogurt👍
So glad you liked the video and had good results with the yogurt in the crockpot! Thank you for being a part of my channel!
God bless!!
Hello pretty how are you doing and how is the weather over there.
Wow! I am impressed and need to try this
nice recipe. thanks for sharing
Crockpot wow! I’m loving already.👌🏽 listening🤔...ok.. I’m gonna run this twice to make sure I didn’t miss none thing. Thank you and .. crediting the content tuber was kind... 👍🏽.. I’m at my place most any time welcome❣️
Wow ! I keep making it, once a week. I’m enjoying it sooo much . Thank you 😊

Hi JoAnna! So glad you enjoyed this recipe! Thanks for coming back to comment.
I may just try this method! I made it in the past, but it was much more complicated!
Hi Cassidy! I remember you! I was very happy with this method. Just be sure you read the "tips" below to have best chance at success.
awesome video and love that it's so simple, thanks for sharing
omg thank you sooo much I did it it's so simple and the taste is great thank you
Hii BanDana Gramma - thank you so much for sharing!!
Hello sweetheart seen you on two family homestead and wanted to show some love!! I lobe yogurt!!!
Thank you Confidence Plus, and WELCOME!
Oh my gosh, I followed your recipe and the other lady’s vid. I strained most of it as you did. I had lots of liquid on top and I think it was because I peaked during the cool down period. Came out delicious.
New supporter here from Two Family's live stream
Thank you for sharing this simple yogurt recipe! I made a batch last weekend and it is delicious! 🌻
I made the Greek yogurt, it was wonderful, it didn't have the vinegar taste that store bought plain Greek yogurt has. I will be making a lot more in the future!
Thanks for sharing!!
Hello bandana grandma! It came out perfectly. Absolutely stoked about how easy this is! Had a case of nonfat boxed milk. Nice to do something healthy with it. Thank you thank you thank you! I've been telling my family it's easier than boiling an egg 😉
Saw you on a live stream! Love your videos ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you FortyBelowLife, and WELCOME!
Easy recipe and explained in a straightened manner :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING FABULOUS
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
OH glad to have found ya. !
Thanks 😉😊
Wow that was easy, thank you! Love and prayers💛
I hope to try it this week. I need easy! 😊
Thanks.
OH!!! I am so excited to try this!!!!
So far all the reports have been good. I'm sure there is a crockpot out there that doesn't run correct temperatures, and that could be a problem, but so far, so good!
Hello new friend here from Canada cheers and much love 😊💚🌱✌✔
Mine was perfect, thank you.
You're welcome! I'm so happy you came back to let me know! It also won't encourage others who may want to try the recipe. I so appreciate you coming by and hope you subscribe to a RUclips channel too.

Showing you some ❤ from Two Family Homestead!!
Hi! I saw this video a year or so ago and love making yogurt now! Thank you again! I do want to tell you that when I clicked on your video today, I noticed I was unsubscribed... I was subscribed last year. I oversubscribed but thought you might want to know that somehow I got unsubscribed from your great channel. 😁
Thank ou Tina. It is unfortunate that for some reason many subscribers get UNsubscribed for no apparent reason. Thank you for re-subscribing! I truly appreciate your comments, and thank you for watching!
Oh wow! That is easy!
I promise, IT REALLY IS!
Finally came here from Melissa and Alex's recommendation. I'm not visiting the grocery store much these days but I'll get a gallon of milk next trip so I can try this.
Welcome Toni, so nice to have you here!
It might be a good idea to use a dark bowl when showing your beautiful yoghurt because we can’t see anything when you put it into that white bowl
cool video...Cheers from Japan :)
I'm definitely trying this soon. I wish you'd make one of my recipes lol!

I'm going to try this for sure!!
Please do! I've been enjoying it every single day and saving so much money over store bought. Each night I put a little from the batch in the fridge over a strainer and have thick Greek yogurt for the next day. Share the video with your friends -- they will love to know how to do this too!
This is fantastic.. good job granny :)
