When considering back then the many kinds of disease, deaths of half your children due to sickness, constant hunger, and when you can eat it’s the same bland, old and even rotten food that makes you sick, rarely any meat, the drinking water is always teaming with germs that make you sick, living in constantly wet, muddy, cold conditions, with little hygiene, brutal rulers and thieves, no police, no health care. I am convinced that life back then was already terrible enough for the average person that death was almost welcome, and certainly killing others on the battlefield would be quite satisfying.

And it costs a fraction of the price, and time to make. A true type XX sword runs starting at 1000USD$. The axe is sub 300USD$ for properly made historical reproductions.
You could arm 3 men with dane axes for the price of one man with a sword, and this translates to historic times as well.

@@Ranstone It's very utilitarian as well. Can't cut a tree down with a sword very well without blunting the edge, but those axes were all purpose tools. Handle breaks? Also on a side note I once saw the remains of a Norse sheathe for a sword and that hung had some of the finest inscriptions I have seen it was beautiful and awe inspiring knowing that way back then there were some talented craftsmen.

Swords like that would always be used with shields, while Dane Axes require two hands. Without a shield, the sword is clearly inferior to any spear or dane axe.

    • @hellomate639

The sword is a sidearm. The axe is a primary weapon of war.
The sword you can wear while wielding other weapons, like a shield and spear or a Dane Axe. So, if you get close and are wearing armor, and end up grappling or get disarmed, your sword or dagger would be pulled out. Very common result of sparring in armor, ending in grappling and a dagger to the throat or face.

And who says that ancient weapons aren't deadly? What makes the Dane Axe so deadly is the long handle shaft. It multiplies the speed of the axe head, over the speed of the arm using it, if I remember my ballistics training. The draw back is that the long shaft is difficult to control, etc. requiring a lot of training.
    Very interesting short video. ;-)

That was incredible the amount of damage those 2 authentic weapons inflicted on the ballistics skull 💀 Your videos never cease to amaze me Mr. Hansen. I'm actually going out to my Norwegian buddy's house today in the wilderness to shoot our guns and ironically he has the exact same last name as yourself. Thank you for all the hard work and time you put into your informative videos.
