  • Sometimes the best items in D&D are homebrew ones you make for your own players. We looked at a homebrew legendary item, a sickle with the power of the phoenix. Lets review it, give some feedback and talk about making bespoke items for your dungeons and dragons games.

How inventive does the homebrew have to be? I put a character from a video game in a stat block, would you review that? Also when do you stream?

    • @Cinderblocksally
      @Cinderblocksally  7 месяцев назад +1

@@Potato15461I usually stream Sunday through Thursday in some combination. I accept any homebrew, can def be inspired by something from a show. My advice beforehand would be to make sure it’s balanced for D&D as much (if not more so) than accuracy to whatever media it’s from.

      *Sickle of the Burning Phoenix*
      *Weapon (sickle), legendary (requires attunement)*
This magical weapon is forged from the blood of a phoenix and the sands of an ancient desert. The glass blade glows with a golden hue, and its hilt is wrapped in aged leather.
You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon. When you hit a creature with it, the attack deals an extra 1d8 fire damage.
If you are a spellcaster, you can use the sickle as a +2 arcane focus.
      *Slash of the Phoenix*
The energy and heat stored in the blade can be unleashed in a fiery burst. As an action, you can make a ranged spell attack with a range of 40 feet. On a hit, the target takes 3d10 fire damage. This property can be used once, and it recharges after the sickle has been bathed in sunlight for 8 hours.
      *Phoenix Rebirth*
The phoenix blood within the weapon can save you from death. If you are reduced to 0 hit points while holding the sickle, you are resurrected as if by the *true resurrection* spell. You reappear 100 feet from the location of your death, with the sickle in hand. This property can be used once, and it recharges after the sickle has been bathed in sunlight for one week.

slash of the phoenix is very funny as after use you have to hope it isnt storming, foggy or cloudy in any way in the next few days, it could also just be a moba ability that has like a 15 feet wide line that goes out to 40 feet.

2:20 Slash of the Phoenix is weaker than a Fire Bolt from a level 17 caster ... should be 5D10 fire damage once per short rest, without any environmental recharge limiter 📛

So if you want to lean into the Rebirth aspect of Phoenix a super neat idea is instead of true reresection, have them revived as if through reincarnate. so theres a chance they're reborn into a new body. of course you'd wanna add an amount of healing onto it if you go this way.
(you'd also wanna find or make an updated reincarnation table if you go this way but its 100% worth it imo)
also if you were to copy the "searing vengeance" ability I would 100% change the bit about it being "On your turn" & also let it trigger when you fail a death saving throw. so if a foe focus fires you on their turn they cant kill you before the ability procs

Took the words out of my mouth.
I also think making that "fire cantrip" an attack roll you can make once a turn, making this beautiful for any multiattack fighter.

@@Databank255 A way to do the cantrip daily & make it feel special & still phoenix-y is to base it off the more rainbow bird phoenix creature of japanese myth (at least i think its there)... most would probs know it as Ho-Oh from pokemon (as its based off it)...
& let the attack arc as a flamming rainbow chaining to multiple enemies in some way

@@heartofdawnlightYeah, like he said if you want this to be as strong as fireball, it can be as strong as fireball. But I'd rather not. I kinda like how it is (and it's clearly that weak because it's been given to a low level party), but I think 3d10 fire as an attack roll is pretty neat. Like, it's fine, just don't make it once per day and don't make it take a whole action.

Since it's a scythe I think it should cast cone ability like Fingers of Fire once per day at 5th level.
For the second ability, I think it should instead allow you to cast Revivify on someone else, even if they have been disintegrated (Rise from the ashes taken literally); once per week recharge and a person cannot be resurrected in this manner a second time unless they receive the blessing of .

I think it would be interesting if blade would absorb your soul and body when you die (assuming you didnt die as your body gets completely disintegrated) and then upon casting revivify on the blade you would return to life no matter how much time has passed. Might even be a cool Segway to a futuristic fantasy setting where your players are revived centuries later

commenting before watching. So phoenix powers, the ability to lay eggs? And then if you die, if your corpse is thrown into the fire, you get reborn as a baby bird?
