- The Viking sword vs the Dane axe: The Vikings were famous for their fighting skills and might have been the most feared warriors of their time.
I wanted to test the damage these weapons will do to a human skull. As a historical novelist I get to do fun stuff like this.

Cool chain mail Bjorn. And the Danish axe is without a doubt a powerful weapon 🪓⚔️

You made a mistake, with all due respect my friend.
As a norwegian i really appreciate everything you're doing. You're calm, tough and you have healthy common sence. Qualities that are gradually beeing washed away in our "modern" society..
Like it or not Bjørn, but you're a rolemodel!
well said.
Jeg er helt enig med deg! Det er viktig å være rolig og sterk. Også vi må elske og respektere kulturen vår. I don't understand people who say Scandinavia has no culture. Reconnecting with my Norwegian roots has been the most powerful thing I've ever done. I'm very much looking forward to visiting the homeland soon. 🇧🇻💪
@@hotrodjones74 total agree! I was in Norway 2 weeks ago ! I came bck revitalized for all What I saw there!! Was a truly conection ! Lookin forward to cm bck asap!!
As a Dane, I really, really agree with you!
This guy is definitely a rolemodel.
Skål!
Imagine being on the battlefield back in the day facing men with these weapons. Gives me chills!
When considering back then the many kinds of disease, deaths of half your children due to sickness, constant hunger, and when you can eat it’s the same bland, old and even rotten food that makes you sick, rarely any meat, the drinking water is always teaming with germs that make you sick, living in constantly wet, muddy, cold conditions, with little hygiene, brutal rulers and thieves, no police, no health care. I am convinced that life back then was already terrible enough for the average person that death was almost welcome, and certainly killing others on the battlefield would be quite satisfying.
Imagine seeing this happen to someone right next to you on the battlefield
Pfffff my penis is bigger! Ha.
That axe is overkill 😅. I didn’t think the sword would do much but it did split the skull! Awesome video Bjorn!!
Need a replica British helmet from that time period to see how the Dane axe reacts to it. That'd be pretty cool. 👍
Or a Monks hood 😅
Why stop there, what about eastern helmets used by the enemies of the the once great Byzantine empire?
I think the Dane axe would react with amusement.
And unless you had a mace, you generally wouldn't purposefully strike a helmet. The Bruce smashed through Bohun's helm supposedly, but destroyed his axe in the process. A few hundred years later albeit
Do you mean English? Thier helmets would've been basically identical to what the Norse and Danes had at this time. The British in this period are the Welsh and Northumbrians, but also similar by this time. If they wore them at all.
That was absolutely beautiful when you used the axe. The joy was written on your face.
Yes right. Thanks for that
Would be very interested to see the results of your bow and arrows versus the ballistic skull.
Check out SKallagrim. He's another viking here on RUclips.
@@Ranstone Thanks, i'll have a look.
You have to remember the gelatin is, I don't know how else to say it, it is grabby, which means arrows and blades will get caught by the gelatin, these would be much more destructive against real meat than they are against gelatin targets. I bet his hit on the neck of the target would have gone much deeper against a meat target!
I remember the original Dane Axe video. It was awesome to see it tested against a sword! Damn I love this channel.
After being hit by the sword, if you lived you may be wishing it had been the axe that hit you.
? The Dane Axe demolished the head 🤔...
@@wolfmauler The axe kills suddenly. The sword mostly not.
Wow so proud! What kind of head are you hitting? I hope it’s not the wrong head cowards.😂😂😂
@@Andreas-ix9sl Yup, those sword cuts will be a slower death, the axe was a cleaner death, which was the gist of my comment.
With the adrenaline one gets in a serious battle, it's 10 minutes to an hour after the battle that you might foolishly wish for that.
I love seeing the agression on your face when you hit the head with axe
Haha, yeah, looked like he enjoyed it a bit too much 😂
Who wouldn't? 😉
He is tuff and dangerous
Love the axe work
100% I can see how it helps. If writing a story line of a battle between two warriors a solid blow to the side of the head digs deep for a fatal wound, but Hollywood would have it take the head clean off as it were made of wet clay.
Today on Therapy with Bjorn...
I miss your Viking videos so much. I do appreciate why you do your world-affairs videos more but I wish you did more Viking videos :)
Thank you for sharing this great video Bjorn x it just shows how life was in those times x
Life.... and the expiration thereof!
I swear you were having way to much fun. I saw that smile....
Okay a little sword and axe action, I'm up for it.
Then I realized this is not just any axe, it's huuge... got me off guard. :)
nice vid.
Nice sword and ax. Wish I had something like those. I wish I could give you more than one like for this Bjorn. That chainmail is also some nice work.
That chainmail 😈
Wonder how much it costs. A lot of hours has been put into creating it.
check out wulflund, there you get some nice handforged viking swords!
@@peterrevens8454 also I wonder how much it weighs!
@@emeraldsea8754 I want to know that also. I hope Bjorn does an episode on chainmail.
@@peterrevens8454 I have no clue what a set made from a blacksmith will cost. A friend showed me how to make it some 30 years back. Other than wire a person chooses, what is neededI to make it, a wood rod, wire cutter, pliers, and two pair of (not too big) vise grips.

