This does seem like a really good option if you're including electo-mechanical cameras - and there's no reason not to. My only issue with recommending this _above_ others would be the lens mount. How easy is it to find Yashica and Zeiss (Contax) lenses? Because of that, I'd probably rather suggest the Minolta XD-7 which, although I've never used it, is much beloved, has similar features (if not more) and Minolta mount lenses are super common and possibly the best deals in vintage lenses right now.

@@AnalogPhotographyEU Ok good. I'm not that familiar with Yashica's 35mm systems and I guess I just don't notice lenses in this mount much.

I have the XD-11, which is the North American version of the XD-7 (Europe) and XD (Japan). I took some photos with it just today. It's an awesome, metal, mechanical camera that has metering but can still be operated if the battery is dead. Highly recommended.

I had a fx-d and I don't see any particular reason to recommend it.
Yashica has a great variant of the Cosina CT-1 it's called fx-3 super. A more reliable fully mechanical option.
If you want to recommend an electromechanical camera, then it is better to go with the Minolta X-300 or their Chinese copies. These are probably the most reliable cameras with an electronically controlled shutter.

actually thic camera is more reliable tham most meccanical cameras!
has an quartz shutter made with zeiss contax, the same of the most expensive cameras :)
and meccanical cameras are not good to start becaus no auto mode . it makes harder to use it

@@AnalogPhotographyEU I would say that auto exposure in these cameras requires at least as much awareness as simply using a manual mode with meter. I never really looked at auto as something for beginners, but more for situations where conditions are changing quickly. Even with the multi-segment metering of newer cameras, you need to understand how the meter works and where it goes wrong. Working with automatic exposure is never a matter of trust, it's always a debate.

I don't agree, I am sure it is a very fine camera. However, whilst I no doubt the shutter is accurate probably more accurate than the ISO of the film. It really is not that critical. Almost any 35mm SLR is perfect for the new film photographer as long as it is not programme only. Yashica cameras were always good, Zeiss would not have trusted their Contax brand to them if they did not produce good cameras. I am not sure having a metal top and bottom plate is important, think about Nikon F90X which is a really solid camera, or if you must, the Canon AE1. I think the choice of camera should be more dictated by the photography you want to do. If your interest was in serous macro photography, then a Praktica VLC would be a better choice, but if you were interested in sport then anything with an auto winder and an auto metering mode would be preferable to the Praktica. By the way, brass was only chosen for camera top and bottom plates because it is easy to machine, it is soft. Plastics, can have much greater resistance to impact damage, although the brass does feel nicer. Nice camera and I have no doubt suitable for many beginners but not necessarily the best. That depends on their individual needs.

Far from cheap. I just looked up the prices.
