I learned a ton here, the part about the multiplicative effect of chaining compressors was like "oh, of course!". Light bulb moment! Very enlightening, thank you Sara! 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks a lot Sara, really! Going completely over board with plugins finally paid off! I made a 2022 version and threw in Gullfoss live at the start, then the 33609 C, Fairchild 670 (with the option of going Manley Vari-MU), ATR/Studer, switched out the ML4 with the Eventide Split EQ, then the Oxford Inflator and finally I switched the L2 with bx_limiter True Peak and saved it as a mix bus template. I do not go as hard on the Oxford inflator, but kept most of the other settings to get in the ballpark before tweaking to taste. Sounding great! Again, a big thank you. :-)
Just the thing she said in the intro made the entire video worth watching. Starting a mix by using "broad strokes" and attacking the busses first, and process the individual tracks only if you need to get more surgical, instead of starting the other way around. I've always started my mixes (after prepping the mix with panning, volume, limiting etc.) with the kickdrum, but perhaps this "broad strokes" could save me a lot of headaches!

Nice to see a vaguely familiar interface, it's a slightly different arrangement from Ardour, but I feel at home with it :) 2mins in and I'm already loving the way Sara explains things, so I may well check out her channel after this
Because I'm on Linux, I use the LSP multiband compressor in a very similar way. I actually use 6 bands to get a bit more control and also use the mid-side functionality to centre the bass and push the top end out beyond the speakers. I also use x-42 plugins on the mix bus because they are so clean. What I have to work harder for is the tone colouration. Sara gets my vote here because I'm not left wondering what these plug-ins do, which makes it a shed-ton easier to figure out suitable substitutes
Thank you for sharing this Sara, and congratulations on the spotlight you deserve. Why can't I get my head around mix bus processing? Are you constantly checking the levels of the processes on the mix bus with every mix decision you make? Is it virtually set and forget even before level balancing? I've heard from CLA before that he likes the 'needle just being touched', but don't you find later that's ended up as 4 - 6db of compression you weren't aware of?
Having a template with my group busses and the dynamics processing already active helps, as well as making sure the tracks themselves are in the right ballpark, level wise. You can do as I suggest in this video and start with the threshold all the way open and then set it once you're part way into the mix.
Thank you Sara and thanks Warren! There is one thing in common with you and all your guest's. Excellence personified! I have learned so much from you and your guest's and I'm so grateful! Happy Holidays to you and yours and to all the PLAP family!
I'd go through the same process as on the Studer and listen to how the tape formula, speed and calibration effect the overall sound. I start with the default.
So, I cloned this signal path with stock UA/logic and free plugins. It has helped so much. Thank you. I know I can move whatever I whenever I want etc. just curious why the tape isn’t at the end of the line like it would be if you were using real tape.
Hi Sara, great tips here, thank you! What do you think about substituting the Avid Pro Multi Band Dynamics for the McDSP ML4000? I don't have the ML4000, but functions look to be very similar.
Interesting, I do some similar things. I also use a 33609 with 100ms release, but I've been using the Arturia plugin. I also dial it in slightly differently where I'll dial in the limiter first to get the needle bumping a bit and then the compressor also bumping a bit. I like the sound of a little analog emulated limiting before my digital limiter. I use the UA Studer pretty much the same. I don't really like the Curve Bender tone that much and tend to use the Black Rooster Pultec plugin and I use it before the tape, but that is probably a side effect of back when I had the opportunities to use analog gear. Finally, I was using the Ozone for limiting but have since started using the bx true peak option. Ozone, and the Curve Bender for that matter, do something to the midrange that doesn't suit me.
Interesting, thanks for sharing! It's all about taste isn't it. That's the great thing about music production, otherwise everything would sound the same.
Sara's voice makes me think back to BBC's Rock School of the mid 80s and imagine that Victoria Wood had a guest spot, looking at audio engineering. Serious information, but with a sensible approach and the skills to back it up. It might be grim up North, but we know how to make good music.
I was recommended Sara's channel a few weeks ago.And now it's like '' Come on, Sara ...do another video !! '' level of fandom. It was nice to see the 33609 , which I think is a bit ignored, on You Tube, anyway.
Fantastic video, Warren and Sara - thank you!! It's good to see that I like a lot of similar versions of the same plugins - mainly Waves stuff, admittedly, but things like the AR mastering console for the EQ, tape simulation, the Puigchild 670 and all that... One question though - isn't this the definition of 'top-down' mixing? I was under the impression that was generally frowned upon (even if the end result still sounds good!)
Thanks, Sara - it does make sense… I’m guilty of doing it a bit as well, but have been trying to make a conscious effort to avoid it. But then, if the end result is good, I suppose that’s all that matters!
Great video thank you so much. So just to confirm, when we see you working on that mix bus, is that your ‘master’ bus? Or would you add these chains on all sub buses (i.e. guitar bus, piano bus, etc.)? Thanks!
