For other folks playing Xbox Series X: since the recent update which lets you tweak graphic settings, I’ve turned off ray tracing and motion blur while leaving the frame rate set to variable and my FPS has DRASTICALLY improved. Towns will still have dips but it truly is a night and day difference

I've been having fun so far but the longer I play the more I'm starting to think... this could have been way better. Performance and mtx aside, this game has a lot of issues that only show up after you've played a bit that I wish more reviewers brought up.
My main issues are just how the main adventure systems work together. There are so few ox carts and I swear they get attacked leaving you stranded so often that you end up having to do a ton of just walking. That is fine for the first like 20 hours because you have fun exploring and fighting which is what they seem to want you to do... adventure!
But then... you realize nearly all the encounters are with the same few monsters, there is little to no valuable pois outside of some gear you can probably just buy in town, there is zero incentive at all to revisit a certain area outside of a quest, and the whole "camping" is very lackluster. For a game that wants you to feel like you are on a journey and your only camp options are to literally watch a cheesy stock footage meat being cooked and sit on a rock.... Disappointing is the only thing I can think to call that.
Many of the quests I've come across have been very.. meh as well. Most of the time the action leading up to me trying to get to the quest has been more than the actual quest with most being resolved in about 5 minutes after spending 30 mins or more to get there. One such quest being to rid a town of lizard invasions which consisted of like 3 lizards in the town... I killed more lizards on the way to the quest than the actual "invasion" itself.
I can't comment on the later parts of the game because I'm still fairly early since I do like to explore every part of an area before moving on so idk if it improves. I'm still having fun for now but it really does feel like they didn't think through the systems well or just frontloaded all the fun and didn't bother to flesh anything out to the next level.
Tldr: A lot of fun at the start that quickly diminishes due to the world issues, bad to mid performance, and ofc the mtx controversy. If anyone is thinking, I would honestly hold off for a sale or future updates. I don't think it is really worth 70 as it is now though If you can get past the performance and mtx you will prob have fun

I'm playing on the PC and I've had minimal bugs/glitches and not really noticed any fps drops, not saying there was none I just haven't noticed them happening. With the microtransactions I recently finished the game and I finished with about twice as many rift crystals than are available in the store, about 8 wakestones and 2 portcrystals and that was after a fairly standard playthrough doing most quests but not much exploration, so in my mind the microtransactions are a non-issue. Btw the patch increased the Art of Metamorphosis in the shop to 99.

It's a bit of a let down but it's still good compared to most modern games. The huge cut down of skills and amount of skills you can equip at one time as well as the huge lack of variety of monsters compared to the first combine with a rather pointless story that has nothing to do with hunting down and slaying the dragon holds it back substantially. What made the first one fun was the variety of monsters to kill and skills to try out while you deal with this cult that worships the dragon till it finally shows up to challenge you. That's not even getting into the endings and side quests. Like I said while better than most games nowadays it doesn't live to the expectations I had for the sequel.

The RC for sale are the thing I have the biggest problem with. The game was proud of not having a difficulty selector but they are essentially selling the ability to play on easy for the first half of the game. No one said the items for sale weren't available in the game, I don't know where these responses keep coming from.
The big problem is the performance. They rushed it out on the 21st when the game wasn't ready for launch because the fiscal year ended on the 31st and they wanted those week 1 sales. I don't care if they patched it to a solid 120 everywhere, no one should buy it before the end of the month. They don't deserve the balance sheet bump for incomplete work.

The Age of Metamorphosis count is supposedly increased to 99 in the update, so even the perfectionist players that obsess over character appearance should be set now.
What I didn’t like is in the first game you had the option to change both your character and your main pawn when using this editor option in the same use. In DD2 you don’t. The massive increase to these books will fix that. Glad to see you enjoying the game.

I feel like you immediately pointed out more than 2 controversies and didn't address the lack of multiple saves, or the content value for your money. Also saying microtransactions are just a part of the landscape we live in is not true. Some games justify their microtransactions by saying that, but many many games don't do microtransactions at all. For a game that came out with semi-functionality breaks and a super early patch to let you remake characters, it's clear that the energy used to create microtransactions could have been used to optimize the game instead. Since finite resources is usually the argument game studios use to support instituting microtransactions, maybe they'd have more resources I'd they didn't spend their time developing microtransaction systems and concentrated on making a finished product then came out with microtransactions after as add-ons