My thoughts exactly Erik
Literally a Splitting Headache... Cheers from down under Brother. Stay Strong 🍻 Skål
Let me say Finally a different video today about our roots, what we love the most. Skal Bjorn
Great video Bjorn, both the sword and Viking axe are great weapons of steel. Though in some cases, I think the axe is more practical.
The Dane axe has a much longer range of swing too, and more momentum to build force
yes but if you miss with your swing the sword will get you
And it costs a fraction of the price, and time to make. A true type XX sword runs starting at 1000USD$. The axe is sub 300USD$ for properly made historical reproductions.
You could arm 3 men with dane axes for the price of one man with a sword, and this translates to historic times as well.
@@Ranstone It's very utilitarian as well. Can't cut a tree down with a sword very well without blunting the edge, but those axes were all purpose tools. Handle breaks? Go find an approximate branch, use the ax head to shape the handle, and away you go with just a few hours of work. Super useful.
Interesting, didn't think about this.
The ballistic head experienced a few very real flashbacks to 793
awesome stuff, very cool
👀
The way the first hit bounced upwards with that noise just made me laugh so much! 😂😂. Love the idea behind this video though. I’d also love to see other types of weapons in future videos. Love the channel!
That is why the Vikings were so feared . Great warriors & explorers . We owe a lot to them. Thanks for demonstrating past weapon skills.
So you are able to write these off as a work expenses?
Damn...
I think the sword has its merits, fast agile and being made of some of the hardest fabricated metal of it's time. But the axe that's another beast entirely, feared by a multitude of cultures. Also on a side note I once saw the remains of a Norse sheathe for a sword and that hung had some of the finest inscriptions I have seen it was beautiful and awe inspiring knowing that way back then there were some talented craftsmen.
Swords like that would always be used with shields, while Dane Axes require two hands. Without a shield, the sword is clearly inferior to any spear or dane axe.
The sword is a sidearm. The axe is a primary weapon of war.
The sword you can wear while wielding other weapons, like a shield and spear or a Dane Axe. So, if you get close and are wearing armor, and end up grappling or get disarmed, your sword or dagger would be pulled out. Very common result of sparring in armor, ending in grappling and a dagger to the throat or face.
"...and this is a ballistic head" - LOL! I love it!
"Anyone says I'm getting depressing again"
This is what you get! 😂
Wouldn’t want to get hit by either one! I’ve done some heavy armor combat, and even through steel armor and padding a heavy weapon like the axe or mace can ruin your day, and we weren’t really trying to kill each other. Most of the time. 😂
Your way at work was WAY cooler than my day at work!
Enjoy 🎉🎉🎉 it's nice to see someone that loves their work!
That explains the berserker story on that bridge. Stamford Bridge was it.

Amazing , never really thought about it, lots of damage, thanks for sharing.
I've seen your other video with the Dane ax against the ballistic head - it makes the sword look merciful
Bro this is the reason I subbed
(note: getting your axe stuck in your foe can lead to foe's buddy approaching you with a certain gleam in his eye.)
Great short vid! 👊🏻 Please, further future videos on this topic or otherwise on the history of the Vikings will certainly be welcome. Thank you! 🙏🏻
And who says that ancient weapons aren't deadly? What makes the Dane Axe so deadly is the long handle shaft. It multiplies the speed of the axe head, over the speed of the arm using it, if I remember my ballistics training. The draw back is that the long shaft is difficult to control, etc. requiring a lot of training.
Very interesting short video. ;-)
