- The Lancia Fulvia 1600 Zagato now has perfectly shaped new bodywork thanks to the amazing metalworking skills by Adrian and Sam at www.prestigerefinishing.co.uk/ who have created beautiful new body panels out of flat sheet using mainly hammers and an English Wheel.

I love the way Adrian says "I'll just make it to the same standard as the other door.." and all of us are picking our jaws off the floor at the stunning skill of the guy.
We applaud you too, Harry, for getting the Zagato done to such a level, as the cost of all the hours of skill must be a bit of an "Ouch!" moment, but it will be stunning.
100%. Although the savings of going down the cheaper bodge and rattle can job would lead to a much bigger "ouch" in the end!
I think Harry would say gobsmacked when describing how we feel about Adrian's skills. I also want to thank Harry's pocketbook for not going cheap on this restoration. The car is going to be amazing.

This chap knows how to do metal work, he’s a real artisan and a master of his craft!
Amazing to see the rust, totally rotten, then the bare metal and then with primer. It's bloody amazing what these artisans have achieved.

I always love how a quick coat of primer can make a patchy eyesore look like a perfect car (provided all the right work has been done, of course).
And what happens when these artisans stop working, will there be anybody to replace them?
Speaking as an ex mechanic, I was always,in awe of the guys in the sheet metal/bodyshop. How they could manufacture structure and panels from scratch amazed me. However, Adrian is on another level - truly fantastic craftsmanship. Yes, the bill will be an 'ouch!' moment, even with Harrys deep pockets - but the result will be outstanding and super- valuable.
Artisan is an often overused and undeserved word these days but in the case of Adrian it is wholly applicable and deserved. Remarkable craftsmanship.

As a trained craftsman (aircraft) - I consider the term artisan to be an insult. The last thing I would want is my work to be viewed as artisanal. Artisanal work is all too often hit and miss, self taught, highly variable, unrepeatable and nothing like the skill levels and more importantly quality standards demanded of a time-served (practical rigour) night school educated (Theory grounding) craftsperson. Any of us, so trained, could do this quality of work because these are the standards we were taught over years following our similarly time-served mentors. “I can’t live with that!” Is exactly how we are taught to think as well as work. Things have to be done right or not at all.
These Zagato cars were built originally by old school Italian coach builders who again are proper craft workers.
The hideous repairs, bodges, and horror stories under the skin were clearly done by people making it up as they went along. That is what I think of when I hear the term Artisan.

I would frame the old door skin with the original red paint as “art” to hang on the garage wall behind it...a reminder of where the car was at in 2021 in years to come!

I find it comforting to know that there are still people who can do work at this level. Just brilliant. And I love the humility when they talk about what they've done; "I just made the other door to the same standard. "JUST?!" It might take a while to finish but you'll know it was done as right as it could be. Just gorgeous!
Looking fantastic Harry. Watching all this encouraged us to rescue the Mrs’ rotten but much loved 2001 1.7 Puma. Having chopped out all the rust, welding in new steel, fabbing panrls as needed all down the car and painting from to match. It’s a very satisfying feeling. Great to see the Zagato taking shape too.

For sure. Body work is never cheap (if it is, run away) but this car shows what you get when you try to save a few bucks versus doing it right the first time

When Sam says the lights fit "perfectly" there is something that makes me think thats an accurate description. Most people throw words like that around but I have a feeling he really means it.
That reminded me of another artisan, Allen Millyard - "it fitted just perfect, I was really happy with that".

I’ve just watched all nine instalments (so far). The engine rebuild is superb but the metalwork is just out of this world. Best series of films I can ever remember seeing.

This car will end up the lightest Lancia Fulvia 1600 Zagato in the world. Very little bog, double up panels removed and a perfect fit for all the panels. Sensational work. I'm glad I'm not paying the bill for this resto
This is the video I've been wanting to see! The sheer quality of Adrian & Sam's work is a joy to behold & a rare privilege. The sharpness of the crease/swage lines is truly amazing & really defines the car , yet they are still finding areas of rust in difficult places! However, these are dealt with so professionally & so calmly, to the point it seems more like a minor inconvenience, rather than a major headache if any amateur car mechanic had to face such a problem. Keep up the great work, but I have one request....please don't keep us waiting another 4 months for the next episode! 👍🔥👍
What sorcery is this? These craftsmen are exemplary in their skills. At this moment in time, I am contemplating my next vehicle. I couldn't help but feel that the attachment you will have with this Lancia Fulvia after this wonderful restoration will never match whatever attachment I will have with my new vehicle. Wonderful work and it is always a joy and pleasure to see that there are true craftsmen (of both genders) out there.

Man I like to think I'm pretty handy when it comes to vehicles but I've always left bodywork to the professionals. I can grasp how all the mechanisms and electronics fit together, how they work and how to remove, fix and build them.
But panel work, especially metal shaping, is close to outright sculpture work that takes many, many years of practice (and stuff ups) to develop a feel for. These guys are genuine artists, hats off to them. Not many bring this level of skill even within the industry, having your work shown in detail at every step with nowhere to hide is a bigger advertisement than any finished product - that's some well deserved confidence there
I’m not a particularly huge fan of these cars or of Zagato per se, but the salt-of-the-earth genius, the sheer ability they display here has me routing for the success of this project as if it is my own investment and this project has, as a surprise to me, become my favorite Harry’s Garage project series yet. So I guess I’m saying thanks to all who have devoted their time to putting this online, Harry, the boys in the shop. Just great stuff.
Hmm. May be close to time for another update on this marvelous machine! I sure hope so, 'cause it's amazing to see the craftsmanship evident here.

