by far the best interpretation of the spirit of the Saint Laurent style , too bad was ousted by Ford who did so poorly and damaged the YSL image .... Albert Elbaz is great and was the best for the master that was Yves Saint Laurent...
Tom Ford did amazing at YSL; it's too bad many people, including Yves Saint Laurent, failed to realize that what was edgy in the 60's, 70's and 80's was lame in the 2000s. Elbaz wouldn't have sold half of what Tom Ford did if he had stayed at YSL.
they had to kick him out , they had to redo each Saint Laurent Rive Gauche locations around the world , for the first time YSL had two fragrances NU and M7 that completely tanked.... they had tow redesign all make up cases and many accessories , when he take over Gucci , Cucci had no more image almost no DNA there it worked , Not Yves Saint Laurent , especially all YSL perfumes skincare, make up were doing very well , he damaged the brandremove all logo and name brand , it did not work at all, he. cost the company millions and was thanked and kick out ....
J M we can see the starting point of idea that grew to be Lanvin’s Elbaz in his first YSL show here, satin puff sleeve, soft and fluid silhouette. So imagine Elbaz still stay at YSL at that time and everything he develops that he did for Lanvin from nothing to become one of the biggest player in luxury market. I would say if Elbaz still stay at YSL back then. He will make YSL way bigger that Tom Ford era, and might be even bigger than Gucci too.
In my opinion, Tom Ford was amazing at Gucci, but he took the same cuts, details and styles from Gucci to YSL, even some materials were the same! It was more like Gucci for YSL, only few signatures like the safari shits, smokings and few puffy sleeves from the YSL's rive gauche classic style. From the business side it brought fans of Gucci to YSL, but sadly didn't have that much of a true spirit. Albert made much more ready-to-wear chic pieces.

Alber himself has stated that it wasn't his best, his time at YSL... I think it's amazing!
