Hey, i was wondering if the iCUE link system is necessary? I have a commander core for some current corsair fans.

It is necessary because these fans can't connect to a commander unit since they don't have their own individual fan/rgb headers to plug into it. These fans also require their own pcie slot on the power supply to use the hub so there is that issue to consider also

Personally I would only choose one or the other and for me it’s iCUE Link as they aren’t exactly mixable. iCUE link hardware won’t work with commander core but you can run both at the same time