    • @baneintherain

I’m so confused with anyone saying PS5 performance is bad. It wasn’t exactly stellar but it wasn’t terrible. The patch made it way better. Turned off RT, MB, and left VFR. Game runs great now. No bugs. No crashes. It isn’t like we are playing with different versions of PS5. It just boggles my mind how there can be varied experiences other than personal preferences or faulty systems.
The MTX are a non-issue. 🙄This isn’t a thing specific to DD2. It’s a common and passively accepted convention by the majority of players. Thankfully, there isn’t anything that is P2W. Not that it matters because it is a single-player game. Don’t buy them. Money talks. We lost the war on them existing long ago. Whine, cry, rant, rage … MTX aren’t going anywhere.
I thought they were pretty quick with the patch to address more egregious concerns outside of PC performance. Not being able to start over was a huge WTF moment for me. It was straight up insulting as a consumer. Problem solved though.
I give the game a very fun 7/10 as far as my experience. I have a few pain points that I can’t get over.
Traditional fast travel not existing is one thing; ox carts getting attacked so frequently is annoying though.
The story was never going to be good. It could have been 10% more … more everything … a few more story quests later to bridge some parts would have been great. It would have been a more cohesive experience.
I like the vocations. Why they locked two of the most appealing at the end of the story was a huge amount of stupid.
Trickster … I think I took a whole point away just for this. I was hyped for this more than anything. Some of the skills have no practical use outside of niche areas. They do no damage. This level of a support class is better saved for co-op type games. It makes no sense. A poison cloud, burning ash, frozen mist, or one other DOT type attack would have made it so much better. It would have been like an illusion tank with damage over time … but yeah we just don’t want people playing it to do damage I guess. Weird philosophy in a game built around active combat and exploration.
    Anyway. Rant over.
    Thanks for the video.

I really hate MTX with a passion. However, how they did the MTX in this game is that they made it like an extended deluxe DLC that you can buy individually. You can't rebuy any items and it's only $49 or so to buy it all. However if you could buy all the RC you wanted for an example that would have been a big no-no.

My issue isn't the performance or mtx, it's that the only advancements I felt over DD1:DA are the improved graphics and the larger map. The map being a double edged sword as enemy variety is lower than the first game (while encounter density is higher) and only 1/100 locations actually have something worth looting. Still loving the game because there's simply nothing else that hits the same, but I can't say I'm not disappointed as someone who dreamt of a sequel with larger budget/dev time since the first game came out.

There’s no need to talk so much about MTX, that’s not the issue. Outside of endgame area, there are hardly any items to be found in the world, most of the items are in the cities. There are 4 main mobs that you run into and that persists into endgame. The combat system makes you feel cool, but you never feel a sense of progression as you master the game after 10 hours due to lack of variety. You will do the same thing for 30-80 hours, fighting constant hoards of mobs because there is a lack of fast travel and quests requiring you to travel vast distances. Oh, there isn’t a story and every NPC has 1-2 lines of dialogue. What makes the game fun is the combat system when multiple mobs/bosses come at you but everything else is below mid. 6/10 game

Mtx's have no business being in a single player narrative game. I thought larian would've helped people understand that with bg3. It doesn't matter that we can ignore them THEY SHOULDN'T BE THERE. Period.

Thats there because it is absolutly Normalized in Japanese Developed RPGs, its even expected from them in Asia. Asian Player want to be able to buy such Stuff, because they are all in into the Grind of these Games. They will play Hours (without any Story Progress) just to Reach the Highest Level Possible before getting anything else in the Game Done. Check out any kind of JRPG, Trails Series, Atelier Series, Tales Of Series, Monster Hunter and so on and on.... The Only JRPG i am Aware of which didnt do that kind of Stuff (before the Remades/HD Versions on Steam) was the FF Series. The Main Playerbase/Market they Produce their Games for demands it.
OFC we could debate if these Mtx´s should be on the European Versions, but since they arnt needed anyway and dont bring you any kind of Relevant Change in Charakter Power or such, i think they thought: "Better we allow it here to, instead of getting complaints that only 2/3 of our Players got the Choice". And tbh Mtx done as in Dragon Dogma are absolutly Fine, simply because they Change nothing. They dont bring you any significant Advantage, they arnt P2W, they arnt Forced on to you, the Game didnt get harder or unbearably Grindy with the Items it sells as Mtx (you basicly can get everything you can buy in the First 2-5H depending on how fast youself play) and so on and on. People Only Complain about it for the Sake of Complaining, but we dont Complain about the Crap a lot of MMORPGs does because the Game itself is "Free"? Like why? There are a Shitton of Games out there, in which you get forced to Grind 30+ Hours for a single "Base Item" or we can Buy the Option to "Skip the Grind", because the Grind was never meant to be played its only there to Justify the Item in the Shop..... Thats what we should complain about and not a Game which basicly says "Here you can buy it, but if you dont it doesnt change anything" xD

      3. When it comes to MMOs or similar games I don't like mtx's even then but I can deal with cosmetics because they don't change anything significant but it still makes zero sense to me to have them in a single player game. What really upsets and disappoints me about DD2 is they repeated their mistake despite the negative reviews of DD1. Now DD2 has the same issues as its older brother with triple the eyes on it. Story is abrupt and doesn’t make sense in many points.
What happened to the queen? The dragon just appeared and destroyed phaesus’s plans? The main story questions is so short?
Why is night time not more deadly?
Why is there ONE elven village in the ENTIRE game?
Why is the map this small?
Why is the enemy diversity so small? Once I learned to kill drakes in like 20 hours in the rest of the game was trivial (don’t get me started on how disappointed I was with the dragon).
Once you ng+ the game doesn’t scale with your level, why lol?
Wayfarer weapon swaps instead of classes, why?

Also it's Capcom, all of their games have this shit and this is likely the least offending of them.
