I've been using a lot of extended samples in my recent work. One uses a huge siren test with glissando guitar overlay, for another I used some factory noise mixed with procedurally generated tones. The results are surprisingly ambient albeit possibly not to everyone's taste, yep I've been having fun :D
It’s great to hear someone very openly and honestly talking through their mix process and their thinking behind it, making you think of your own processes and thoughts during the mix, very refreshing and relaxing, when I first saw how long the video was I was thinking I’d not be able to keep my concentration, but it was easy, Sara is very engaging and entertaining throughout, never loses her flow or target, very good video, well done!
Sweet, thank you Sara! I make music using piano, strings, bass and drums so this was right up my alley. Most videos are not relevant as they woth with crappy plastic drums, 808's, pads and hard auto-tuned vocals. So thank you (and thanks to Warren for invting you on his channel!). I guess I will watch this one a few times to soak up everything! 🙂
Thank you Sara for all the details of this challenging mix. This is NOT easy to obtain such a great result. I really appreciate your work and I'm learning because of you and this great channel.
Sara Carter - what's not to love? The only thing I would question is the genre definition - this isn't "classical" music at all; the term "neo-classical" has been applied to Hindemith and Stravinsky already and refers to use of things like Sonata form. I'm not knocking the music in any way, I just think it's a form of ambient music and would suit a different description. I could listen to Sara explain engineering and production till the cows come home and I'm really glad you've covered this side of things. I've been doing quite a bit of orchestral / ambient cinematic stuff recently, so this is bang on! Thank you so much
Great work, Sara and very interesting to a novice like me to see your workflow and plugin setup. The music is great and reminds me of the soundtrack music you sometimes hear on youtube videos especially the remote controlled flying drone type ones. It really builds in a very satisfying way to my ears.
This was incredible! Thank you for the video! Warren and Team, It would be super cool if you could get people that do filmscores mixing like Alan Meyerson or even Shawn Murhpy on the channel! :)
Watched this whole video and up remaking the beat only part I couldn't get right was the snare but . Got the base kick and the piano and string right just by listening to how they sound I just subscribe to y'all
I've never regretted subscribing to your channel, have learn lots and they all yield a good result. Please what camera do you use to shoot your videos?
Warren im just wondering when Netflix is going to approach about a series. It seems like the amount of interesting topics and genres is limitless. Also THANK YOU. I didn't know modern classical was even a thing and I love it!
Wauw, great music, I wanted to ask, are there any multi tracks with this breakdown? But they already are online :) I need some music to add extra strings/ arpeggio's this is great stuff to process. Thanks Sarah and all of the PLAP.
Hi Stephen! Unfortunately the track is not released yet but it will be on March 18th on Ben’s and my channel as part of the upcoming rework album. You could follow me on Spotify to get notified when it‘s released, I would appreciate it very much: open.spotify.com/artist/7zjjbGrNLTVFsDLbcMyECn?si=HuAwT5zDTIqvPhZ7XNunGA
It doesn't look like it's a Shure SM7B which is a popular "go to" mic for voice recording. Sounds like there's a bit of an ABBA style boost at 7.5K to me 🙂
Funny you should say that! This is the Rode Procaster through the Waves SSL Channel, but on this video it's through RX because of a hum that has started inexplicably! I'm sending it off for repair and my next few videos will be with an Audio Technica 2035.
Your gear is like a using a spaceship compared to my virtual crayon drawing of a stick with two flat tires I edit on. Amazing, thank You Sara, and PLAP. Wish I could have you hear my song, 27 of 28 acoustic tracks, Really Small Town. My first use of violin, and mandolin over 8 tracks that took a summer to edit after a genius took only1.5 hours to record. Subbing
Hi Warren, I have 12 pieces of strings (4+4+2+2, vln 1, vln 2, vla y vc) but for matters of budget there were recorded as isolated individual tracks in close position. Can you show us how you approach a strings mixing and emulation of the space/room in that scenario?? I think first use a emulation of spaces/reverb that allow me to choose the position of the instruments and then treat them like a stereo track and mix it, what do you think?
The first thing that needs to happen in a video like this is a preview of the track. Explaining what’s going on in a track we haven’t heard just seems really odd….

@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing I try ;) What would be the best way to reach you for a small yet very gratifying project this spring?
Would be great to see how you would work on classical songs/lieder with piano and classical voice…and also to see which plugin you would use…
It would be quite different. Minimal compression, natural reverb sounds and gentle EQ