The skills and attention to detail here are incredible. These need to be taught to the younger generation, but I don't think you could train into someone the passion and sense of achievement. Truly wonderful.
This is like watching a Retropower video. Similar brilliant skill levels, but far more detail as to what was and what will be. So happy to see this car receiving the care it deserves.

Even like that, you can really enjoy the lines. Such an elegant little car!
It's astonishing to see the lines as they should be. In retrospect the old shape sculpted in filler was looking very rounded, almost Austin Allegro-esque at the back!
But these guys have really worked a miracle. When Harry first showed it in bare metal, I thought there was no way they could bring it back into shape. Yet a few months of careful crafting, and, well, the result is speaking for itself.
What an amazing transformation in that body! It reminds me of being taught by an ex Rolls Royce panel/metalworking expert named Harold, back in the 1960's He too was brilliant at details and making sure that everything was perfect! Fascinating!

Fabulous craftsmanship sorting out astonishing corrosion, and bizarre 'repair' work. This Zagato when finished is going to be the best in the world!
I think back to the video of Harry driving the car before it went for this restoration, when we now know it was essentially just a cobweb of metal with seats and an engine...gulp!
WOW! You don’t realise how much work to exacting detail is involved until you see a car stripped down like this one. Great job guys. Looking forward to seeing the finished product, maybe by or before July 2022.

Just stunning craftsmanship and I think those front wings have become my favourite of any car. Blown away by rear boot edging too and love how he talks so matter of factly about gapping the doors and other techniques and they are perfect!!
Apprentice body shop panel beaters should view this as dogma.

That is the most beautiful line on the top of the front wing that I have ever seen on a car, ever.

This car is lucky it found you. Many wouldn’t have the dedication to put the car right again..It’s nearly a full reskin, not to mention the rockers and other structural pieces. These gentlemen really know their craft. I’ve restored some very rusty muscle cars and it’s many hours of fabrication and labor.
Brilliant timing! I've just finished rewatching the previous episodes, then this pops up.
I had the Corgi model of the Zagato when I was a nipper (the early style with side opening bonnet). I came home from school one day to find that my mum had accidentally put some of my collection in the bin. OUCH! I think that was the first Corgi to have an opening bonnet + engine. It may also have been the first with opening doors.
So this has been a trip down memory lane for me. Thank so much for investing the not inconsiderable funds needed for a proper body rebuild. There's now at least one which will be preserved for future generations to admire.

I'm in total awe at the skill levels and perfectionist attitude of these guys. This will undoubtedly be the best bodied Fulvia Zagato on the planet. Lucky Harry has deep pockets. Also interesting to hear how even a straight from factory Zagato had lashings of filler, seems "bespoke" in Italian translates as "bodged".
What a joy to see this form of craftsmanship, let’s hope these skills will be handed down to younger folks.

I love this series of Harry fixing his cars! One thing I'm really noticing as a Canadian is their diverse accents. I've known for many years all about the differences between the many British accents and their many origins since I first watched "My Fair Lady" as a child. LOL. But here when the "panel sop" men are speaking they have a very thick Cockney type (I think) accent compared to Harry's Posh sounding British accent. VERY cool!

Adrian's an absolute genius. Proper old school auto fabricator. He's pretty much rebuilt that body, single handedly. For God's sake Harry, when this beautiful project is finished, take him for a drive in the Zagato and buy him a pint.
The line on the front wings is so sharp and a wonderful curve up to the top. Fabulous.

I've never seen a Zagato in person. I've only ever seen them oin virtual tours, videos like this and the like. I've never seen one with sharp edges as pronounced as this. In fact, the front fenders almost look foreign to me or at least my mind. But it looks so much better and fitting to the car once you see those edges and curves as they were meant to be. Well done on the mastery of skills presented to this project.

You can get this work done to the same standard in many countries, maybe for less money. In each case, only a minority of restorers would have the skills, but it is not a uniquely British skill. The guys who bodged it were also British...

What Adrian, Sam and the team at Prestige Refinishing have achieved/are doing to the Fulvia is just incredible. Call me old-fashioned, but I hope they have an apprentice scheme and are trying to pass their skills down to the next generation.
The mind boggles as to the cost of all this but, if I remember from this car's first appearance on the channel, as a boy Harry used to see this exact car around Merseyside - so I'm sure the Fulvia Zagato is a keeper and the investment being made in this has far more than just monetary value.
Now that all the original swage lines and curves have been reinstated, it’s really showing up just what a beautiful looking car this is

It's a good job they've another example to use to recreate the lines. As a spray painter I can vouch for how hard their tasks are. Looking absolutely fantastic so far, I expect Harry won't recognise it as the same car once they've finished it!