It's funny, i don't think twice about how i set up my guitar gear, i do what I know sounds good etc, but when it comes to producing/mixing i always feel like there's a proper way to do it. But people just use what they find to sound good.
Interesting, but I must deplore that it is impossible to hear the real difference between before and after as the after is not gain staged to be equivalently loud.
When I first recorded with Dave Jerden in the late 90’s he showed me the technique of using multiple busses on the SSL which he had be doing since the ‘80s. It’s great to see people, like Andrew and Sara adopting it inside of a DAW.
Oh sure, use the 30 setting on the Studer if your not the one who has to pay for the tape. If I had that plug in and caught someone burning up tape like that for these "long haired electric bands" I'd go through the roof! 7.5 will be perfectly fine for the local guitar bums around my town.
What are YOUR favourite Mix Bus plugins? Comment them below!
SSL Bus Compressor
EQP1A into the Townhouse then maybe the Kramer Tape. 🔥
Slate Virt Mix Rack with the Custom EQ and FG-N, into the FG gray, into Softube tape, inflator and Ozone 9 Maximizer until it's ready for mastering
Bettermaker EQ
Fabfilter Pro Q3, Pro C2, Pro MB and Saturn. Ozone Exciter, Imager and Maximizer. Bettermaker EQ232D and Flatline clipper.

What a nice song!
Thanks very much!
PA Neve 354 is my new goto on the mix bus.
Thanks for sharing
Oooh interesting!
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing I have Glue, Townhouse and Neve 354 as laternative when mixing. :) Thanks for your great sharing, Mrs, Carter.
I was recommended Sara's channel a few weeks ago.And now it's like '' Come on, Sara ...do another video !! '' level of fandom. It was nice to see the 33609 , which I think is a bit ignored, on You Tube, anyway.
Thanks!
Excellent tips from Sara as always. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, Sara is amazing
mcdsp plugins are awesome!
Yes! They certainly are
@@Producelikeapro highly under rated
What other plugins have the same quality with the low CPU usage?
Fantastic video, Warren and Sara - thank you!! It's good to see that I like a lot of similar versions of the same plugins - mainly Waves stuff, admittedly, but things like the AR mastering console for the EQ, tape simulation, the Puigchild 670 and all that... One question though - isn't this the definition of 'top-down' mixing? I was under the impression that was generally frowned upon (even if the end result still sounds good!)
Yes, I guess it is. It makes sense to me though. I didn't realise it was frowned upon, I just do what works!
Thanks, Sara - it does make sense… I’m guilty of doing it a bit as well, but have been trying to make a conscious effort to avoid it. But then, if the end result is good, I suppose that’s all that matters!
Accent alone has my attention.
Haha Sara Rocks!
Haha! thanks for watching!
this video is amazing
Fantastic. Clear and to the point. Great demonstration. BBC Maida Vale always gave me the feeling that I was in some sort of nuclear bomb shelter!
YES! It's stuck in a time warp, I love the energy there. Thanks for watching!
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Yeah, and so much beautiful music has come from there.
Great video thank you so much. So just to confirm, when we see you working on that mix bus, is that your ‘master’ bus? Or would you add these chains on all sub buses (i.e. guitar bus, piano bus, etc.)?
Thanks!
No, just the final mix bus
7:12 this is my exact mix philosophy
umm, dither shaping adding sparkle/punch at 24bits?
this was cool!
Thanks ever so much
😊❣️ Thanks!
Thanks Audrey
You're welcome!
I have the exact same UAD2 Neve plugin but mine has a different GUI, how is this even possible ?
Thx.
Update
@@sergiobianchi4625 free update ?
It's funny, i don't think twice about how i set up my guitar gear, i do what I know sounds good etc, but when it comes to producing/mixing i always feel like there's a proper way to do it. But people just use what they find to sound good.
NIce!
Thanks ever so much!
Elloooo 👊
Hello!
Ay-up!
Its incredibly hard to concentrate because I love her accent so much
Haha! Thanks for trying!
Interesting, but I must deplore that it is impossible to hear the real difference between before and after as the after is not gain staged to be equivalently loud.
Sorry to disappoint, but it's always going to be the case when using plugins for adding gain and that's why they are on my mix bus after all.
Inspired by Andrew Scheps
When I first recorded with Dave Jerden in the late 90’s he showed me the technique of using multiple busses on the SSL which he had be doing since the ‘80s. It’s great to see people, like Andrew and Sara adopting it inside of a DAW.
Oh sure, use the 30 setting on the Studer if your not the one who has to pay for the tape. If I had that plug in and caught someone burning up tape like that for these "long haired electric bands" I'd go through the roof! 7.5 will be perfectly fine for the local guitar bums around my town.
😂Thanks for watching!
First!
