OMG IM 14 AND BC OF YOU I WAS ABLE TO FIX MY MOMS MOWER YOU ARE AMAZING THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!! I couldn't find anything else on this I didn't even know what a socket was I hope you have like an amazing rest of your life !!!
Thank you so much! I have a LA 100. Your video and screen shot of the parts were such a big help .You saved me a head ache and about $100 through Dere and parts stores. The size sockets and torque bits was the icing on the cake! Its was cool to watch your video with my 11 year old sun and work in the shade on the tractor. It showed him if used correctly the internet is a fountain of knowledge. 👍
Thanks William! I'm glad it helped out. I apologize for the low production value and bad language. I agree about the internet! If you have something broke chances are other people do also. Thanks man.
thanks for your help! i purchased my tractor new in 2005, just had to replace the starter today...i spent more time trying to get the starter mounting bolts un-done than the time to trouble shoot my problem, push the tractor from the yard to the garage, up hill in 94 degree heat and buy the part on line!
@@astrodiver1 It was a fail, the starter isn’t the issue and the new battery didn’t change a thing even tho it was bad. The solenoid still just clicks. I’ll be bypassing the seat and clutch safety switches next……any other ideas? The ground was tight but it was greasy dirty. Any other suggestions??
@@AlphaAl1 Sorry to hear that, at least you have a spare starter lol! It is probably the starter solenoid from my experience, I've had to replace mine twice.
I can't get my Cowling cover back on correctly. It runs fine without it. I broke all the fan blades the first try. Now, new fan and still hitting. Any idea??
Something strange just started happening with my mower it will start and run fine but if I shut it off and try to restart it when it’s hot it just spins and spins. I read on a forum some where it could be the starter going bad and the heat expanding the components inside and binding it up. Thoughts ?
It sounds like the Bendix on the starter (the gear and spring at the top) If you have any thin penetrating oil you can try spraying it with that when it's cold. The Bendix has to rise up the starter pinon and if it works cold but not warm it's probably just gummed up. Brake or carburetor cleaner may also work.
VERY detailed video, but How did you know it was the starter? cause my la105 is doing something weird, when i turn the key to try to start it, the solenoid just clicks, clicks, clicks, clicks, clicks, i seen other videos of a bad solenoid where, you only hear one Click, Could it be a starter? cause i order a solenoid hoping that will fix it. what do you think?
I just wrote a long response but managed to delete it :( In a nutshell carefully touch the 2 large positive terminals together on the solenoid together using a screw driver or a thick wire. If the starter engages you need a new solenoid. If it doesn't it's the starter. Since you hear a click in the solenoid your wiring from the key to the solenoid is probably good. Also ck your wiring between the solenoid and the starter for loose wires or corrosion. Also try jumping your battery to make sure that it's not weak. A lot of times the battery is simply the problem.
@@astrodiver1 i touch the two post on the solenoid with a screw driver nothing is happening, i mow my yard, and the next day, i go out to start it and it just clicks alot, i put my hand on the starter is a turn to key and i dont feel anything, but the solenoid makes alot of click noise, just to be clear, has i turn the key it is not just make one click its its alot of clicks., i got some wire bushes, to clean off the battery post.
i broke off one of the bolts on my nev battery, i was going lefty loosey but i think i had to right for to loose the bolt. now when i take of the cover off to get to the starter, does the 10mm botls twist off lifty loose?
if my battery is charged and when I try to turn it over, my starter is sizzling with smoke coming out do you think I need a new starter... I'm guessing that's probably the problem
I noticed that your mower has about the same low hours (168ish), that mine has. Why in the name of all that's holy, would a starter go bad at such low hours?? Thanks, Briggs & Stratton!! I'm so disappointed with my John Deere L118 lawn tractor! Every time I have to use it, something else is needing to be fixed! Anybody want to buy a low time JD lawn tractor??
@@astrodiver1 Thanks for the update. I watched a few more YT videos about my mower & problems. I found a nice video that suggested to check the lifter gaps on my OHV. It's supposed to be. 004", & mine were .017+". Once I adjusted them, my problem was solved. I'm guessing that my mower engine was having perhaps 12:1 compression instead of whatever "normal" is supposed to be. No more trying to burn up the starter!

Thank you so much brother. I know what I’m getting into now.
Thank you! Worked on my LA115.
Sweet! Good news John.
What is the torque that John Deer recommends for starter bolts?

@@kitt28 If you touch the 2 post on the solenoid and just get sparks, it is either a very low battery or the starter

that 168ish hours are now 220-ish but the mower was 13-ish years old at the time and already been through 3 battery's and a starter solenoid.
